We like to think we vote with our heads. But what if we've always voted with our tribe? Top political comedian Matt Forde convenes his Focus Group in front of a live theatre audience with a razor-sharp panel — former Conservative adviser Salma Shah, ex-SNP MP and broadcaster John Nicolson, and stand-up comedian Pierre Novellie — to ask whether tribal loyalty is the secret engine of political life. From parties haemorrhaging members to rivals, to the flag-wrapped contradictions of nationalist politics, to the question of whether multicultural Britain is importing conflicts it never signed up for, this is an episode about belonging, identity - and the ridiculous places both can leadWritten and performed by Matt Forde Additional writing from Karl Minns, Ruth Husko and Richard Garvin Producer: Richard Garvin Co Producer: Daisy Knight Broadcast Assistant: Ocean Holder Sound Design: David Thomas Editor Chris Maclean An Avalon production for BBC Radio 4

Simon Marks sits in and is joined on Cross Question by broadcaster David Aaronovitch, political commentator and social activist Nimco Ali, former Conservative MP and justice secretary Sir Robert Buckland and John Nicolson, journalist and former SNP MP.
Alex chats to John Nicolson – now a former SNP MP – reflects on what went wrong for the SNP and how to fix it, as well as a wide range of topics, from the US presidential race to behind-the-scenes insights on the life political. And there's a little regret that he and his SNP colleagues weren't a little more awkward when they descended en masse on Westminster. With candid observations on some of those with whom he has shared the political stage – and eyebrow-raising revelations about his close call on the operating table – this is a must-listen for all fans of planet politics, not just those from north of the Border. "It's a bit like bereavement, when you lose. The worst time is the morning. You wake up and you feel unhappy and you can't quite remember why, and then you go: no, that's why. It's very sad." "The truth is, people vote for parties. And there was an electoral wave, which individual candidates, such as myself, found impossible to resist." "I was very outspoken on trans rights. I'm not in favour of Scottish independence because I want to go out there and wave the Saltire. I'm not a flag fetishist. I support it because of the kind of society we can build... Scotland, on a whole number of metrics, is now amongst the most liberal countries in Europe." "My grandma left school at 12. I went to university and ended up getting a scholarship to Harvard. It transformed my life, free university education." "We've got to have a mature discussion about how Scotland leaves the UK, if we want to. If there is no mechanism to leave, and we're told we can never have a referendum, well, it's not a voluntary union." "The Tories are a funny lot. I grew up with Clause 28 and all that ghastliness. And then, when I was elected, I looked across to the Tory benches... I mean, it was like a night out in Soho." "Obviously if that was my choice, I'd vote for Biden. But if Biden wants to do something for his nation now, I think he should stand aside. I hope vanity does not prevent him." "I have no time for people who say: they're all the same, they're all liars. They really aren't. There's good people in all the parties. And there are honest, well-intentioned people in all the parties. Engage. Don't be lazy." Learn more about your ad choices. Following the chaotic scenes in Parliament on Wednesday Sonia Sodha of The Observer analyses the political week. Dr Ruth Fox of The Hansard Society explains why an opposition day debate about Gaza, and calls for a ceasefire, descended in to bitter arguments about parliamentary procedure. John Nicolson of the SNP discusses why his party thinks the Commons Speaker should resign over the issue. And, to reflect on the wider crisis, Sonia speaks to former Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood and the Chair of the International Development Select Committee, Sarah Champion, who has just returned from a trip to the Egypt-Gaza border. On Monday the Business Secretary, Kemi Badenoch, gave a robust response to claims made by the former Chairman of the Post Office who she had previously sacked over the Horizon scandal. Sonia speaks to two MPs who were in the chamber for that statement: Conservative Conor Burns and Labour's Kevan Jones, who has campaigned for many years on behalf of wrongly convicted sub-postmasters. And, after Keir Starmer's chief of staff suggested Labour could make use of citizens' assemblies to decide on contentious issues, Sonia brings together Louise Caldwell, who took part in the Irish citizens' assembly on abortion, and Joe Twyman of Deltapoll, who has helped run such assemblies in the past.

In this episode Drew sits down with John Nicolson MP to discuss Scotland's media. Scotland's media came under much scrutiny in the run-up to the first independence referendum in 2014. John Nicolson MP is SNP spokesperson for Digital, Media, Culture, and Sport. Scotland's national broadcaster in the UK is the BBC. Studies have shown they protected union representatives during the campaign and disproportionately weighted the argument in their favour. This isn't appropriate for an institution that, by definition, is supposed to be impartial. Privately, John says, the BBC apologised and admitted they got it wrong. What can we expect this time around? Do the political debates serve a purpose and are our leaders held to account as well as they should be. John would like to see the return of long-form political interviews from the likes of Paxman and Neil who, whatever their politics, ensure they interview everyone fairly and robustly. On print media, so many of our newspapers in Scotland are owned by the few. The National is the only major newspaper in Scotland to support independence when polls currently show there to be a 50/50 split in the general population. How can this be right? And what of the musicians who relied so heavily on the European touring market? In the wake of Brexit, they face extortionate visa fees, and the haulage companies crucial to the operation are in trouble too. Listen to John's take on all of this, and more, on this episode of Scotland's Choice. For more of John's work, click here. Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.

Peter Hooton is joined by Kieth Culvin, Ste Monaghan, John Nicolson and Ian Byrne for the first Allez Les Rouges podcast since Liverpool pulled off their ‘mission impossible’ to qualify for the Champions League. So just how good an achievement was it by Jurgen Klopp and his players? The panel discuss that, looking back on the key moments on the end-of-season run-in, including Alisson’s wonderful winner at West Brom, and the difference the returning fans made to the team – and in particular Sadio Mane – in the final-day win over Crystal Palace that ensured the Reds finished third. Talk then turns to transfers, including Ibrahima Konate, Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak, and whether it’s a gamble not to offer Gini Wijnaldum a new deal. There’s also a lot of praise for Thiago, before Peter and Co pick out some of their highlights of their campaign. And the must-listen podcast ends with Ian, who is the MP for Liverpool West Derby, speaking about the Spirit of Shankly supporters’ union’s meeting with Liverpool FC chief executive Billy Hogan, and the announcement of a new fans’ board.Watch and subscribe to our Blood Red videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BloodRedLiverpoolFCSign up for our Liverpool FC newsletters: https://data.reachplc.com/210734476470860Join our Blood Red podcast group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1656599847979758/

Peter Hooton is joined by fellow 'legacy fans' Kieth Culvin, Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson for this Liverpool FC must-listen. But while the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast starts with a joke, it's content is serious as the panel reflect on the sorry European Super League saga that lasted 48 hours but has left many Liverpool fans with ill-feeling towards the club's owners FSG for the part they played in the doomed breakaway competition. Peter and Co discuss how they felt at hearing the news that the Reds were turning their back on their beloved European Cup and signing up for the all-new league, the response of the football world, the subsequent apology from FSG chief John W Henry, and how Jurgen Klopp would have taken it all.
