Some women dream of launching a career before 25. Some dream of owning their first home. Jemma Lilley had a different goal: she wanted to kill someone before her 25th birthday, but she knew she couldn't do it alone. Obsessed with serial killers and violent fantasy, Lilley set her sights on turning desire into reality. She found an accomplice in Trudi Lenon, an impressionable single mother whom she gradually drew into her world of fixation and planning. Together, they searched for what they chillingly described as the “perfect victim.” They chose 18-year-old Aaron Pajich-Sweetman, a vulnerable teenager who was a friend of Lenon’s son. It is a case that still shocks those who hear it. A real-life horror story about manipulation, obsession, and the calculated, meticulous planning of two women who conspired to take the life of an innocent young man. ABOUT THE EPISODE:If you've been waiting for the right moment to bring up the idea of getting your young adult some support, and you're not sure how to do it without blowing up every landmine between you, this episode is for you. Joanna Lilley, therapeutic consultant and host of the podcast Success is Subjective, is back on Hopestream, and she's pulling back the curtain on what it actually looks like to help a young adult move toward help. Joanna works exclusively with the 18 to 29 crowd, and her approach is deceptively simple: meet them where they are, agenda-free, not where your fear wants them to be.What makes Joanna's process so potent is the way it preserves a young adult's agency at every step. There's no attempt at maneuvering them into a decision or finding the magic words that finally crack them open. It's about creating the conditions where they feel like the architect of what comes next, and why that buy-in matters more than the program itself. Joanna also gets real about what she's seeing shift in the treatment landscape right now, including why young adults are staying longer in programs, how the complexity of what's showing up has changed dramatically, and what questions parents actually need to be asking before you commit to anything. When you listen, you'll learn:Why some young adults may have a deeply distorted picture of what treatment looks like, and how to gently disrupt that narrative without pushing them further awayHow Joanna structures her first conversation with a young adult so it feels like a genuine exchange rather than a formal ‘intake' processWhy giving your young adult the choice of who to work with matters just as much as the choice of where to goWhy it's wise to start the ‘what might treatment look like' process before you think you need to and what it might cost you if you waitEPISODE RESOURCES:Joanna Lilley (Lilley Consulting) websiteJoanna on Hopestream podcast episode #208 Joanna on Hopestream podcast episode #39This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityGet our free, 4-video course, Hope Starts Here, and access to our Limited Membership hereLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Over the holidays we're looking back at some of the best episodes of 2025. Self-defence laws are back in the news, with Alberta's government recently directing Crown prosecutors to refrain from charging people for using force in “defending themselves and their loved ones.” Yet police suggest that if you face a violent home invasion, you need to give up and not fight back. That's wrong, as criminal lawyer Solomon Friedman told Brian Lilley: The power to defend yourself, your home and others (including killing an assailant if it's justified) is backed by the courts and the law. In this episode, Friedman and Lilley discussed why the message cops keep sending risks making innocent people into defenceless targets while encouraging criminals to become fearless. "The first pew in the old time Black church is the Moaners' bench." - Gary Copeland Lilley Artificial intelligence and it's racist assumptions suggests "mourners' bench" as a clarification, but the moaners' bench refers to the audible expression of those in spiritual need due to grief, the blues, or simply the harshness of our time. Raven On The Moaners' Bench is the title of the latest collection of poetry from Gary Copeland Lilley. As Parliament prepares to resume, a Radio-Canada report says pipelines are nowhere on the Carney cabinet's agenda. That puts Ottawa at odds with Alberta and Saskatchewan, where Premiers Danielle Smith and Scott Moe have been clear: if the federal government wants energy projects to move forward, it must repeal or rewrite C-69, lift the West Coast tanker ban, and scrap the emissions cap. Guest host Kris Sims is joined by Toronto Sun columnist Brian Lilley to break down the politics and the math. Lilley explains why companies won't propose major projects under today's rules — pointing to regulatory uncertainty and past cancellations like Northern Gateway and Energy East — and warns shelving pipelines now would inflame Western alienation and damage national unity. They also dig into the economics: stalled investment, lost revenue, and Canada's widening GDP-per-capita gap with the U.S. Lilley argues predictable rules — not pauses and reviews — are what industry needs across oil and gas, autos, steel and telecom. Finally, the show tackles youth unemployment and immigration policy. After Doug Ford suggested young people should “look harder” for work, Lilley notes Ontario's youth jobless rate is elevated and entry-level markets are squeezed by the temporary foreign worker stream, expanded work rights for international students, and rapid inflows of work-eligible newcomers. In this episode, Lisa and Joanna discuss:Exploring alternatives to the traditional college timelineThe evolving role of parents in post-secondary decision-makingEmotional and psychological challenges facing college-bound teensThe importance of preparation and intentional planning for life after high schoolKey Takeaways: College readiness is less about academic performance and more about whether a student can live independently, manage their time without reminders, handle stress in healthy ways, and recover from inevitable challenges like failure or rejection.Choosing to delay college in favor of a well-planned year of work, volunteering, or self-directed learning through platforms like Coursera can give students the clarity, maturity, and practical skills they often need but didn't gain during high school. When a student shows signs of burnout, struggles with mental health, or has never had to navigate real consequences on their own, it's usually a sign that stepping back from school to focus on personal growth is the healthier long-term decision.Families who agree in advance on how they'll stay in touch, what success looks like during the first semester, and how financial support will be tied to progress tend to create stronger trust and smoother transitions into adulthood. “College is an experience out of the home for the first time... If your child has never had the opportunity to experience any adversity... that's going to be tremendously harder for them when they land on a college campus.” – Joanna LilleyAbout Joanna Lilley: Since 2016, Joanna Lilley of Lilley Consulting has been helping young adults (18+) find mental health, substance use, and wellness resources.
