Jim Carrey gave critics a new view into his talents in the Peter Weir hit, The Truman Show. Back in 1998, the psychological comedy-drama captivated audiences with its unique premise: a reality TV world that “is not fake but controlled.” Yes, we followed dear Truman as he was hoodwinked daily by everyone in his life, all for the sake of ratings. But now, decades of reality TV concepts later, is the movie interesting enough to hold up to today's outrageous standards? Did Meryl and Marlon really kiss their real lives goodbye to live a lie? And why is Christof (Ed Harris) the worst? The Old Roommates set sail for answers and discuss it all through their middle-aged lens. Join them, with no commercial interruptions!Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Caring for an elderly or infirm parent is a common experience that is less commonly depicted on screen, particularly with a comedic bent, which is why Azazal Jacobs' new HIS THREE DAUGHTERS inspired us to revisit the 2007 dramedy THE SAVAGES, which writer-director Tamara Jenkins drew from her own experiences dealing with a father with dementia. Much of the film's success lies with the performances of Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman as siblings whose estranged father's deteriorating condition serves as catalyst for their own midlife crises, and a script that trusts in their performances to convey the situation's unexpected yet accurate mingling of tragedy and comedy. Then in Feedback we get negative, with one listener writing in about why a recent film we covered “broke” them, and another inviting us to share the beloved films that we just can't help but dislike. Sullivan, who witnesses the altercation, escapes with evidence of the killing. When he becomes prime suspect in an investigation led by local police, Whitney devotes himself to exposing the president's misdeed while evading Sullivan's hired assassin — who believes Whitney is responsible — as well as a secret service agent who wants to silence the only witness. On this week's show, Megan and Dave watched SPEAK NO EVIL (2:29), writer-director James Watkins' remake of the Danish film from 2022. As with many non-American horror films remade for American audiences, the new SPEAK NO EVIL leaves the original's first two-thirds relatively unchanged and then kicks the last third in the ass, replacing it with a watered down ending that, while not entirely stupid, ain't exactly aces. (That being said, the Danish original is extreme. Take a listen to our reactions to it here.) So while we weren't enamored of this new version, we think leads Mackenzie Davis and James McAvoy (at 100 percent) do excellent work, and the changes do have a few good moments sprinkled in. (And Megan likes Aisling Franciosi's performance, too.) Then we talk about SEEKING MAVIS BEACON, a documentary by director Jazmin Jones about her attempts, along with producer Olivia McKayla Ross, to find Renée L'Esperance, the Haitian (and original) model for the software program Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. We had varied reactions, with Dave being more forgiving (!!) than Megan and Evan, who feel the film is dragged down by its pacing and all the problems that can come with uneven editing. Over on Patreon, we watched another movie that has a big twist: PRIMAL FEAR with Richard Gere, Laura Linney, and Edward Norton. It was a first-time watch for Evan, and we have fun talking about how the ending and wheether it holds up 28 years later.

Owners Hope and Bev Yankey are committed to keeping it that way so native brook trout might one day thrive downstream. The conservation-minded couple turned to Trout Unlimited and its Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative for help.  Brook trout's sensitivity to water temperature and conditions make them an excellent indicator of stream health. That's why the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement made restoring brook trout a goal of the federal-state effort to clean up the Bay and its tributaries.  The work can be expensive and complicated. Fortunately, an array of federal and state grant programs exists to help cover the costs and provide technical expertise to landowners, like the Yankeys, who want to protect valuable natural resources on their property. The goal is “to regenerate and let the land come back. The farm provided a living and now it's time to give back,” Hope Yankey said.  Read more: https://www.cbf.org/blogs/save-the-bay/2024/08/keeping-west-virginias-water-wild-wooly-and-wonderful.html   #3 – From TODAY – It's a busy time to be Jeff Wamsley, the owner and creator of the world's only Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.  Most recently, the mythic Mothman creature has received its very own “Unsolved Mysteries” episode on Netflix. But the Mothman was well known long before the popular Netflix reboot came to be. Thanks to “The Mothman Prophecies” movie in 2002 starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, the phenomenon is now part of pop culture, Wamsley says.  Wamsley, who is also the author of “Mothman: Behind the Red Eyes” and co-author of “Mothman: The Facts behind the Legend” shares the Mothman's eerie origin story, which dates back to November 1966 when the Silver Bridge collapsed. Jon Lovett and Erin Ryan join Max to discuss how “The Truman Show,” predicted our current era of continuous surveillance and content mining. The movie may be from 1998, but its insights are just as applicable 25 years later—from cults of celebrity, to Fox News, to Instagram. Is Ed Harris' dome over Burbank a cautionary tale about fascist governance? Do we all hide parts of personalities, depending on context? Why was Jon Lovett freaked out by the Hunger Games premiere? Can you imagine living in a world where millions of people are glued to their screens 24/7, watching the life of an ordinary person unfold while being bombarded with advertisements that are disguised as part of the entertainment? Of course you can! It's 2024, and we're already there. But back in 1998, the premise of THE TRUMAN SHOW was still a pretty radical idea, giving moviegoers a glimpse of the future shortly before the reality TV boom of the 2000s and long before the rise of social media. Audiences who thought they were in for a summer comedy starring Jim Carrey found themselves instead confronted with deep philosophical questions about freedom versus choice, artifice versus authenticity, surveillance versus privacy, and other heady topics - unaware that they were witnessing the rise of the world's first influencer. The film stars Jim Carrey as likable everyman Truman Burbank, who's lived his entire life unaware that every move he makes is broadcast to adoring fans across the globe. His mom, his wife, his best friend, and everybody else in town are in on it. The Truman Show gave Carrey newfound credibility as a dramatic actor and showcases peerless supporting performances from Laura Linney as Truman's increasingly unhinged wife and Ed Harris as the God-like “creator” behind this massive production. There's no question that Peter Weir's fable-like film was ahead of its time in numerous ways, which only lends itself to an even richer conversation than was possible back in the late 90s. But how does this unusual blend of comedy, drama, and satirical science fiction hold up as entertainment now that there are millions of Truman Burbanks among us? Is the movie held back by dated technology and a plot that hinges on 1990s broadcast television, or is it time to hail The Truman Show as a timeless masterpiece? Welcome back to the Hello Monday Master Class! We've distilled the essence of hundreds of conversations into five essential rules that will empower you to thrive in an ever-changing professional landscape. It's week four, and we are focused on something that is truly critical to success: getting creative. In this episode, we learn from creativity strategist and author Natalie Nixon, and celebrated actress Laura Linney. Our culture is productivity heavy, but just tasking through a to-do list doesn't move culture or solve problems. We need creativity for that. So today, we'll talk about how to leverage creativity in what Natalie calls a “VUCA” environment - volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Laura shares her willingness to let the process of making and doing feel deeply uncomfortable - to invest in the process itself rather than obsessing over a desired outcome. And Natalie introduces her key to creativity - a framework of three “i”s. For this week's exercise, we're leaning into inquiry! Head over to our free Hello Monday group on LinkedIn and share one of the best questions you've ever been asked. Then, check out some of the other contributions and start talking with other master class listeners. You can join the Hello Monday Group by clicking here. Want more on Natalie's methodology of toggling between wonder and rigor? Listen to Natalie's full episode of Hello Monday here and follow her on LinkedIn. We are huge fans of Laura Linney's, and appreciate her framework for withstanding the mushy middle of creative processes. This conversation with Laura even got us nominated for a Webby back in 2020! If you're as interested in Catholicism and the arts as we are here at AMDG, you might also have been excited to see that a new movie about Flannery O'Connor's writing and life is now playing nationwide. The movie is called “Wildcat,” directed and written by Ethan Hawke and starring his daughter Maya Hawke, who plays both Flannery and a range of characters who appear in the author's stories. The movie blends traditional biopic narrative with detours into brief adaptations of O'Connor's stories, bringing the author's churning life alive in a moving, provocative way. The film was the younger Hawke's idea, who first read O'Connor while in high school. The father/daughter team assembled an incredible cast of folks including Laura Linney and Liam Neeson, and we cannot recommend it to you highly enough. Today's guest was also intimately involved in the birth of the film. His name is Eric Groth, and he served as one of “Wildcat”'s executive producers. Eric's background is in producing Catholic films, including the 2018 movie “Paul, the Apostle of Christ.” He initially found his way into filmmaking sort of by accident, looking to use the medium to reach teenagers during his career in Catholic youth ministry in the 1990s. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Eric about why and how he got involved in “Wildcat” and what it was like to work with Ethan and Maya Hawke. They also talked about Eric's own vision of the intersection of faith and creativity and why, in his words, he likes to make “Catholic movies for atheists.” It was a fascinating conversation and we can't wait to see what Eric works on next. Joshua Hren, editor-in-chief of Wiseblood Books, joins the podcast to review Wildcat, the new Flannery O'Connor biopic directed by Ethan Hawke and starring Maya Hawke and Laura Linney. The film is a respectful and nuanced portrayal of O'Connor and her faith, accomplished by extensive quotation from her prayer journal and letters, as well as several interludes depicting her short stories (which keeps the film from feeling like a formulaic biopic). Wildcat's portrayal of the relationship between artistic ambition and faith is deeply relevant to Catholic artists. It should inspire them to find creative ways of dealing with the pressures that would subvert their God-given gifts, whether those pressures come from other Catholics, family, or the art world. We're of differing opinions on Laura Linney's low-key Lady Macbeth, but eye to eye on the welcomed presence of Kevin Bacon and Laurence Fishburne, Smalls from The Sandlot, queen Jenny O'Hara, queen Eli Wallach, Clint Eastwood's beautiful score and who is truly the Hottest Scott. It's been two decades since Richard Curtis's Love Actually warmed our chilly W. Bush-era hearts, and oh what a pair of decades it's been. Now, the movie is back in theaters for its anniversary, and Ify has seen it for the first time. Does it hold up? Can we enjoy it anyway? “He's such an idiot for running right into this fucking turbine…” - Eric on Alan Rickman's character's adultery On this week's episode, our mission to bring Holiday Cheer to you and yours is almost completely derailed with a jumbo-sized discussion on the bloated, miserable, obnoxious holiday fave, Love Actually! When is the feature-length Andrew Lincoln stalker film hitting Shudder? Why couldn't someone tell Richard Curtis to pick less than 8 storylines for one film? Why couldn't Laura Linney's character get a happy ending? And how is that little kid getting away with all of this airport shenanigans so soon after 9/11? PLUS: Elton John writes some sausage roll-related Christmas parodies to try and win the Christmas Number Ones contest!  Love Actually stars Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Rodrigo Santoro, Gregor Fisher, Colin Firth, Kris Marshall, Heike Makatsch, Martin Freeman, Joanna Page, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Andrew Lincoln, Keira Knightley, and Bill Nighy as Billy Mack; directed by Richard Curtis.
