The Essential Scottish Football Podcast pays tribute to Walter Smith in the week the legendary Rangers manager is honoured by the club, its fans and Scottish football with a public memorial in Glasgow. In an exclusive interview with Walter, recorded in March 2021, the day after Rangers broke Celtic's nine season stranglehold on the Scottish title, Jim Traynor delves deep into the Smith archive with Walter and unearths fascinating footballing gemstones. Walter talks about his joy at last season's title win and pays his respects to Rangers' fans when he recalls the way they stuck by the club through the recent bad times. The bond between the supporters and the club is unbreakable, he says. His reflections about Steven Gerrard's first three seasons, culminating in winning title number 55, are honest and straightforward in typical Walter-style. And, he puts forward some thought provoking ideas about how the game could be restructured from the top, fuelled perhaps by the bitterness he still felt about the decision to force Rangers to play several games before the UEFA Cup Final in 2008 while Zenit enjoyed 10 days off. This programme is a fitting tribute to Walter Smith, a man who will rightly be remembered as one of the game's greatest ever managers. As Scotland reels from the news that Jermain Defoe went for lunch, Adam is fortunate to be joined by two fantastic guests from the media in his attempt to make sense of it all. Journalist and academic Jennifer M Jones talks about covering League Two matches, the relationship between clubs and the media, Rangers charging reporters for access, Billy Gilmour's Ardrossan lunches, football rivalries, social media dopamine hits and how to stay sane on Twitter. ITV News Scotland correspondent Peter Adam Smith discusses 'riding into battle' against Charles Green, getting on the wrong side of Jim Traynor, Steven Gerrard's motivation, the reporting and policing of Rangers fans at George Square, bringing David Martindale's inspiring story to a UK-wide audience and exposing the anti-Rangers sandcastle lobby. Adam enlists Trevor Noah and Jerry Seinfeld to put an end to Lionel Messi v Michael Jordan discourse, calls on his guests to help him debunk a myth involving Scottish football media bias, looks at the controversial work of noted epidemiologist Brendan Rodgers and brings up The Joan Burnie Incident again. After the car crash podcast number 184 where Harry Brady tinkered about to see how the controls all worked, this week he has been released to do a full podcast. Harry starts off by explaining that Michael Dolan has crossed the stream but that his history has been taken forward by the special guest Hullbhoy. Harry tries to start the new era in controversial fashion by talking about the disapointing nature of home domestic form, but the two lads quickly get onto the wonderful European run. Oh and at the end there is some Jim Traynor bashing just for old times sake.
