POPULARITY
We call upon a wise man to help us explore what it means to be a hipster. While we have him, we share the history of Mason jars, why they are associated with hipsters, whether this is fair or not, and why the hell we should even care. Look for us to rap about our mutual experiences regarding Mason jars in the south, layering critical analysis in food, sustainability in food packaging and how to make a million dollars in the HOT field of artisanal drink ware. We had originally planned on talking about the amazing diversity Indiginous North American tribes brought to a robust food culture ranging from Alaska down to the Caribbean, and the impact that their techniques and practices have to this day on what and how we eat. Then we met Roo, and decided we just wanted to listen to him talk. In this episode we discuss the revival of lost crops, colonial waste, the meaning of an important Catawba word for family, and the actual role of white guilt. We hope you will check out the links, follow everyone involved and if you can, help with any donations. Thank you! In her first book, The Lost Boys of Montauk, journalist Amanda Fairbanks documents the story of the Wind Blown and the four men who lost their lives aboard it in 1984. Piecing the story together over years of interviews and research, she unraveled a history of close-knit communities, from the working class east end to the wealthy upper east side. She also found a complicated tale of relationships and personalities that still absorbs people in the community to this day. A July night at Riverhead Stadium in 1950. Two baseball legends face each other without even realizing it. Satchel Paige, fabled Negro League pitcher, is on the mound for the Philadelphia Stars. Young Carl Yastrzemski Jr. is in the stands, cheering for his dad on the Riverhead Falcons. The sellout crowd in a stadium barely a year old is a testamant to the long history and deep popularity of baseball in the area. Fabio Montella of Suffolk County Community College recounts the story of that night and of baseball in Riverhead. Riverhead Stadium was just the latest iteration of a long-standing connection to the sport. Welcome back to the awards ceremony. Today we hit the beach to talk to Mary Cascone, Babylon Town Historian, about the Oak Beach Life-Saving Station. Perched between the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, the station withstood the ravages of wind, rain, and Superstorm Sandy. It has been moved a few times and gone through a number of uses but still retained much of its original details when the Town began its restoration in earnest in 2013. You'll hear about Mary's quest to uncover the full history of the building, the challenges of the preservation project, and the local, state, and federal support that made it all possible. Who knew that firehouses were such deep sources of local history? In the town of Islip, they are overflowing with trophies, photos, devices, and mechanisms going back to the 1800s. There was so much history, in fact, that a dedicated group of firefighters and volunteers spent over two decades making the Islip Town Fire & EMS Museum a reality. Hear Tom Rinelli, the museum's historian, describe that rich history and what it tells us about life (and fires) on Long Island, the evolution of firefighting, and the unique brotherhood of people who volunteer to run into burning buildings. OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND: In this episode, Sean discusses topics spanning forced sterilization, to the elusive cervix, to HPV vaccines, to Pap Smears, to health insurance, and everything in between (okay, maybe not everything). When I first began this crazy journey into podcasting, I was both nervous and excited by the idea of interviewing people. I reached out to a local Planned Parenthood in the hope that a representative would be willing to speak with me about Pap Smears. I thought it was beyond a long shot, but sure enough, I heard back from Sean, the medical director himself. While I have been a long time supporter of Planned Parenthood and the resources it provides women, and all people, this interview was the first time I'd ever visited one. It was a wonderful experience; the staff and space were so welcoming. The interview took place on a sunny Friday afternoon, and Sean and I sat outside in a little courtyard attached to the Planned Parenthood building. You may notice some background noise on the recording of the interview (adds to the ambiance, am I right) - those are the sounds of 5:30pm at what is basically a 5-way intersection, so thanks for rolling with the added atmosphere. The interview was originally done with Gyno Girl's "Pap Smear" episode in mind, but I soon realized that the interview deserved an episode of it's own as well. (Note: you can still hear Sean speak in the Pap Smear episode too!)
