The review embargo lifted today for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the bag is more than a little mixed. Critics are either praising the film for its fun action adventure nature of the bounty hunter and his foundling or others are saying the film does not live up to the iconography that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is known for as well as having too small of a story for the big screen. With this being the first Star Wars film in seven years, a lot is likely riding on the performance of Din Djarin and Din Grogu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been quietly dishing details on not only Avengers: Doomsday but Secret Wars across his various media appearances in recent days. On Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Thing actor admitted the Doomsday script he read didn't have a finished third act saying, "I don't think it had an ending,” and described the production as so compartmentalized and "interstellar" that he'd repeatedly go back to Joe Russo to have the multiverse threading re-explained. Then in a separate chat with the Dog Day Afternoon Broadway team, a play based on the 1975 film the actor is performing in, he casually dropped that Secret Wars filming kicks off in August 2026, right after his stage run wraps in mid-July.HBO set August 16 as the premiere date for Lanterns and dropped a new trailer that complicates the show's dark, earth-based mystery pitch with shots of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan in the classic Green Lantern uniform and what appears to be an off-world setting. The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner and reveals Laura Linney in an undisclosed part opposite Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. Matt Reeves used a series of X posts last week to officially welcome Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch to Gotham for The Batman: Part II. They join the previously confirmed additions of Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, and Charles Dance as Harvey's father Christopher. Henry, a Marvel alum from Eternals who also memorably appeared in 2019's Joker, marks his second trip into the DC sandbox, while Koch is known for his prestige work appearing in films like Bridge of Spies. Michael continued another strong run at the box office this weekend and has now crossed $700 million dollars worldwide while the Devil Wears Prada 2 also continued its solid streak, crossing the $500 million dollar mark internationally. Mortal Kombat 2 crossed the $100 million dollar mark in its second weekend. Horror film Obsession opened very well with $23 million dollars worldwide, a big opening for a film from a first time director acquired out of a film festival. Marvel is making some changes to leadership in its comics division. The company has promoted Brad Winderbaum, already its chief of television and animation, to head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise. At the same time, David Abdo, former manager of Disney's music division, will transition to serve as Marvel's general manager, comics and franchise, reporting to Winderbaum. With the new top leadership coming in, that means that Dan Buckley, the longtime Marvel Comics head, is departing. Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition.HBO's Harry Potter series will already be recasting a role as production begins on season 2. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming season 1 will not return for Season 2 of the series due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' Cochrane and her family revealed in a statement.Disney+ has begun development on Ella Enchanted, a TV series based on the 2004 Miramax fairytale film of the same name that starred Anne Hathaway, who will return to produce the series. Anyone But You writer Ilana Wolpert will serve as showrunner.A final look trailer for Prime's Spider-Noir, starring Nicholas Cage, was dropped today.

How To Practice "Sympathetic Happiness" With Helen Schulman

SHIFT HAPPENS

Helen Schulman is an acclaimed novelist, screenwriter, short story writer and New York Times Bestselling author. In my 40th episode, we talk about the concept of "sympathetic happiness", as she shares her impactful encounter with the Dalai Lama many years back.  She was visiting Portland, Oregon for the first time, exploring the city, when she basically stumbled over His Holiness: he was giving a free public audience in Pioneer Square, Helen had never heard him speak before so she stuck around. His topic was "sympathetic happiness". The idea being that if you can join in the happiness of others, your own happiness will multiply. His deceptively simple and profound theories really struck her - she had been teaching grad school for quite awhile by then, and realised that if she could be really happy for her students' successes, if their joy became her joy her life would become fuller and richer and well, happier. She always felt happy for them, but now she could focus on also being happy through them. It was a small good thing that happened to her that day, but it has really affected the rest of her life and her work as an educator.Once Helen understood this concept, it made it easier and more compelling for her to build programs that she thought would help her students reach their dreams, and also, pragmatically, help them find agents and editors, and outside work.Helen also talks about her new book "Fools for Love" that was just published in July during this recording, and she had a book launch at Rizzoli's in New York City. It's a collection of short stories, that she edited and interconnected so that they relate to each other. She also shares how she learned how to waltz from her grandmother, and how she relearned it with her husband last year in a dance class in a beautiful castle in the South of Germany (she wrote a piece about this for the Condé Nast Traveller).HELEN SCHULMAN is a novelist, screenwriter and short story writer. A collection of stories, Fools for Love, has been published by Knopf in July 2025. Prior to publication, the title story was published in The Atlantic. Her newest novel, Lucky Dogs, was one of Oprah Daily's top ten novels of 2023. She is also the author of the novels Come With Me (San Francisco Chronicle ten best books of 2019) This Beautiful Life (a New York Times and International Best Seller), A Day At The Beach, P.S., (made into a motion picture starring Laura Linney, Gabriel Byrne, Paul Rudd and Marcia Gay Harden, for which Professor Schulman has a screenwriting credit), The Revisionist and Out Of Time (Barnes and Noble Discovery), and the short story collection Not A Free Show. She co-edited the anthology Wanting A Child with Jill Bialosky. Her fiction and non-fiction have appeared in such places as Vanity Fair, Time, Vogue, GQ, The New York Times Book Review, A Public Space and The Paris Review. She is the Fiction Chair at The Writing Program at The New School where she is a tenured Professor of Writing. She is also the Executive Director of WriteOnNYC.com. A 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, Professor Schulman has been a NYFA Fellow, Sundance Fellow, Aspen Words Fellow, a Tennessee Williams Fellow (Columbia University) and the recipient of a Pushcart Prize.####On another note: I am so proud and excited to announce that SHIFT HAPPENS' Season 5 is supported by London based jewellery brand Tilly Sveaas. Amy talks, slurps martinis, and just wants to go home. Oh, she's also a gorilla. Behold a movie from the team behind Jurassic Park (well, except for that Steven guy) that begs us to consider who would win: a hundred gorillas or Laura Linney with a laser gun? Don't let Amy drink alone as we discuss outrageous accents, questionable plot devices, and the very niche subgenre of ape movies - the racially repugnant ones of the 1930s/40s and the curiously kooky ones from the 90s. Most people don't think of themselves as creative. We say, “I'm not artistic,” or “I can't perform,” and leave it at that. But the truth is, creativity isn't reserved for the select few. It lives in everyone. It's baked into how we think, feel, dream, and respond to the world. The problem is that most of us were taught to shut it down. We were told to color inside the lines, follow the rules, and keep things appropriate. Over time, we stopped expressing the weird, wonderful parts of ourselves and started believing that creativity belonged only to the professionals. But performers like Jennifer Blaine know better. Jennifer is a comedian, improviser, and creativity coach who doesn't just entertain, she activates. Her shows invite people to stop watching and start engaging. Through playful characters, spontaneous interaction, and real-time coaching, she helps people bypass their inner critic and access the creative voice that's been waiting inside them all along. Because when someone is bold enough to play in public, it sparks something in the room. It gives the rest of us permission to try, to improvise, to be ridiculous, expressive, and alive. How do we use play and improv to pull out our true expression? In this episode, Jennifer shares how performance becomes a portal, why creative energy is always running beneath the surface, and how just a little bit of play can bring people back to life.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode -The gaze that frees How does simply being seen without judgment ignite your creativity and confidence? -Performance as permission Why does witnessing play unlock something in you, and how can performers create the safety for that to happen? -Improvising with life We're all improvisers. So, how can you get better at dancing with the unknown instead of fearing it? -From grief to genius Can play be the most honest response to pain, transition, or loss, and how does it open doors to new expression?   Guest Bio Jennifer Blaine is an actor, comedian, playwright, and character chameleon. She has been performing one-woman shows for 25 years. Her original writing, performing, and comedy delve into serious and socially relevant issues and provide audiences the opportunity to unite in laughter. Jennifer has opened for George Carlin and performed with Chris Rock and Joe Piscopo. She has worked with great actors such as Glenda Jackson, Christopher Plummer, Laura Linney, Joanne Woodward, and Paul Newman, and was featured on ABC's Philly After Midnight: Women Comedians. She starred in the animated series “Teddy P. Brains,” in which she played a precocious brainy boy, and has lent her voice to hundreds of voiceover projects. According to the Philadelphia Daily News “not even Sybil can compete with Blaine's cast of characters. Due to Avengers: Doomsday filming, the studio is opting not to pause production to fly actors to California. Marvel will still have panels and events throughout SDCC, just not the spectacle of Hall H, which has become a mainstay for the MCU particularly. This news is coupled with a recent appearance from the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps at the CCPX promotional fan event in Mexico City last weekend, as well as buzz surrounding a supposed test screening for the fast approaching filmAt the TUDUM fan event this weekend, Netflix finally revealed the final season of Stranger Things will air in three parts late this year. The first will premiere November 26, followed by part two on Christmas and the series finale on New Year's Eve .Netflix also unveiled trailers for two of its anticipated upcoming films, Frankenstein - directed by Guillermo del Toro - and Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man - directed by Rian Johnson. The films premiere in November and December, respectively, and both feature star-studded casts - something we've come to expect from Johnson's Knives Out films and what makes sense for a filmmaker as storied as del Toro. Frankenstein features Oscar Isaac in the titular role, as well as Jacob Elordi as the Monster, plus Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz. Knives Out 3 is helmed once again by Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, and has a list of A-lister stars including Jeremy Renner and Kerry Washington. The second full summer box office weekend was favorable, with Disney's live action Lilo & Stitch up 51 percent from the prior week, and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning climbing up 55 percent. Sony's Karate Kid Legends opened to a $20 million domestic weekend as well.
