Jill and Tom opened the show covering a number of news items. First, Mini is dropping the “Cooper” tag from its model names moving forwarding—this is good news for editors everywhere. Plus, one industry supplier is developing “heel” airbags. Listen in to learn what that's all about. And, Hyundai luxury brand Genesis is close to introducing a line-topping large crossover dubbed GV90. The big Genesis should start around $100,000. Still in the first segment, Jill and Tom review the sporty Subaru BRZ tS. Both hosts spent time with the little rear-drive hatchback, and both lament the little Subaru's low sales numbers. In the second segment, Jill and Tom welcome Ford's Lindsey Bertino to the show. Lindsey is the maker's Police Brand Marketing Manager. Lindsey talked about Ford's police-vehicle lineup, and the 75th anniversary of Ford's first police-vehicle. In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's “What's it made of?” Quiz.

The Toyota GR86 has had a surprisingly convoluted history despite its relatively short tenure in the Toyota portfolio. Once the flagship sport coupe that flew under the youth-oriented Scion brand as the FR-S, the coupe earned the 86 badge to ride out the remainder of its original generation under new management. For the launch of the second-generation car, Toyota stuffed the two plus two under its GR banner and renamed it the GR86 – adding a third name for the North American shopper to know. This second-gen coupe still shares a platform with Subaru's BRZ and still has flat-four power. However, the second-generation car now packs 2.4 liters of naturally aspirated flat-four power under the hood and throws 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the '24 Toyota GR86 and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the evolving, second-generation GR86 and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of Toyota's entry-level sport coupe. Adding to the show, Wren chats with Autoweek's executive editor Tom Murphy about the GR86, the competitive set, and more. The pair also look at how the GR86 compares to the Subaru BRZ on the sales charts. Closing the show, Murphy and Wren break down what makes the 2024 Toyota GR86 special.
We quickly review the fastest cars you can buy for less than $35,000: the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High-Performance Pack, 2024 Subaru Impreza WRX tS 6MT, 2025 Mazda3 Turbo AWD, 2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI 380 S manual, 2025 Hyundai Elantra N 6MT, 2025 Mini Cooper S and 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno 6MT (and Subaru BRZ twin). Plus 3 of the quickest – and most expensive – new GT cars on sale today: the 2025 McLaren GTS, 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63, and 2025 Bentley Continental GT Speed. === The Carmudgeon Show Sponsor, Vredestein Tires: https://www.vredestein.com/ Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === On this episode of the Carmudgeon Show, Jason vows to go on an all-expenses-paid trip to Lake Tahoe on Hagerty's dime to properly evaluate the van, Jynah's, grip in the snow (now that it's wearing a set of Vredestein Wintrac Pro tires). Then the boys dive into Gran Turismo – no, not the classic Playstation racing simulators – but rather attaining and maintaining high speeds over extended durations. More specifically, the “Old Man GT” episode of Cammisa's Ultimate Drag Race Replay, which features some of the quickest, most expensive, and impractical 4-wheeled jewelry money can buy: the McLaren GTS, Mercedes-AMG GT63, and Bentley Continental GT Speed. While discussing the new AMG GT63 (which no longer rides on underpinnings from the Dodge Viper lineage like its predecessors, the gullwing-door SLS AMG and the previous AMG GT, but now shares its platform and drivetrain with the SL line), Derek shares a nugget from his vintage Mercedes literature which shows SL buyers in the 1990s had significantly more money to spend than S-Class-buying plebes. And Jason theorizes that SEC owners likely had even more still. Speaking of the Mercedes, Jason laments that the new SL63's posterior profile looks suspiciously Porsche 911-y, but the duplicative flattery appears to date all the way back to the Porsche 356 and the contemporary Mercedes-Benz W198 300 SL Gullwing. In other news, Motor Trend Video is dead, and Jason is deeply empathetic. After the mourning, we delve into the next drag race episode: cars under $35,000! This episode pits the latest crop of cheap speed against one another in bracketed races with nearly every drivetrain orientation: naturally aspirated, turbocharged, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, manual, automatic, DCT, and so on. Unabashed boosted 4-cylinder noises assault the senses and appease the Abarth gods. Our first race pits the front-wheel drive cars against one another: the Hyundai Elantra N races the Mk8 Volkswagen GTI and the new F66 Mini Cooper S – which is completely overlooked by enthusiasts in 2024 (and is too cutesy for its own good), yet somehow manages to be effortlessly quick and best the OG hot hatch GTI. Then, the second race includes the rear- and all-wheel drive cars: the rwd Ford Mustang EcoBoost races the rwd Toyota GR86, the awd Subaru WRX and the surprisingly quick Mazda 3 Turbo AWD. And all Jason wants for Christmas is a GR86/FR-S/BRZ hatchback with a K24. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Paul Herrold of the Sons of Speed sits in for Jill again this week. Jill returns for the next episode. Paul and Tom opened the show discussing large pickup-truck sales. Tom had heard that the Chevrolet Silverado was outselling the Ford F-150 this year, which was inaccurate. Tom went down the list of the top pickup sellers in the third quarter. The hosts also noted General Motors' decision to drop the Ultium brand in relation to its electric-vehicle products. Ultium had been used by the maker to describe both vehicle architecture and battery chemistry. Listen in for a complete analysis. Paul and Tom went on to summarize Tesla's Robo Taxi reveal. The autonomous EV, intended initially for commercial ride-hailing use, features scissor-style doors, just two seats, and will not be equipped with a steering wheel or floor pedals. The hosts are skeptical. Tesla anticipates the Robo Taxi being available to users before 2027. Paul then talked about a Sons of Speed “The Lap” video, this one featuring the Subaru BRZ. Paul noted that even though the little Subaru isn't especially powerful, it is fun to drive in the right hands. In the second segment, Paul and Tom are joined by TELO CEO Jason Marks. Jason introduced the hosts to TELO, and its initial product, a pickup truck with the footprint of a Mini Cooper. Jason laid out near- and midterm plans for the TELO, including production and battery sourcing, as well as distribution. In the last segment, Paul is subjected to Tom's “Which Died Last?” quiz. To wrap up the episode, Paul shared some thoughts on the Subaru WRX, which he and fellow Sons of Speed editor Brendan Appel spent time with on the track.
Benjamin and Sami discuss the 2024 Subaru BRZ tS. Benjamin explains his thoughts on the confusing introduction of tS branding, and whether the new BRZ is still a champion of affordable driving joy. Then the duo discuss why the BRZ hasn't yet been fitted with a factory turbo, and how such a decision would shake up the automotive landscape. Is Toyota behind all of this? Thanks for listening!

G'Day and welcome to Overdrive, a program that dabbles in the material and magical world of cars and transport. I'm David Brown Overdrive is on sabbatical leave over the Christmas new year. So we thought we would replay some interviews from the past. With the 2024 Decker rally starting on the 5th of January we've dug up some chats with the Australian rally ace Molly Taylor who competed in the Dakar in 2022 among other things. The first interview is about her early career, traveling to the UK on her own and the second is when we caught up with her at the launch of the Subaru BRZ sports car at Sydney Motorsport park but also talked about her Dakar experience.

Alan and BJ Killeen – Automotive Journalist and Voice of Reason start todays episode of “The Drive” discussing Stellantis’ withdrawal from the Consumer Electronics Show due to the UAW strike’s impact. The Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ platform is extremely popular in the enthusiast market for plenty of reasons. It's simple, it's rear-wheel-drive, it handles, it's cheap — and there are few platforms out there that have the kind of aftermarket support that the ZN6 has. This is all to say that building one of these cars to a level where it stands above the rest takes something a little special. Cam Cocalis, this week's guest, knows this all too well, having built one of the most impressive 86s out there, and one that was good enough to find its way into the top 12 of last year's SEMA Battle of the Builders competition.Use “CAM100” to get $100 OFF our HPA Motorsport Fabrication Package: https://hpcdmy.co/fabpackagebCam has built something pretty special. It's one of the wildest ZN6s on the planet with a tube frame front and rear end, expansive cage, wild LS3 powerplant, custom cantilever suspension, and much more. The best part? Cam is only 22, and everything he's done to this car — design, fabrication, paint, wiring, and more — were skills that he learnt himself using the power of the internet. In this episode, we talk to Cam about how he became obsessed with the ZN6 platform in his teenage years (which wasn't that long ago to be fair), culminating at 17 years old when he bought this very FRS as his first car. With Cam's other main interest being art, he was able to transfer his creative side into the automotive world. We then jump into a full build breakdown on the Scion itself, in which Cam takes us through the whats, whys, and hows of the car. This machine went from your typical Rocket Bunny bagged-on-big-wheels 86 build to something worthy of SEMA glory, so there's a lot to cover.Cam also discusses wiring, design, and fabrication at length, covering his ethos behind many of the choices he made on the fabrication side, as well as a breakdown of all the tools he uses in his home garage — the total cost of which might shock you. This episode shows you that you don't have to be a professional in the industry or have the best gear in order to build top-level vehicles — you just need the right ideas, motivation, and a healthy internet connection. Let this conversation with Cam Cocalis provide the inspiration you need to get started. Dont forget, you can use “CAM100” to get $100 OFF HPA Motorsport Fabrication Package: https://hpcdmy.co/fabpackagebFollow Cam here:IG: @cam.cocalisYT: Cam Cocalis

Eric Penn joins Tim Keirnan and Ken Mayer to discuss the first customer experience phases of his new 2023 Subaru BRZ after a month of ownership. The "Toyobaru Twins" (Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ) are the same car with some slight differences. This vehicle is one of the best examples of "user-centered design" we have ever encountered in a product, and Tim owned the first generation for four blissful years. Eric has purchased the long-awaited and much celebrated second generation, and we go into intense detail on our first four defined phases of the customer experience: Encounter (02:44) Decision (07:21) Purchase (21:00) Initial Use (43:00) We will record an episode about Eric's longitudinal use in February of 2024 so that Eric has a full 12 months of ownership under his belt for that. On this podcast we are nothing if not thorough. In summary, the 2023 BRZ (the second model year of the 2nd generation of the car) meets or exceeds almost every criterion for delighting Eric as customer/user. The car's designers and engineers improved on the few weaknesses from the first generation without compromising what made the first generation so terrific. From the seating position, to the razor sharp handling, to the improved human-machine interfaces in the cockpit, to the new, more powerful engine, everything about this car screams or subtly implies "made for driving enthusiasts of light weight, nimble sports cars." Neither Subaru nor Toyota invented us to be so positive about this vehicle. It is incredibly well-focused on delighting a well-defined customer target.

Is aero completely ineffective unless you're going warp speed? How do you test the real-world effectiveness of your aero package without a wind tunnel? And should you just trust the claims aftermarket aero companies are making about their products? This week, we've got Paul Lucas of Verus Engineering to help answer these questions and more.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inVerus Engineering is well known for the development of aero components for a range of popular enthusiast cars like the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, MKV Supra, and Porsche GT3 just to name a few. As Verus products are on the higher end of the market, this conversation provides an interesting look into how these aero pieces are first decided on, then designed, manufactured, and validated to ensure that the real-world performance matches the simulation data. The ins and outs of popular aero devices — like swan-neck rear wings, for example — and how they work are also covered, which should give listeners a better understanding of what is and isn't worth their time when they look to bite the bullet and invest in aerodynamics for more speed.Paul studied engineering at university and has spent his career honing those skills in the automotive world. Besides founding and co-running Verus, he also contracts out to other companies and race teams for general motorsport engineering design services, and that means this episode is full of useful information and advice ready to be soaked up by any listener that's looking to get into, or further their career in, the engineering side of our industry.Follow Verus Engineering here:IG:@verusengineeringFB: @Verus EngineeringWWW: verus-engineering.comInterested in learning how to do your own wheel alignment for the track or street? It's the last day of November and we're ready to flip into the final month of the year as we talk about new S&P data that shows Tesla's shrinking market share. The 2023 Nissan Ariya crossover SUV is the long-awaited production model based on a battery-electric concept that was first displayed in 2019 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Ariya's American launch was postponed until late 2022, based on COVID-19 concerns. And with that Nissan lost what could have been a strong competitive edge. In the interim, several other automakers have introduced new crossover EVs, leaving Nissan to play catch up. But having driven the all-new Ariya we can say with assurance that the vehicle is all it should be to compete in the segment, and a whole lot more. With coupe-like exterior style and an innovative and simply beautiful interior, the Nissan Ariya seems destined to find more than its share of buyers when it comes to market toward the first of the year. It leverages the learnings Nissan has gained as one of the mainstream electric-vehicle pioneers. And it takes those learning from the Nissan Leaf in an entirely new direction.Initially, only front-drive Ariya models will be offered, but later they will be joined by variations with the innovative e-4orce all-wheel-drive system. In addition to the choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive, buyers will also be able to choose between long-range and standard battery arrays. Prices for the 2023 Ariya start at $43,190 for the front-drive Engage trim. Our test vehicle, driven at North American Car of the Year testing in Michigan, was a 2023 Nissan Ariya Premiere with an as-tested price of $58,850. Also in the road test segment, AOTR Co-Host Chris Teague took the 2023 Subaru BRZ sports coupe through its paces in the beauty of the Maine fall. The 2023 BRZ test car was powered by a 2.4-liter 228 horsepower “boxer” engine paired with a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission. (A six-speed electronic direct-control automatic transmission is optional.) Offered in two trim levels, The Subaru BRZ has a starting price of $28,595, and is a true bargain in driving fun. The BRZ's list of standard features includes a Torsen limited-slip differential; keyless entry, LED headlights, stability control with track mode and dual-zone automatic climate control. But the big question is this: Could it contain the six-foot-tall Chris Teague with his daughter in a booster seat behind him? We'll answer that question and others in this week's edition of America on the Road. This week our special guest is Mark Bole, who is Vice President and head of Battery Solutions for General Motors. His arm of GM is ready to deliver electric power, not just to your cars, but also to your home. And he'll tell that fascinating story in an interview with Host Jack Nerad in this episode.

The Subaru BRZ and its Toyota sibling made waves in the early 2010s. Subaru's sports coupe bucked the growing crossover trend by simply being what it is: a rear-driven and front-engine sports coupe with an affordable price tag. After nearly a decade on Subaru dealership lots, the folks in charge decided it was time to roll out its replacement. The '22 Subaru BRZ didn't deviate from its original formula and just fixed what needed fixing. The big draw is the BRZ's new engine. While Subaru stuck with the beloved boxer, the 2.0-liter mill is gone. In its place is a larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The larger engine and revised tuning help fix some of the previous BRZ's biggest problems and drastically increases the BRZ's drivability. The 2.4-liter boxer sends 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2022 Subaru BRZ and puts it through its paces. Wren walks you around the new BRZ before climbing in and highlighting the new BRZ's interior. Later, Wren takes you on a live recorded drive review of Subaru's new sports coupe. Adding more insight, Autoweek's west coast editor Mark Vaughn talks with Wren about the BRZ's price, competition and more. Closing the show, the two talk about what makes the 2022 Subaru BRZ special

In this week's episode - we talk about the snow that CNY received last week. Adam has some stuff planned for both of his cars still, maybe he did them this past weekend? AJ plans to get his brakes looked at. And Bruce sees Godzilla. Our movie this week, Club Dread. We then talk about an interesting price increase in the new Subaru BRZ. It's transmission-related, can you guess what's going on? The dumbest thing we realized about our car later than we should have. All of us get confused about how we start our cars and how remote starters factor into that. Etiquette when sharing a car with coworkers, Bruce fills us in. Adam learns some interesting history behind his B7 RS4, and AJ has a stroke in the middle of it. In the second half, a twofer - cars that are flawless except for one thing, and cars that are absolute trash except for one thing. William Riker's sittings habits. And this episode's primary segment, movies that depict a future of cars that didn't quite turn out as expected. Think Blade Runner or Back to the Future. And then a mild taste of trivia. As a reminder, we'll be at the Wegmans on Route 31 in Clay this Saturday for the year's first Cars n' Coffee. Following that, we'll be hitting up SUNY Morrisville for their car show.
