Since research suggests that past maltreatment of a child is the best predictor of future child abuse or neglect, several states have enacted a program called “birth match.” This program compares the names of parents of newborns with lists of individuals who have previously killed or seriously injured a child or had their parental rights terminated. Are these programs worthwhile? Should other states follow suit? In this episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by https://childwelfaremonitor.org/about-2/ (Marie Cohen), a child welfare policy analyst, researcher, and former Washington, DC social worker. Marie describes the birth match systems as they have been adopted by five states and explains the challenges she faced when gathering research for her latest report. Despite opposition to birth match from both civil liberties advocates and progressive activists, Marie says that the goal of the program is non-partisan— protecting children—and hopes that it will become more widely adopted. Orlando City returned from the international break and immediately was pressed into two matches in quick succession. However, the Lions handled the schedule well, fighting back from a goal down to earn a road draw at New England and taking care of business at home against the Houston Dynamo by earning all three points. We break down the two matches and select our Man of the Match from each game. We also discussed the ongoing problems that Robin Jansson has with the league's referees. Just speak Swedish, big fella! Please! OCB goalkeeper Javier Otero got a short-term contract to serve on the bench vs. the Revs but in the end his presence wasn't needed because Pedro Gallese might be an actual octopus rather than just someone with that nickname. The Orlando Pride were historically bad at Portland and if things don't change soon, these types of results could start occurring far more often. The club's NWSL side just can't compete in the league at the moment after a promising start to the year. To make matters worse, Orlando doesn't even have a center back on the bench at the moment. When will things get better? Maybe 2023? 2024? Who knows? OCB was almost as bad as the Pride on Sunday, falling 6-1 at Columbus. There wasn't even a Jack Lynn goal to celebrate, although Nick Taylor did manage to help the Young Lions avoid the shutout. This week's mailbag asked us about the new turf at Exploria Stadium and our experiences at other sports venues. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally we gave our key match-ups and predictions for Orlando City's trip to FC Cincinnati. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 299 went down: 0:15 - A draw and a win for Orlando City's MLS team has things going in the right direction and the Beefy Swede has to learn the value of silence. 38:52 - The Pride and OCB got some excercise and fresh air but did nothing resembling playing soccer on Sunday. Summary: The sun is out and people are either making out or getting murdered! Today, Holly and Devin dish on books that take place at summer camp. Their key takeaways were that these lighter romances and thrillers are a blast, and the setting creates all kinds of tension - whether creepy tension beside Murder Lake, or sexy tension in the medical tent.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:14): Devin discussed You Have a Match by Emma Lord. This book brings protagonist Abby to a summer camp, confronting not only her crush and best friend Leo, but the biological sister she didn't know she had until she took a DNA test, Savannah. Her key takeaways were: The book, told from Abby's perspective, has a vivid sense of place and the key cast of characters are all well rounded and engaging. Abby, as a photographer and clumsy adventure seeker, is someone we can all rally around.  Beginning with the Big Embarrassing Incident (B.E.I.) that hints at a burgeoning romance with her best friend Leo, the book explores the romantic possibilities, but ultimately that isn't the main focus of the plot (to Devin's chagrin).  A surprise biological sister in Savannah turns this book much more into a coming-of-age story, and ultimately Lord perhaps packed too much into a single book to do every plotline justice.  The Dagger (18:55): Holly discussed The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager, a thriller spanning decades that begins with the disappearance of three girls from Camp Nightingale. Protagonist Emma Davis has become a successful artist in New York City in the 15 years since her friends disappeared, but is called back to work as an art teacher by Franny Harris-White, the camp's owner. Holly's key takeaways were: The book centers around a “two truths and a lie” structure, playing into the camp classic to build tension and mistrust for anyone involved in the cold case that Emma just can't let go of.  Assigned to the same cabin and bunk she occupied when her 3 friends snuck away to evaporate into thin air all those years ago, things quickly turn incredibly creepy and Emma is haunted by the sense she is being watched.  The rich setting and the isolation of a sleepaway camp allow Sager to turn up the intensity quickly on a woman who has processed her trauma as a child via vivid art depicting the girls she was never able to find.  Hot On the Shelf (36:33): Devin: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin Holly: Fuzz by Mary Roach What's Making Our Hearts Race (42:14): Devin: Bill Nye's MasterClass Holly: The Righteous Gemstones on HBO Max Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

How to Attract More Success into Your Life

Here is a quote I personally love and am I'm using inside my life… YOU Must Become Better First Jim Rohn said, “Success is not to be pursued.  It is to be attracted by the person you become.” I love that!   Why? Because I've utilized this in my own life. You see, I've always pushed hard for everything I've achieved.  I've worked hard for everything I had my life.  I work hard because I felt that if I worked hard, I would get the things and the lifestyle that would make me happy and help to fulfill me.  What I learned later in life is that “things” don't really make you happy.  Then, as I grew and became more and more successful, I decided that I'm going to start living a life on purpose.  I decided to live life doing the things that will make me happy.  I started to do more things that were short term gratification (that I felt would create that sense of fulfillment), but also things that would help me to be happy.  But still, there was something missing.  I finally learned the ultimate lesson … that you need to be able to work hard and take massive action…But you also need to learn to ATTRACT the life, the success, and the prosperity. LEARN THIS LESSON NOW…Use the Law of Attraction You have to leverage the Law of Attraction in order to attract what is best for you and your life. You'll attract everything you desire, as you become a better and better person.  You'll benefit from this proven law of the universe… TAKE MASSIVE ACTION, THEN ALLOW SPACE FOR ATTRACTION Now you've probably seen or read The Secret which covers the Law of Attraction.  The principal, however, has been around since the beginning of time. There are many resources you can master about the Law of Attraction, even inside of The Daily Mastermind app. I truly believe that most don't ultimately understand this universal law.  This is a universal law of prosperity. Bob Proctor does an amazing job teaching a lot about the Law of Attraction because he talks about it a little differently.  He explains it is actually two distinct laws:  the Law of Vibration (primary) and the Law of Attraction (secondary).  These two laws work together in harmony and the more you understand them, the more you can use them to create your life. So, what do you need to do in order to ATTRACT more success into your life? Well, you have to grow “yourself” …you have to grow personally.  For example: learn to increase your confidence.  increase your energy so you're operating at a higher frequency develop your mindset  shift your paradigm, the view you have of the world  create focus with specific intentions of where you want your life to go There are many strategies and things you can do in order to personally develop and attract more success in your life.  We talk about them each and every day on this podcast. But here are just a few reminders, so you can have context for this Pillar today… DAILY RITUALS Daily rituals will help you increase your confidence and your energy level—two for one. DAILY AFFIRMATIONS To grow your mindset and change your paradigm, have daily affirmations.  This will allow your subconscious and conscious mind to go to a whole new level. Write out your affirmations and repeat those morning and night or writing them down and having them in front of you is a very solid strategy. LIFELONG LEARNING Next, lifelong learning that we just talked about that a few days ago.  Lifelong learning will definitely help you to be able to attract success in your life as you personally grow your knowledge and skills. SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY Also, surround yourself with successful people.  Surrounding yourself with more successful, prosperous, happy, and fulfilled individuals will expand your life.  That frequency and that attraction is going to happen even at a higher degree for you with the higher vibe of those around you. INCREASE YOUR FAITH Lastly, the strategy that I really want to emphasize today is faith.  Yes, faith. Faith is a decision to have confidence and trust that you will create the life you desire and attract it toward you.  This is different than belief. Belief will come as you grow your actions.  Create new experiences, and your belief will begin to change.  But faith is a decision. Choose To Believe…You can choose to believe that success is going to be attracted into your life.   Albert Einstein said, “Everything is energy and that's all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want, and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way.  This is not philosophy, this is physics." Do you part to work with and leverage these amazing universal laws, and the energies of your life will bring the success you desire. I know that you have greatness inside of you.  Now let's get it!
