In this episode, we have the return of Jeff Lilley from episode 9. Jeff is a pastor at Fullerton Free Church and among many other things, Nole's dad. We brought Jeff back specifically to talk about the age-old question, "why do bad things happen to good people?". With the recent tragedy in our department, we felt it would be a good time to explore some of the deeper and more difficult questions that so many of us have at some point in our lives. This conversation goes deep and we know you will get a lot of good stuff out of it. If you enjoy this episode or feel that it helped you in any way please share it with someone you know. We would like to thank Facedown Records and My Epic for the use of their song "Hail" in the podcast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz2RZThURTUThe Problem of Pain by C.S. We're finally back for another episode! Did you miss the pod?! We brought in Jeff Lilley and Katie Smylie this week to talk through some questions that you all sent in about dating, sex, and marriage.
Do you ever doubt the things that you read in the Bible? Ever skeptical of the things that you hear in church? Jeff Lilley joins us in talking about doubt in the faith. He discusses his story and how he searched for truth, along with giving us practical tips on how to continue to seek God in the midst of confusion.
If you are feeling anxious about the future, about covid, the election, life in general, this conversation helped both Kevin and I personally with all those things and a lot more. This is a deep conversation that also manages to stay light and funny at the same time. We talk about so many things I cannot list them all here but the highlights are as follows: Jeff being mistaken for an active shooter and having police officers draw their guns on him, stories from his time working at a funeral home, going out to collect bodies for the funeral home, Santa Maria Tri-tip, marriage advice, parenting advice, the fact that it rains in Portland, how working for an ice cream shop leads to weight lifting, how to deal with mask mandates, knowing you are dying and the desire for a painful death, and too much other good stuff. Seriously, this is a long episode but worth every moment of your time, start listening now!Big thank you to Facedown Records and My Epic for the use of their song "Hail" for our intro/outro! In Have the Mountains Fallen?: Two Journeys of Loss and Redemption in the Cold War, Jeffrey Lilley's new book puts the spotlight on Kyrgyzstan. He examines the threat and legacy of the Soviet empire through intersecting narratives of a captive people's aspiration for freedom. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: After the witnessing the collapse of the Soviet Union as a journalist in the 1990s, Jeff Lilley moved to Central Asia in 2004. During a three-year posting in Kyrgyzstan, he started reading the works of Chinghiz Aitmatov, slept in yurts, drank fermented mare's milk, and hiked in the country's beautiful mountains. Over the following ten years, as he worked in the field of democracy and governance in support of Washington, DC, and the Middle East, he continued researching Aitmatov while adding Altay's remarkable life story. He finished writing the book in 2016, shortly before returning to Kyrgyzstan to lead a British-funded parliamentary support program.
