This week on the podcast I had Marieke Rodenstein. Marieke is a Holistic Dietitian, Nutritionist and Functional Medicine Practitioner with over 15 years of experience in her field. She has worked as a holistic dietitian in the Netherlands, India and Sydney and has run her private practice in Melbourne for the past 9 years. Marieke holds a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of The Hague in The Netherlands and has completed the ADAPT Functional Medicine training through the Kresser Institute in the USA. She is also a certified GAPS practitioner and Mindd practitioner, has contributed to books by Sarah Wilson and Michelle Bridges and was a long standing expert for Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar program. We spoke about her health battles which have ultimately been the basis of what she does now as a career. Marieke offers an informative stance on how to look after our gut health, “stripping the layers of the onion” to get to the root cause. I really think you will enjoy this episode, as much as I enjoyed chatting with Marieke, she is informative but digestible to those who don't have a degree in the area, and you will be left motivated and wanting to apply for suggestions right away. This week on the podcast, I had Casey Beros. She is an author, presenter, facilitator and journalist. She helps people tackle the obstacle course of life with candour, humour and a few swear words thrown in for good measure. You'll find her on your TV screens, in your ears as a podcast and audiobook host and across Australia's leading digital platforms. She has two little girls, arguably the world's best husband and a raging addiction to snacks - plus a burning desire to help us all make peace with our past and (best) friends with our future. We discussed her journey to get to where she is now and how it can be sometimes difficult to sift through the BS influencers put out regarding health and determine what is real. PLUS she gave us some insight into her stealth help book which has sold out in many places already. Known as a bestie in a book: The Bad Girls Guide To Better. I purchased my signed book from her website here: https://www.caseyberos.com! I won't spoil too much for you, I implore you to take a listen for yourself. This week I had my good friend Cassandra Gozel on the podcast. Perfect timing as she has just launched her business The Healing Avenue. Cassandra and I met back when I was working part time at Chemist Warehouse, and we have been friends ever since. She is such a beautiful soul, who cares so deeply and that is evident both in her personal and professional life. Mutually interested in the holistic health space, bouncing ideas and thoughtful discussions and learning off each other. She is so inspiring and to be honest, her passion makes me want to go back and study naturopathy too. Cassandra is a fully accredited Naturopath with a Bachelor of Health Science. However, throughout her studies, she felt called on an emotional and spiritual level too, which led her to become a Reiki Master as well as a Theta Healer. Devoted to the people she heals on a holistic level, treating the mind, body and spirit, she decided to create her own space to do just that, to uncover the root cause of issues clients came in with and allow them to heal. You will learn more about it throughout our conversation, however if you feel called to discover, she is offering a free 10 minute call, which you can simply book via her website. On the podcast this week, I had Evan Karavitis, who is the Founder and Director of The Wild Olive, he believes that food is the best way to connect with people. It is through his love for food, health and his connection between his roots in Australia and Motherland, Greece, that The Wild Olive was born. Evan is committed to his cause - ingesting The Wild Olive each day over the last 12 months, for its many known health benefits. His cherished wife, Pinar, enjoys cooking with The Early Harvest for his family. Family holds a large value in Evan's heart. When he is taking a break from his active endeavors, Evan enjoys spending time with his family, all while maintaining a healthy work-life balance and maintaining optimum health with The Wild Olive. The benefits of olive oil have been heralded for centuries. New to the market, Australian-owned “The Wild Olive” is proudly producing some of the most delicious and nutrient dense Olive Oil in the world, harvested from trees traditionally found in Southern Greece. While olive oil is not new to most people, The Wild Olive promises something completely different from the more familiar (and boutique) brands commonly available. Its premium olives are grown on trees that can range in age up to 1000's of years nestled in the wild mountainous region of Laconia in Southern Greece, where premium Olive Oil has been produced for as long as people have existed. It is a landscape completely free of chemical fertilisers and pesticides that supports specific species of olive trees unique to the area. Soil, climate and proximity to the sea are factors that contribute to oils renowned for taste, quality and health benefits. This week I had Lauren Brant Hall on the podcast. The effervescent Lauren Brant is consciously curating a holistic lifestyle. A well-known Australian personality, multi- talented Lauren has held a host of coveted television and media roles during the span of her impressive career. A wearer of many hats, Lauren is a skilled performer, speaker, influencer and entrepreneur. Undertaking her most important role yet, Lauren is purposefully raising sons: Miller, Houston (and is pregnant with a third son) with husband Barry Hall (ex AFL football player). From her flagship role as a cast member on Hi-5; to her reality TV debut on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here; Lauren's vibrant personality shines through in everything she creates. While she might live a high-profile life, bubbly Lauren has her feet firmly planted. Down-to-earth and chasing wisdom, her powerfully positive ethos is infectious. This week I was excited to have Simon Hill on the show. Simon is the founder of the hugely popular Plant Proof podcast and blog of the same name, and a nutritionist and qualified physiotherapist. On top of his formal education, Simon spends hours and hours deciphering scientific studies so he can break down how to fuel your body to promote longevity and reduce the chance of developing disease while simultaneously achieving whatever health and fitness goals you may have. We spoke about episode 99 of his podcast with David Sinclair, including what the meaning of stressed plants is and how plant based supplements like Reseveratrol have powerful benefits. Simon recently released his first book The Proof Is In the Plants, whereby 100% of the proceeds are donated to protect Rainforests. This powerhouse of a book I have purchased and am eager to dig into, however I was fortunate enough to deep dive into what I am in for during the episode. We also discussed how this all came to fruition. He is the plant-based food contributor to Chris Hemsworth's fitness app, Centr, and in 2019 Simon opened a plant-based restaurant, Eden, in his Sydney neighbourhood of Bondi. This was one of the longest episodes I have recorded and I did not want it to end! Simon was brilliant in all rights and I will definitely be taking him up on his offer to have him back on the podcast down the track. Now enough from me, take a listen to the podcast yourself. This week I had the beautiful Sally Jane Douglas on the podcast. She is a Women's Empowerment Mentor and Women's Embodiment Coach with 15 years experience working with and supporting women. I was lucky to cross paths with her through the Body By Finch program. She is so generous with her time, imparting wisdom to women to allow them to be the best selves. Sally took us on a journey explaining how she began on this journey fresh out of high school and where her dreams took her as well as her learnings. To how a previous relationship cemented who she wanted to support in the health space. Trigger warning for those listening as she briefly explains that said relationship was toxic and she experienced domestic violence. So please be safe and check in with your loved ones or organisations like Life Line or Respect Australia if you need extra help. She is a busy bee, offering her services through her signature online group programs (EmpowerHER and SHE Collective), Sally compassionately guides women to reconnect with their intuition, step into their power, and unleash a pleasure-filled life of their dreams! She explains the two which are currently available. Sally's greatest joy is facilitating women to overcome their fears and doubts and witness them develop self-trust and self-belief to lead their lives with confidence and clarity. Living her own life heart led, Sally fiercely embodies all she teaches as she supports women to feel deeply, live fearlessly and love wholeheartedly in their own lives too. We also spoke about what she does to fill her cup including the choice to move up to the Sunny Coast and most recently renting a van to explore. I'll stop there, take a listen for yourself! Julie set out to change that creating a retailer focused on driving change through Flora & Fauna and also in the industry as a whole. Julie Mathers is the CEO and Founder of Flora & Fauna. This week I was lucky to have Doctor Dana Cohen on the podcast. She is a clinician, a doctor, specialising in internal medicine, who has worked side by side with the late Dr. Robert Atkins, a true pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. She has helped thousands of patients find relief from a variety of health problems utilizing the principles of integrative and functional medicine. She practices with an emphasis on the individual, understanding that no two patients are alike. Her results demonstrate that there is an art to medicine and a way to connect with patients on a level much deeper than what is achieved through mainstream medicine. She focuses on nutrition and limits her patients' reliance on prescription medications by using diet, lifestyle changes and nutritional supplementation. This leads me to cases which she discussed that were rapidly improved by a simple staple we all have access to - water. She recently launched her first book “Quench” with coauthor Gina Bria, which has garnered rave reviews and has a cult following of devotees. Dr Cohen was such a lovely guest to have on, I think everyone will be reminded of the necessity in the simplicity - staying hydrated. She also gave amazing tips on staying hydrated in diverse ways - like making one of her smoothies! This week I was delighted to have Founder and Co-CEO of Superfeast; Mason Taylor on the podcast. Why I was so excited to have Mason on was because I have been taking medicinal mushrooms for the past three years, and he was one of the people who has such a plethora of experience in this area. Mason is a wellness educator, avid sharer & inspirer. Host of the SuperFeast Podcast (as well as The Mason Taylor Show podcast), professional speaker & retreat facilitator, Mason is a passionate tonic herbalist & founder of Australia's leading adaptogenic medicinal mushroom provider, SuperFeast. Mason is dedicated to teaching people of all walks of life how to embrace & benefit from the healing forces of nature as they create a unique & dynamic health philosophy. Mason's energy & intent for a long & happy life is infectious. Mason also brings a refreshing & cheeky sense of humour to his talks, podcast & life, because longevity relies on a good belly laugh. As this podcast is all about learning, discovery and holistic health, and we dig deep into this throughout the pod. I think everyone will enjoy this episode and take something from it. We speak about being our authentic selves and going with the ebbs and flows of life. Mason and I discussed what ‘medicinal mushrooms' really are, how tree mushrooms are in fact tonic herbs and adaptogens which have such amazing benefits and I speak about my own personal experiences using them. Not to mention where they are harvested from and how they can help us be at our prime in all sense of the word. They are just so powerful. We also spoke about the important of optimal mental health and how so many around the world have been severely affected by this over the last year. Following on the importance to see practitioners in the field, albeit the limitations to seeking them on a financial level but also the fact that simple things like getting out in nature are not as readily promoted for our health. I won't continue banging on about how crazy amazing this chat with Mason was, I implore you to take a listen yourself. To find out the whole story, tune into this week's episode. I continue to be blown away by the calibre of amazing guests joining me on this podcast. This week I was honoured to have Steph Prem join me. This Winter Olympian, Pilates Master, motivational speaker, entrepreneur is one of Australia's leading experts on health and wellness. We explored how Steph “accepted the rewrite”. Deep diving into the gritty reality of how she's overcome both extreme lows and highs and come out the other end stronger and more resilient (both mentally and physically). As the founder of the unique Studio PP Pilates training method she's been responsible for thousands of transformations. While her high profile corporate and celebrity clientele reflect Steph's unique, inspiring and performance driven ethos. She's a total powerhouse, can you believe she's lead six thousand classes over the last decade as a Pilates Master and wellbeing coach! Her total wellbeing approach works to transform your body and your mind while elevating body confidence and igniting your energy. I know everyone will be inspired by Steph's journey, she is a legend, in every sense of the word. After speaking with her I felt so inspired and driven to continue my own quest of discovery in holistic health. Her willingness to ask for help will resonate with you all. She reveals why including a therapist in her recovery was a game changer and believes we should be shifting our mindset about the role of therapists and instead view them as coaches. As a counsellor myself, constantly trying to erase the stigma related to people asking for help, this reinforced why Steph's experience was so important to share on so many levels. Once you hear this episode you'll totally understand why Steph is such an in demand motivational speaker and health and wellness expert. There is no question you will LOVE listening to Steph - and she will leave you wanting more! After our chat, I was lucky enough to attend one of her Workshops at Willow Urban Retreat. I'm not exaggerating when I say, it was a timely reminder that I needed to regroup, re-evaluate and re-energise. Her approach is both nurturing and invigorating, I left the workshop feeling sore (in a good way) and amazing all at once. If you have the opportunity to try it yourself, definitely check it out. EPISODE 14 I'm not sure how I got so lucky with this next guest. He has been an actor for all his life. But for me, his most powerful works which resonate with me and which open up a world of Unearthing Wellbeing in all it's integrity in the journey of discovery are his books and talks. This next guest is Philip Shepherd who is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. He is the creator of The Embodied Present Process™ (TEPP), which he developed over 40 years of teaching embodiment practices, and shares worldwide in both in workshops and Facilitators Trainings. TEPP uniquely combines the two resources necessary for embodiment: effective practices, and a deep understanding of our culture's blind spots, which tend to keep us in our heads. TEPP is based on Philip's two books – Radical Wholeness and New Self, New World – which articulate the causes, perils and challenges of our culture's disembodiment. Philip's personal journey to embodiment includes cycling alone as a teenager through Europe, the Middle East, Iran, India and Japan; studying classical Japanese Noh Theater; co-founding an interdisciplinary theatre company; and playing lead roles on stages in London, New York, Chicago and Toronto. In the non-Covid world, he travels the world sharing workshops, and running year-long Facilitators Trainings with his co-director and wife Allyson Woodrooffe. For those like me who had never seen a murmuration of starlings, you will not want to miss this beautiful sight here. Hello and Welcome to Unearthing Wellbeing with me Ask Elizabeth, Where Our Greatest Wealth Is Health. This episode I had the honour of speaking to an actress named Sarah Roberts who starred on a show I have been watching since I was able to walk and talk “Home and Away”. Sarah recently wrapped up filming on long running Australian Drama Home and Away starring role as Willow Harris. Sarah has also starred in the feature films Felony and UnIndian. Starting her career as a DJ Sarah stepped into the realm of acting in pursuit of new creative challenges. After training at the 16th Street Actors Studio, Sarah guest-starred in a number of Australian television dramas including Jack Irish and INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. After appearing Sienna Matthews in the 2014 Neighbours spin-off series Brennan on the Run. Sarah was everything I expected her to be and more. She was so nice and down to earth and we had both a giggle and cry together. It was so easy talking to Sarah, it was just like we had known each other for years. Her humility, liveliness and how she wears her heart on sleeve is emphasised. I cannot wait to share this episode with you all. I think you will too LOL and at times your heart strings will be pulled. Remember you are never alone, if you felt like this conversation triggered some feelings in you, please seek help. Hello and Welcome to Unearthing Wellbeing with me Ask Elizabeth, Where Our Greatest Wealth Is Health. I had the pleasure of having Anabelle Smith on the podcast. Anabelle is a dual Olympian in the sport of diving. She is an Olympic bronze medallist, three-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and has been on the National team for 10 years. Anabelle is dedicated to being the best version of herself in sport, and in life and puts great passion into sharing her experiences with other people. During my chat with Anabelle it was clear that she is very self- driven, passionate, kind and confident. Her purpose is to leave a positive legacy in Australian sport, and be an exceptional role model for the next generation. As this was recorded earlier in the year, Anabelle expressed her hopes for competing in the Tokyo Olympics. Anabelle currently sits on the Olympians Club of Victoria Board, and is also helping to shape Australia's sporting future on the inaugural AIS Athlete Advisory Committee. She is a recipient of the 2019 John Landy Scholarship through the Victorian Olympic Council, 2019 AMP 'Tomorrow Maker', 2017 sole Australian Olympian representative at the International Olympic Academy Youth Program in Greece, 2016 Victorian Institute of Sport ‘Spirit' award winner, Sports Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship recipient 2008, and 9 x Diving Victoria Athlete of the year. Aside from discussing her journey and career highlights, Anabelle spoke about some of her lowest points when she first moved to Brisbane on her own. She told me how she had to make a conscious effort to ensure that the experiences she went through would not occur again. Anabelle noted that if it weren't for them though, and hindsight, she wouldn't have a repertoire of techniques at her disposal to assist her, and putting her wellbeing as her priority. Training smarter, not harder and implementing Wellness Wednesday's, allows her to be at her prime both mentally and physically. It was such a pleasure speaking with Annabelle, she was so lovely and compassionate. To find out what unfolded, tune into this week's episode. Hello and Welcome to Unearthing Wellbeing with me Ask Elizabeth, Where Our Greatest Wealth Is Health. These episodes were recorded shortly after COVID-19 lockdown eased in Melbourne, thus, the discussions surrounding the whirlwind experience, Christmas and 2020 in general were in mention. This episode I had Motoring Journalist and Presenter Emma Notarfrancesco on the show. She has been on Aussie television screens for the last 10 years including: Sunrise; Channel Ten's News; reporting for international soccer events; then covering the Supercars pitlane. Emma presented for Which Car's automotive show, was a host and executive producer for Australian Superbikes, and reported for Australian Grands Prix, interviewing the likes of Daniel Ricciardo. Emma is also a proud ambassador for not-for-profit organisation ‘FIA Girls on Track.' I definitely felt like I was speaking to a girlfriend and that is exemplary of how easy Emma is to talk to. She was so chill, passionate and inspiring! We spoke about how COVID-19 saw her close some doors and open new ones, whilst in the process being able to show her viewers the “real Emma” during her Legends In Lockdown segment. Although motorsports makes up a big portion of her identity and livelihood, we also explored how fashion, skin-care, checklists and family are pivotal in respects to who she is. Welcome to Unearthing Wellbeing Podcast, Where Our Greatest Wealth Is Health. For Episode 08 I had Emily Duggan on the podcast, V8 Supercar Racer. Emily made her racing debut in 2014 as the first female driver in Series X3 and her name has been prominent since then, winning at the second race meeting and successfully claiming 26 podium finishes in the category. Since then Emily's career has continued to flourish, competing in the Toyota 86 series, Supercars Super3 series and being mentored by Paul Morris who labelled her the hardest- working driver in pit lane due to working on her own car mechanically. We spoke about how the pandemic has actually been a blessing in disguise for Emily, as she was forced to recover from burnout and take the time to heal, relax, and live a slower paced life, as opposed to driving at 150+km per hour on the race track! You can grab the link to the suggested meditative practice Emily mentioned in my blog post about mediation. As well as you can find out how the “flame” ignited in her to pursue this career path, as well as the reason behind why she pumps Christina Aguleria in her car rides by listening to her podcast. Off the track Emily's success has been recognised with nominations of Sports Women of The Year and New Talent of The Year in 2019 through women in sports awards. Emily is a proud ambassador for women in sport and actively encourages school girls to dream big with her work with Dare to be Different, an event program aimed at primary school girls. Emily's dream has never been to be the first girl, just the first over the finish line. In the history of Australian racing there hasn't been a female driver to win a Supercar race. This is the next achievement Emily is working towards to change. Emily can be reached on her website. I asked this next guest to come on to help educate others on the benefits of Ceremonial Cacao, her name is Amanda Lee. She considers herself a Women's Mentor and Ceremonialist. Earlier in 2020 I did a research piece on the benefits of food medicine and I thought why not have the person who I source mine from on as a guest to allow more people to learn about its benefits. You can take a read about it here. During the episode, I felt really grounded and our discussions surrounding plant medicine and holistic health epitomised how there are so many journey's people can go on, on their quest of discovery however it still lies in the realms of holistic health. For a second guest this person was exceptional and boy was she both eloquent in her explanations as she was (and is) intelligent!! Spoonful of Sarah / Sarah (Holloway) Davidson is a Lawyer Turned Funtreprenuer and like many other guests I will have on, I was first introduced via one of the challenges I partook in through Body By Finch, which she was an expert guest on. Anddd the rest is history!! Sarah is the one and only who brought MATCHA into the mainstream markets of Australia where it was neither easily accessible nor recognised, naming it Matcha Maiden. Then went onto launching a Melbourne cafe dedicated to all things Matcha (Mylkbar). Not to mention has a Spoonful of Sarah forum, is an Author, has a Seize the Yay podcast and merchandise owner which includes: flipbooks; t-shirts and necklaces!! Since our introduction I had purchased her book and I seriously felt like I was following her life events in symmetry, where her “sliding doors” moments were in fact occurring to me. Not to mention whilst reading I decided to bring this passion project up a notch plus continue to educate myself through this forum which is now called Unearthing Wellbeing. Sarah's humility is emphasised in spades during this podcast whereby she shares anecdotes, advice, and a giggle with me. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have her on and I hope you enjoy this episode. As you will hear she lives and breathes holistic health and has relocated to the shores of Byron Bay for a more laid back lax approach to life. This was prevalent in many of our conversations surrounding food, health, wellbeing and socialising. Lola's amazing podcasts can be heard here! Ask Elizabeth brings Unearthing Wellbeing to the podcast world. This first episode I give some insight into who I am and what the podcast is all about. My good friend Brigitte Hakim who is equal parts smart as she is beautiful, and was there from the birth of this baby, interviewed me as the first few takes with me solo were just too cringe! And what better way to come full circle. The questions we go through are some I ask my guests in future episodes, whilst you find out a little about me too, and when the sliding doors moment occurred that has led me to where I am now. So I hope you enjoy!
