Tim and Jeff went to Lou Gehrig Day together and have some amazing people to shout out, including our friend Michael Brown. Plus, it was pretty awesome to see who was on the mound that day. The Guardians are really good, and that's not going to change anytime soon. Is Jacob deGrom a Hall of Famer? We debate the numbers after his 100th win. Plus, an ambidextrous glove is flying off the shelves, which makes us seamheads extremely happy. On This Date in Baseball History, we remember the great Don Zimmer and share some incredible stories, including a special moment Jeff had with the late baseball legend at Fenway Park. He is very much missed. Alphabest tackles the best "K" batter and pitcher. We're not sure how much debate there really is, but weigh in and let us know in the comments. Three Cards delivers some hilarious stories, including one about a hitting pitcher who put George Brett to shame. Team Tim might be a little too smart for us, but you be the judge. June baseball was once a dream in Morgantown. Now, it's reality. The most remarkable season in West Virginia baseball history added another unforgettable chapter Monday night when the Mountaineers outlasted Kentucky in extra innings to capture the NCAA Regional Championship. The victory capped a four-day test of endurance, resilience, and belief. Facing elimination and mounting pressure, WVU answered every challenge with three consecutive wins in the most dramatic fashion imaginable. Now, the reward is historic. For the first time ever, West Virginia University will host an NCAA Super Regional. Standing between the Mountaineers and their first trip to the College World Series is Cal Poly, which arrives in Morgantown this weekend for a best-of-three series with a place in Omaha on the line. In this episode, the “Guys” are joined by WVU head coach Steve Sabins for an inside look at a program-defining weekend. Sabins breaks down the key moments, pivotal decisions, and relentless mindset that carried the Mountaineers through one of the most memorable stretches in school history. Two wins away from Omaha, West Virginia's dream season continues.

Memorial Day is today, and we thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can continue to live in a free country. We’re grateful beyond words. So many major leaguers have put their lives on the line to serve our great country, and we talk about some of the best during today’s episode. And don’t forget to wait for Team Tim! Konnor Griffin has clearly figured something out in his 20s — you love to see it. Plus, Christopher Sánchez is doing something for the Phillies that hasn’t been done since before World War I. And Trey Yesavage? Yeah… you’re not homering off him. There were strikeouts everywhere, including a pair of Yankees teammates who might be swapping places in the record books. Nolan Arenado did something amazing on just the sixth pitch of the entire game. Plus, what in the world is going on with Tatis Jr.? On This Date in Baseball History, we talk Omar Vizquel, Josh Beckett, Joe West, and Chris Young. We also hear about Tim’s homemade jersey for which player? Our guest for Chapter 1 is John McMurray, chair of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR)'s Deadball Era Research Committee. His essay, "September 1, 1906: A Pivotal Game Early in the Deadball Era," appeared in the Committee's newsletter, "The Inside Game," earlier this year. The game between the Philadelphia A's and the home team Boston Americans (now Red Sox) lasted 24 innings with the A's winning 4-1. The game featured many deadball era baseball features including speed, defense, strategy, moving the runners, crowd participation and heroic pitching with each starter pitching complete games in this marathon contest. McMurray paints a vivid picture of deadball era baseball at the turn of the last century by walking us through this amazing ballgame. In Chapter 2, Craig and Rex discuss blue dot fever that is causing artists in the pop music business to cancel shows and entire tours this summer.Join the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) here:https://sabr.org/communityThis is a cbc.com story on the Live Nation Lawsuit discussed in Chapter Two:https://www.cbc.ca/news/investigates/live-nation-executive-exclusive-9.7191295Episodes featured: 220 - In an Instant It Was All Gone: The Ray Chapman Story w/ Scott H. Longert; Ep. 72 - Seeing the World Through Baseball w/ Cousin Wolf (Matt Halvorson).Errata: Craig mistakenly referenced the 1915 A's as one of Connie Mack's better teams -- that A's team finished 43-109, following one of Mack's sell-offs. The A's won 4 AL pennants and 3 World Series titles from 1910 to 1914. Vic Willis, a Hall of Famer, lost 29 games pitching for the 51-103 Boston Nationals in 1905, not 26 games.Consider supporting Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including those featured in this episode (if any were), through our store at Bookshop.org. Pitching across baseball is absolutely electric right now—and we’re loving every second of it. Tim and Jeff Kurkjian are back together in person and debut a brand-new segment, “The Wheel of Kurkjian,” inspired by your suggestions. After one full week of baseball, the show is packed with highlights. Quirkjians and On This Date in Baseball History lead the way—but not before Jeff kicks things off with a classic April Fools’ Day prank on his dad. “Three Cards in the Bathroom” and “Alphabest” spark plenty of debate between the two. And when it comes to the best “B” last name pitcher and hitter? That’s up to Tim—but we want to hear your picks. Remember: this is his list, not the list. A big thank you to our friends at GameChanger for supporting another GameChanger of the Week. This time, we spotlight a player who wasn’t even sure he’d make the team out of Spring Training—but once he did, he made it count.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Professor David Henkin, a historian of American culture and author of Out of the Ballpark, joins the Wharton Moneyball team to examine how baseball's history, statistical evolution, and fan engagement reveal a complex, ever-changing sport that defies any single interpretation. We’re celebrating Opening Day this year with our friends at GameChanger. They’ve been an incredible partner for the past couple of years, and nothing captures the spirit of Opening Day quite like family—which is exactly what they’re all about. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Opening Day should honestly be a holiday. Maybe next season we make that happen. At the top of the show, Tim dives into some of his favorite Opening Day memories, and he wraps things up with a “Team Tim” featuring some all-time Opening Day heroes. On This Date in Baseball History highlights some notable names, and we’ve got another edition of “Three Cards in the Bathroom” this week. Tim even made the trip up to Jeff’s house—just like old times—so we could put together a true celebration of an episode for everyone. One thing to remember: this season could be your team’s season. It’s the best time of the year—so hold onto that kid-at-heart energy heading into 2026. It makes everything more fun. SNOWED IN! We had a blast recording this episode from home—both of us snowed in (outside, of course). Tim was rescued by the plows just in time to hit record. Jeff, meanwhile, somehow still made it to his full-time job.On This Date in Baseball History, we tip our caps to “my man” and Harold Reynolds. And whenever Tim breaks out the cards, you know it's going to be a good time. We also settle the debate on the greatest player to wear No. 59—and yes, it's a current player!Plus, a puzzling story from Tim involving his grandson proves that even a guy with a massive baseball brain can struggle when it comes to actual puzzles. All this and more on this week's edition of Is This a Great Game, or What? Our last interview with Harold Reynolds brought out quite a few great Bo Jackson stories—and Tim has an update on what Bo himself thought about them. After that, of course, we dive straight into the World Series. We hope you're enjoying the action as much as we are—it's the perfect mix of dominant pitching and incredible hitting.Naturally, Tim got a little bored on the cross-country flight and started coming up with a few anagrams that had us scratching our heads. But hey, that's one way to pass the time at 35,000 feet!On This Date in Baseball History, we've got more great October moments for you to stash away and use to impress your friends and family later. Plus, the Quirkjians—though a bit slim this week—dig a little deeper into the mysterious eBay glove saga that we know everyone's still curious about.
