Was Dundee United's 1980s golden era one of Scottish football's greatest achievements?Under Jim McLean, Dundee United defied expectations, conquering Scotland and making their mark on European football. But was their success a fleeting moment or a true era of dominance? In this episode, Graham and Jamie explore Dundee United's rise, their triumphs over giants like Barcelona, and the tactical genius of McLean that took them to the brink of European glory. In this episode:
This week we're revisiting the epic 2003 UEFA Cup final between a young Jose Mourinho's Porto and veteran Martin O'Neill's Celtic. We breakdown both club's squads and stars (Deco! Henrik Larsson!), tactics, and storylines, before diving into their respective runs to the final, then the final itself. Join us in the time capsule, where two famous sides gave us the ultimate spectacle that just so happened to be a pivot point in the history of European football. Cheers to (can't believe we're saying this) Jose Mourinho!
Rory is joined by the latest contributor to join the Football Heritage ranks, Jonee João, to reminisce on the 2003 UEFA Cup Final between Celtic and Porto. Instead of a tactical breakdown or analysis of the match, Rory and Jonee instead describe their memories of watching the final, their feelings on the run up to the final and, in Jonee's case, what it was like watching his club win a European trophy. In the second of three stand-alone shows this month we're celebrating the incredible achievements of Scottish sides reaching major European finals as they mark landmark anniversaries this year.In this episode, we're focusing on Rangers and their unlikely and, ultimately, unlucky run to the UEFA Cup Final in the 2007/08 season.Andrew Slaven and Findlay Marks caught up with former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson - an integral part of the side that made it all the way to Manchester - to hear his recollections from that legendary campaign.
In 1981 Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town came very close to winning the treble, but leading into the Uefa Cup Final of that year, it was the only silverware left that could frank a remarkable year. AZ Alkmaar, the newly crowned Dutch Champions stood in their way.
It was a weekend of coronations as both Celtic and Dundee were crowned champions of their respective divisions. Join Andrew Slaven, Laura Brannan and Findlay Marks as they reflect on Ange Postecoglou's side clinching the title with four games to go and the dramatic end to the Championship season. Is the SFA disrespecting the fans with their 17:30 Scottish Cup final kick-off slot? And who will win at the PFA Player of the Year Awards this weekend?Meanwhile, it's 40 years since Aberdeen won the European Cup Winners' Cup. Hear a sneak peak of Scottish football legend Richard Gordon's memories ahead of a special episode released on Wednesday. This week also marks 15 years since Rangers' run to the UEFA Cup Final. Ahead of a feature length interview with former Ibrox midfielder Kevin Thomson dropping this weekend, listen to a short preview on this episode about Kevin's recollections moments after the final whistle in Manchester.
Lesley is in Gothenburg for this episode and while she focuses on its sustainable transport system Pat still manages to get in his lasting pain over the 1987 UEFA Cup Final defeat for Dundee United.Lesley's latest article in The National certainly got the comments flying in its call to focus on the big issues facing the SNP and the broader Yes movement rather than engaging in grieving and gloating. We try and get beneath the reactions to the core of what challenges and opportunities face the SNP membership before the annual conference.Meanwhile Rishi Sunak on his flying visit to the Scottish Tory Party Conference decided that it was a braw idea to exclude the majority of the Scottish press from his post speech press conference. To say that this backfired was an understatement. It can't have escaped our notice, despite at best, apathy in Scotland, that this Saturday will see the coronation of Charles III. We reflect on the pomp and circumstance and the possible own goal by the English Premier League requesting that clubs play the national anthem before all games. A precedent not followed by the Scottish football authorities. We also discuss the tensions inherent in being Scottish FM and a republican for Humza Yousaf and compare his situation with that of Michelle O'Neil leader of Sinn Fein, who'll also be attending the coronation.Edinburgh University cancelled the showing of the documentary Adult Human Female on safety grounds after action by trans rights protestors. This seems to have had a knock-on effect with Joanna Cherry's appearance at The Stand Comedy Club as part of a series of shows during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe also being cancelled due to staff concerns. ★ Support this podcast ★

“Step back, don't try to kiss me, right about now I'm 50/50”. Not out words, pals, but the words of popular hit maker Lemar. You know what, 50 is a pretty magic and baffling number for us this week, so please, why not come and join us for Episode 50 of The Dogger Saints Podcast! For once, you might actually enjoy listening to us talk about football, as the Saints picked up four points in a week, so we discuss all the action from our trip up to Aberdeen and glorious home victory over high flying Hearts. We also tackle all the big issues, and don't tell us we shy away from them, as we take a deep delve into pies and also look at whether Blue Shorts could be the key to avoiding the trap door to the Championcinch. But it wouldn't be our big bash without a barrel-load of features, and we've got them all as Sam and Dan put aside a domestic in order to have a celebratory trip to see George in The Royal, Dave comes on to try and work out just who the bloody hell Wendy is, and we delve to places unknown in this weeks Club Shop of Shame. Dan conveniently forgets the 2003 UEFA Cup Final! Sam's Chicken Tonight based memories of childhood! Brian Clough shithousing superstition! We've got it all, and much more including a look forward to our trip to Dingwall at the weekend. Maybe Dan will fall down a hill again, who knows?! Thank you all so much for getting us to Episode 50, and we'd love it if you came and joined us for it. Get there!
In this episode, John B and Ross are joined by Rangers fan and author Alistair Aird. The timing of Alistair's appearance is somewhat unfortunate given the recent defeat by Celtic, but he and Ross don't avoid the discussion and dissect on what went wrong for their team that night, but why they believe the title race is very much on. Alistair then discusses his love of Rangers and how it began by looking at a programme of a League Cup Semi Final against Dundee United in 1986/87 that had Davie Cooper on the front cover. He attended his first game in 1988 at the age of eight, so naturally the nine-in-a-row years is his favourite era. He also fondly recalls last-day title wins over Aberdeen and the Alex McLeish title victories of 2003 and 2005, plus the memorable run to the UEFA Cup Final. We then move onto Alistair's love of writing and how he's combined this and his love for Rangers by releasing a series of books on individuals and era's of the club, including the autobiographies for Davie Wilson, David Robertson and Mark Hateley. There are also some very good tips for any aspiring writers in what makes a good book, with trust being the key ingredient, something John and Ross found useful for their upcoming titles. The podcast rounds off with slow fire questions including Alistair's best Rangers XI. Here's another chance to hear my second Big Interview with Kevin Bridges from season four.We hear about Celtic fan Kevin's adoration for Henrik Larsson, what it felt like to get his phone number and how he can't rewatch the 2003 UEFA Cup Final because of Henke's despair at winning just a runners-up medal. As well as being one of the world's funniest guys, Kevin is a genuine football connoisseur and there's great stuff about his love for La Liga. His eyes lit up when I mentioned Ronaldo; no, not Cristiano, but the original and in some people's eyes best, Brazilian, Ronaldo. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Essential Scottish Football Podcast pays tribute to Walter Smith in the week the legendary Rangers manager is honoured by the club, its fans and Scottish football with a public memorial in Glasgow. In an exclusive interview with Walter, recorded in March 2021, the day after Rangers broke Celtic's nine season stranglehold on the Scottish title, Jim Traynor delves deep into the Smith archive with Walter and unearths fascinating footballing gemstones. Walter talks about his joy at last season's title win and pays his respects to Rangers' fans when he recalls the way they stuck by the club through the recent bad times. The bond between the supporters and the club is unbreakable, he says. His reflections about Steven Gerrard's first three seasons, culminating in winning title number 55, are honest and straightforward in typical Walter-style. And, he puts forward some thought provoking ideas about how the game could be restructured from the top, fuelled perhaps by the bitterness he still felt about the decision to force Rangers to play several games before the UEFA Cup Final in 2008 while Zenit enjoyed 10 days off. This programme is a fitting tribute to Walter Smith, a man who will rightly be remembered as one of the game's greatest ever managers. CHRIS JARDINE promised Annan he would play with them for life if they could get him a ticket to see Rangers in the UEFA Cup final. And after they produced the goods, so did he. The midfielder came through the ranks at Ibrox alongside the likes of Barry Ferguson and Barry Robson. We'll look back on those days when he would get training gear ready for Gazza and Brian Laudrup. But it was at Galabank where he made his name across 17 years. After starting out in the East of Scotland League, he captained them as they moved into the senior divisions and is now a legend at the club. But after hanging up his boots he's been learning the ropes in the dugout. In July he was appointed assistant boss at Lowland League side Dalbeattie Star. We'll find out just how he's adapting to life in the new role at the Islecroft Stadium. Plus there's chat on Oasis, two pairs of socks, staying in digs with Davie Moyes' parents, dealing with rejection and the day his family walked out at half-time as he helped Annan win at Ibrox. The 1984 UEFA Cup Final was "my best night in football."We continue our journey through the career of Micky Hazard with the Spurs legend himself, and learn about more of the characters he shared dressing rooms with, as well as the details surrounding his move across London to Chelsea, and how he was sought out to become the poster boy for Asics football boots.
Dotun and Tim are joined by John Gibbons of the Anfield Wrap, they take a look back at the 2001 Uefa Cup Final and remember former France and Liverpool manager Gérard Houllier.
Unfortunately we started off this week with the sad news of the passing of Gerard Houllier. My earliest memories of falling in love not just with Liverpool, but Football, were with Houllier's Liverpool team that won the treble. Most specifically Michael Owen scoring two goals against Arsenal in the FA Cup final and doing a somersault and then Gary McAllister (who I fortunately had the privilege of meeting in California) whipping in a free kick that was headed in for an own goal during Golden goal in the UEFA Cup Final. That started my journey to playing football for my whole youth, then leading into pursuing a football career coaching in California for 8 years, and finally back to Scotland now talking about football with some of my closest friends and my brother. So the Weekend Review this week is dedicated to Gerard. I will finish off this description with a quote from him that sums up how not just football should be, but life itself: "Generosity always pays off. Generosity in your effort, in your work, in your kindness, in the way you look after people and take care of people. In the long run, if you are generous with a heart, and with humanity, it always pays off" Thanks for the memories Gerard, Cannon.

With today marking Robbie Fowler's 45th birthday, we thought it only right to look back on 'God' and his two spells at Anfield. Guy Clarke is joined by the ECHO's Liverpool correspondent and chief LFC writer Ian Doyle to reflect on the Reds all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Having scored 183 goals in 369 games we look into his Reds career from bursting onto the scene as a teenage goalscoring sensation, into playing a vital role in both the League Cup Final and UEFA Cup Final in 2001 there's plenty to get into. How his move to Leeds back in November 2001 went down, as well as of course the reception for his return in 2006 as Rafa Benitez brought him back to the club. Enjoy. This week on Golazzo, Jimbo, James Horncastle and Gab Marcotti look back to a time when it was always sunny in Filadelfia. Gigi Lentini took Torino to new heights, including the UEFA Cup Final, and ended up in a transfer tug of war between Milan and Juventus in the summer of 1992. Lentini took Silvio Berlusconi’s helicopter to the San Siro for a world record fee. £13 million was so astronomical that it managed to offend the Pope. But his life was changed forever as he sped to visit Toto Schillaci’s wife in 1993 and wrote off his Porsche. It was also the end of his career at elite level, thanks to a combination of a coma and Capello. In the modern day, we review the action in Serie A where Chievo are no longer pointless and Milan manager Gattuso has angered the government. Welcome to part 2 of the interview with Erik Meijer! Feel invited for sort of a goose bumps feeling, when he is telling a story before the UEFA Cup Final between Liverpool and Alaves. Since he had a ligament injury he could not play. So before the game started, he was outside the stadium in Dortmund with some friends of him, but when the LFC supporters recognized him, they lifted him on a big rock - after having had some beers together ;) – amid the centre of downtown Dortmund and he had to sing a song for them “You´ll never walk alone …” and thousands of LFC supporter started following him. A day he will never forget in his life!
During a fourteen-year association with Wolves John won two League Cups and also played in the first UEFA Cup Final in 1972. Hear his story and some of his favourite music.
