Alex chats to John Nicolson – now a former SNP MP – reflects on what went wrong for the SNP and how to fix it, as well as a wide range of topics, from the US presidential race to behind-the-scenes insights on the life political. And there's a little regret that he and his SNP colleagues weren't a little more awkward when they descended en masse on Westminster. With candid observations on some of those with whom he has shared the political stage – and eyebrow-raising revelations about his close call on the operating table – this is a must-listen for all fans of planet politics, not just those from north of the Border. "It's a bit like bereavement, when you lose. The worst time is the morning. You wake up and you feel unhappy and you can't quite remember why, and then you go: no, that's why. It's very sad." "The truth is, people vote for parties. And there was an electoral wave, which individual candidates, such as myself, found impossible to resist." "I was very outspoken on trans rights. I'm not in favour of Scottish independence because I want to go out there and wave the Saltire. I'm not a flag fetishist. I support it because of the kind of society we can build... Scotland, on a whole number of metrics, is now amongst the most liberal countries in Europe." "My grandma left school at 12. I went to university and ended up getting a scholarship to Harvard. It transformed my life, free university education." "We've got to have a mature discussion about how Scotland leaves the UK, if we want to. If there is no mechanism to leave, and we're told we can never have a referendum, well, it's not a voluntary union." "The Tories are a funny lot. I grew up with Clause 28 and all that ghastliness. And then, when I was elected, I looked across to the Tory benches... I mean, it was like a night out in Soho." "Obviously if that was my choice, I'd vote for Biden. But if Biden wants to do something for his nation now, I think he should stand aside. I hope vanity does not prevent him." "I have no time for people who say: they're all the same, they're all liars. They really aren't. There's good people in all the parties. And there are honest, well-intentioned people in all the parties. Engage. Don't be lazy." Learn more about your ad choices. Following the chaotic scenes in Parliament on Wednesday Sonia Sodha of The Observer analyses the political week. Dr Ruth Fox of The Hansard Society explains why an opposition day debate about Gaza, and calls for a ceasefire, descended in to bitter arguments about parliamentary procedure. John Nicolson of the SNP discusses why his party thinks the Commons Speaker should resign over the issue. And, to reflect on the wider crisis, Sonia speaks to former Middle East Minister Tobias Ellwood and the Chair of the International Development Select Committee, Sarah Champion, who has just returned from a trip to the Egypt-Gaza border. On Monday the Business Secretary, Kemi Badenoch, gave a robust response to claims made by the former Chairman of the Post Office who she had previously sacked over the Horizon scandal. Sonia speaks to two MPs who were in the chamber for that statement: Conservative Conor Burns and Labour's Kevan Jones, who has campaigned for many years on behalf of wrongly convicted sub-postmasters. And, after Keir Starmer's chief of staff suggested Labour could make use of citizens' assemblies to decide on contentious issues, Sonia brings together Louise Caldwell, who took part in the Irish citizens' assembly on abortion, and Joe Twyman of Deltapoll, who has helped run such assemblies in the past.

In this episode Drew sits down with John Nicolson MP to discuss Scotland's media. Scotland's media came under much scrutiny in the run-up to the first independence referendum in 2014. John Nicolson MP is SNP spokesperson for Digital, Media, Culture, and Sport. Scotland's national broadcaster in the UK is the BBC. Studies have shown they protected union representatives during the campaign and disproportionately weighted the argument in their favour. This isn't appropriate for an institution that, by definition, is supposed to be impartial. Privately, John says, the BBC apologised and admitted they got it wrong. What can we expect this time around? Do the political debates serve a purpose and are our leaders held to account as well as they should be. John would like to see the return of long-form political interviews from the likes of Paxman and Neil who, whatever their politics, ensure they interview everyone fairly and robustly. On print media, so many of our newspapers in Scotland are owned by the few. The National is the only major newspaper in Scotland to support independence when polls currently show there to be a 50/50 split in the general population. How can this be right? And what of the musicians who relied so heavily on the European touring market? In the wake of Brexit, they face extortionate visa fees, and the haulage companies crucial to the operation are in trouble too. Listen to John's take on all of this, and more, on this episode of Scotland's Choice. For more of John's work, click here. Listen to other Scotland's Choice episodes here.

And one week before the season kicks off with the trip to Norwich City, Peter asks his guests for their hopes for the new campaign, which brings a reminder of something that Manchester City, Chelsea and their other big-spending rivals don't have.Get exclusive podcasts direct to your inbox every week for FREE by joining the Blood Red Club. The Allez Les Rouges podcast is back, with plenty of topics on the agenda for Peter Hooton and his guests, Ste Monaghan, John Nicolson and Gerard Miles, to discuss. The chat begins with a look ahead to Norwich City as Premier League action returns this weekend, before the panel discuss the Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. Up next is Philippe Coutinho, and whether a return to Liverpool is on the cards, before Peter and Co make comparisons between the great teams of the 70s and 80s, and today's current crop. And there's also talk about what can be done with the FA Cup in order to rejuvenate an increasingly outdated competition. Enjoy! For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
We’ve got something special lined-up for you – for the second-year running it’s the combined Allez Les Rouges-Poetry in Motion podcast (Allez Les Motion? Poetry in Rouges?) as our brilliant hosts Peter Hooton and Neil Fitzmaurice are joined by John Nicolson for a Christmas cracker. What’s on the agenda? Loads! The signing of Takumi Minamino, Liverpool’s quite incredible form in the calendar year, how Noel Gallagher is feeling, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, Saturday’s FIFA Club World Cup final... and that’s just the first half of the podcast! In the second half the panel wonder whether Jurgen Klopp could and should field a weaken side in the forthcoming FA Cup clash with Everton and whether, given the Reds manager’s defensive injuries, the club should break the bank for Kalidou Koulibaly. And there’s also an impassioned debate about VAR. Enjoy! For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Some perfect pre-match listening, Reds? Then we’ve got just the thing as John Nicolson, Steph Jones and Gerard Miles join Peter Hooton for the latest episode of the must-listen Allez Les Rouges podcast. Understandably, most of the focus centres on the Merseyside derby demolition, Klopp’s team selection for it, and the tactics he used to destroy Everton. Also on the agenda, before talk turns to Bournemouth and Red Bull Salzburg, is the blistering form of Sadio Mane, and the challenges posed by Leicester City and Manchester City. And there’s also an interesting debate around the FIFA Club World Cup. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Episode 12: The SNP Conference Special with John Nicolson is now live! In this episode, Michael is joined by Journalist, Broadcaster and Former SNP MP (and current Parliamentary candidate), John Nicolson, to talk about all that's happening at SNP conference, Brexit and the prospect of Scottish Independence.
Peter Hooton has a very special guest on the latest episode of the superb Allez Les Rouges podcast - Karen Gill, granddaughter of the late, great Bill Shankly, the man who laid the foundations for the modern Liverpool. They are joined by regulars, Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson, for what is a great listen for all Reds. The podcast kicks off by discussing the victory over Arsenal that took Jurgen Klopp's side clear at the top and, more importantly, even at this early stage of the campaign, kept them two points clear of Manchester City. As Peter says, it seems like this season is a continuation of lost, where neither of the top two teams in the country can afford to slip up. But the panel were not just impressed by what happened on the pitch, but off it, too, and in particular the passion, patience and loudness of the Anfield crowd, which placed in the context of when Klopp first arrived at the club, underlines just how he has turned the fanbase from 'doubters into believers'. That much is clear when talk turns to the draw for the Champions League with John insisting it would actually be better for the Reds to take on the likes of Real Madrid in the group stages. There's also a preview of Saturday's Premier League trip to Burnley, and how Sean Dyche's tactics will hold no fear for Virgil van Dijk and Co, before the last part of the show is dedicated to a forthcoming trip to Bill Shankly's home village of Glenbuck in Scotland, Karen's memory of her granddad, and what he would have made of Klopp. Enjoy. Looking ahead to the weekend’s game with Southampton, Peter reflects on how far the Reds have come under Jurgen Klopp and ponders whether it’s time to unleash Rhian Brewster. With Kieran in the studio, there’s plenty to discuss regarding the BOSS Nights, especially the atmosphere in Madrid for the Champions League Final. Enjoy! It's the Allez Les Rouges podcast with a difference! Host Peter Hooton and regular guests Ste Monaghan, Kieth Culvin, John Nicolson and Joe Blott are holidaying in Sorrento and so watched Sunday's friendly at Murrayfield alongside Napoli fans bar in a bar in south-west Italy - and it's from there where they recorded their latest show. Split into two halves, reacting to the first half and then reflecting after the second, our panel wonder whether the 3-0 defeat to the Italians is a cause for concern and whether a fired-up Napoli side is a sign of things to come. They also try to pick out the positives but struggle to see them in the performance of one Liverpool midfielder. They also state which back-up striker must starts Sunday's Community Shield clash with Manchester City even though Mohamad Salah and Roberto Firmino are back. Before the podcast ends with an interesting debate about the club's move to trademark the word 'Liverpool'. With Peter playing devil's advocate, it's asked whether the move is good business sense or it is the thin end of the wedge. Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Counting down the days until the start of the season? Or still revelling in the fact that Liverpool are champions of Europe and what was a glorious weekend of sport? Allez Les Rouges host Peter Hooton and regular guests Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson are in the latter camp and, judging by Jurgen Klopp's demeanour at the start of pre-season, the Liverpool manager is completely relaxed too. And no wonder when he has young talent ready to burst through like Rhian Brewster. Our panel discuss the 19-year-old's flying start to the summer, and how his setback last season could actually be a blessing in disguise, but also why there is a danger of being branded the next 'big thing'. Klopp has also been boosted by the return of senior players to full fitness but Peter, Ste and John argue that does not mean the Reds can afford to be letting players leave. Talk then turns to transfers and reports linking Philippe Coutinho with a move back to Anfield. When Paul Pogba is valued at £150m by Manchester United, how much would Coutinho go for? And, anyway, would he be welcomed back? But for now it is purely speculation and as things stand, it has been a quiet transfer for Liverpool and a lot of their rivals. Unlike in the sports journalist world... Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
It's nearly three weeks since that unforgettable night in Madrid and we still can't enough of talking about how Liverpool won European Cup number six. But how was it for the people who chronicled' the Reds' Champions League triumph? ECHO old boy, Neil Jones, who is now the Liverpool FC correspondent for Goal, and author and journalist Simon Hughes, who has a written a book on the Reds' resurgence, have their say in the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast, hosted as ever by Peter Hooton and also featuring regular guest John Nicolson. But even though the win over Tottenham Hotspur is still fresh in the mind, increasingly the focus is falling on transfers and just what Jurgen Klopp will do in the market this summer. It's accepted that an additional forward will have to be brought in, given that Daniel Sturridge has followed Dominic Solanke and Danny Ings through the exit door, but Simon and Neil explain why the powers that be have faith in Rhian Brewster. Also on the agenda is the difficult full-back question and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and whether Klopp needs a Philippe Coutinho replacement. The panel also discuss Harry Wilson, and why the fact that the young Wales international's position at Liverpool underlines just how far Manchester United are now behind their biggest rivals, plus pre-season, and why the Community Shield could be much more than just a glorified friendly. Our week of celebrations on the Blood Red channel continues with a must-listen Allez Les Rouges podcast. Host Peter Hooton is at full strength as he is joined by regular guests Ste Monaghan, Kieth Culvin, John Nicolson and Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman to reflect on Liverpool's magnificent Champions League final victory and much else besides. The match itself is covered in depth, including why Jurgen Klopp got it right and Mauricio Pochettino got it wrong, particularly regarding his decision to start Harry Kane. 'Selfless' Reds captain Jordan Henderson is hailed as is the fabulous atmosphere created inside and outside the ground by the inspirational travelling Kop. But there is also talk of the future, and what needs to happen next. John is keen to make more statement signings in the vein of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, with the big Red urging Klopp to for one of the players on the beaten side in Madrid. But the panel are also keen for the powers that be to use some of the huge funds generated by the run to the final to give the younger generation of supporters. who have done so much to improve the atmosphere outside the ground, around Liverpool and across the world, the chance to do what they do but inside Anfield. With the Champions League final just one week away, and what with it being May 25th, the date on which Liverpool won their first and fifth European Cups, your latest Allez Les Rouges podcast is a Euro special. Host Peter Hooton is joined by regulars, and veterans of many a successful European campaign, Ste Monaghan, John Nicolson and Kieth Culvin. But, before they preview the club's ninth European Cup final, they look back at some of their best memories of following the Reds around the continent, including their first final, their best opposition teams and players, and the best atmosphere. Talk then shifts to the massive match with Tottenham Hotspur, the three-week gap since the Premier League finale, Jurgen Klopp's midfield line-up, superstitions, as well as a heated debate on UEFA and their decision to allocate the Reds and Spurs just 16,000 tickets each - a significant number of which haven't gone to supporters who really should be in the Wanda Metropolitano. Every week feels big for table-topping Liverpool at the moment, but this week, perhaps more than any other in this unforgettable season, could be the biggest yet. However, that has less to do with the visit of already-relegated Huddersfield Town to Anfield, and more about second-placed Manchester City’s game in hand at – of all places – Manchester United. Little wonder, then, that the latest episode of the brilliant Allez Les Rouges podcast shines the spotlight on the crucial Old Trafford encounter. But only after host Peter Hooton and regular guests Kieth Culvin, Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson look back on Liverpool’s wins at home and abroad since their last podcast, and what impressed them the most. The quartet also debate the double-standards over Mohamed Salah before you hear Peter’s interview with journalist and Manchester United supporter Andy Mitten. Andy, who has been the editor of the United We Stand fanzine since 1989, talks Wednesday’s massive derby match, what it will mean if United help hand Liverpool the title, and the rivalry and similarities between the two most successful clubs in English football. Andy, who spends a lot of his time in Barcelona, also explains why fans of the Spanish champions are fearful of Liverpool, as well as giving an interesting story about Jurgen Klopp. Peter, Kieth, Ste and John then discuss what’s just been said, give their own take on United v City, including why Everton could have gone and done their Merseyside neighbours a favour, before previewing Huddersfield and Barcelona. The Allez Les Rouges boys are back in Blighty after recording their last brilliant podcast in Munich with host Peter Hooton joined by Ste Monaghan, John Nicolson and Dan Kay at the ECHO's recording studio. The show kicks off with a quick debrief of the dreaded international break, which mainly consisted of the lads praying for the well-being of the Liverpool players in action for their countries, before talk turns to this weekend's fixtures, which start Manchester City's trip to Fulham on Saturday and end with the Reds' visit of Tottenham to Anfield the following afternoon. On paper, it looks like Jurgen Klopp's side have the harder match, but the panel offer opinions to the contrary, which is backed up by a very encouraging stat from Peter. Mohamed Salah will go into the Spurs game on the back of a barren goalscoring run but there are no such fears over the striker's form here. And neither are there over the possibility of it being a trophyless season. That said, John in particular, has concerns over the referee on Sunday. There's also debate on the midfield line-up, which players will make the biggest impact off the bench, the Champions League quarter-final draw, and an explanation as to why if Liverpool are to drop points between now and the end of the campaign, it cannot be in the next three matches. And another must-listen pod rounds off with a tribute to a Reds fan taken far too young. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
With Jurgen Klopp’s boys away in Spain, and no game for another five days, this is very much the calm before the storm. But the visit of Bayern Munich kicks start a run in both the Premier League and the Champions League that could go a long way to deciding Liverpool’s destiny. And it’s against that backdrop that the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast is recorded.Host Peter Hooton is joined by regular guests Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson as well as the ECHO’s Dan Kay, and they start by discussing the passing of two Bill Shankly favourites, Ian Ross and Gordon Banks.Talk then turns to the present day and what were the most impressive aspects of last weekend’s win over Bournemouth and why it was so different, both on and off the pitch, to the previous home fixture with Leicester.Sadio Mane scored his fourth goal in as many matches on Saturday to underline his status as the Reds’ main man at the moment. But has the Senegalese been that for some time now? What is without question is the improvement shown by Naby Keita in recent weeks and the panel discuss what the midfielder needs to do next to go to the next level. The debate then switches to the games coming up fast on the horizon, starting with Bayern and followed by the trip to Manchester United, whose fans could well be in the two minds over the outcome of the massive Old Trafford match. The midfield line-up for those clashes, and then the ones with Watford and Everton, are discussed, as is the impending return of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, before another must-listen podcast ends on a suitably upbeat note with news of Jamie Carragher’s brilliant act of generosity. The Allez Les Rouges podcast is back, and after their winter break, regular guests Ste Monaghan, Kieth Culvin and John Nicolson join host Peter Hooton to reflect on a squandered opportunity for Liverpool.Or should that be a step closer to the club’s first title since 1990?That’s the talking point that kicks off the latest episode as the panel discuss the 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Wednesday night. There was no doubting it was one of Liverpool’s poorest performances of an incredible season so far, but could you not see it coming given the way they played in their previous match versus Crystal Palace?Peter and Co ask that question while also wondering whether the national focus on Mohamed Salah in recent weeks is giving the officials pre-conceived notions about the Reds’ top-scorer and his team-mates. As off-colour as Jurgen Klopp’s side were against Leicester, there is no question they were on the end of some bad decisions. But were Liverpool helped by their own crowd in midweek? The lads don’t think they were and explain why. They also wonder about the true strength of Klopp’s squad now that the injuries have started to pile up, and long for the return of one player in particular, before they turn their focus to Monday’s match at West Ham United. What a time it is to be a Liverpool fan.A record start to a league season, six points clear at the top, and with the little matter of a trip to the defending champions Manchester City to come on Thursday night.Little wonder, then, that there is an air of excitement around the first Allez Les Rouges podcast of the New Year.Host Peter Hooton is joined by regulars Stephen Monaghan and John Nicolson, as well as Ian Byrne, fellow Red, local councillor, and founder of Fans Supporting Foodbanks, the partnership between Spirit of Shankly and Everton Supporters’ Trust that is doing vital and brilliant work in the community. After the 5-1 demolition of Arsenal made it nine wins on the spin for Jurgen Klopp’s relentless side, the panel question whether anyone saw this coming, and whether it’s best to keep your feet on the ground, enjoy the ride... or both! What they definitely do agree on is that Klopp is playing it perfectly, off the pitch as well as on it, where the belief he has instilled now means his players should be able to meet any challenge that comes their way.A big challenge soon awaits the Reds at the Etihad. But, with City trailing seven points behind, the lads reckon it is Pep Guardiola who is facing the biggest conundrum. The midfield section for the big clash is discussed as is the use of dark arts in matches of the magnitude of Thursday’s. Talk then turns to three thought-provoking articles that have been published recently, the first about the impact of Virgil van Dijk, and the latter two about Fans Supporting Foodbanks and the ‘Feed the Scousers’ chants aimed at Liverpool and Everton supporters by rival fans. And another must-listen podcast ends with a warm tribute to late Reds legend Peter Thompson before the panel look back on 2018 and offer their hopes and dreams for 2019.Without giving the game away, a victory over City would go a long way to making them a reality. It's coming up to two weeks since the Redmen were last in action, but the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast, hosted by Peter Hooton, and featuring regular guests Kieth Culvin, Ste 'Mono' Monaghan and John Nicolson, has a lot to get off its chest. It starts on a positive - and the amazing efforts of Reds supporters and the LFC Foundation in raising £60,000 for Sean Cox, the fan who was left in a critical condition after being attacked outside Anfield before the Champions League semi-final first leg with Roma in April.'Mono', Kieth and the Spirit of Shankly supporters' group welcomed Sean's brothers, Martin and Peter, to a special ceremony at Liverpool Town Hall on Saturday, and we hear from them on the podcast. It is an inspirational story of supporter solidarity.Sadly, the feelings of fans were not taken into consideration when the Premier League took the universally unpopular decision to hand a £5m golden handshake to outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore. The lads believe the league, and its member 20 clubs, including Liverpool, have scored a massive 'own goal', and wonder what the fallout will be in the future, especially if there is a rise in ticket prices. They also discuss the impending introduction of VAR to the Premier League before talk turns to two Reds players who have been starring for their respective countries over the international break.Liverpool are back in action this weekend, at Watford, and looking at the fixtures, the panel have the feeling this could be a pivotal weekend in a title race in which the margins for error are smaller than ever. Crisis? What crisis? As bad as the defeat to Red Star was, Liverpool’s Champions League destiny remains in their own hands, and victory on Sunday over Fulham would move them back to the top of the Premier League table. But as Jurgen Klopp admitted himself in midweek, his side are struggling to find their mojo, and it’s against that backdrop that the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast is recorded.Host Peter Hooton is joined by Stephen Monaghan, who was at the Marakana, and by John Nicolson. They start by dissecting the Red Star reverse and questioning Jurgen Klopp’s decision to rotate his squad – particularly in defence. The lads reckon the changes explain why even the imperious Virgil van Dijk fell below his usual sky-high standards on what truly was a night to forget.Liverpool will look to bounce back on Sunday when basement boys Fulham visit Anfield and Peter and Co believe Klopp’s side need to take a leaf out of leaders Manchester City’s book.Victory over the Cottagers would help quell the ‘Twitter meltdown’ and set the Reds up for massive matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli. But even if they come through their current patchy spell, the question of whether Klopp should look to buy in January is asked. And another must-listen podcast ends on an upbeat note with an update on the brilliant fundraising efforts for injured Liverpool fan Sean Cox. It's another bumper edition of Allez Les Rouges, with Liverpool season ticket holder and The Farm frontman Peter Hooton in his regular hosting seat.Joining him on this episode are Kop stalwarts Keith Culven and John Nicolson, as well as Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman. The team look back at the Red Star Belgrade victory and contemplate what constitutes the Reds' best back line - with a difference of opinion between them. The clashes with Cardiff and Arsenal are also assessed, while there is also a must-listen story about this weekend's referee Stuart Atwell and Roy Hodgson. A superb listen, as always. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Peter Hooton returns with the Allez Les Rouges podcast and so do three of his regular guests, Ste Monaghan, Kieth Culvin and John Nicolson, to look back on the final two matches of a testing and stamina-sapping run of seven games in 23 days for LiverpoolThe quartet start by examining the Champions League encounter with Napoli, and explain why there were elements of the trip, like the match itself, that were a disappointment, before talk turns to Sunday’s top-of-the-table Premier League stalemate with Manchester CityThe game has been described as an ‘anti-climax’ in some quarters but the lads disagree and Peter reasons why it showed just how far the Reds have come in the last year.Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bench Trent-Alexander Arnold is debated, and while there is an acceptance that the right-back dipped below his high standards four nights earlier in Naples, the panel wonder whether it was the wrong match for him to be rested.Rest is what James Milner is going to get after coming off injured against City and Peter and Co talk about who should replace the key man. New boys Fabinho or Naby Keita? Xherdan Shaqiri? Or a player who was once key to Klopp’s style of football? The fixtures after the international break are then pored over, including a first Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade since 1973, a game which that proved pivotal for Bill Shankly and for the club.Kevin Keegan told the ECHO recently that the current Reds boss was cut from the same cloth as Shankly. The lads discuss the comparisons and also spell out what could be Klopp’s greatest achievement of his three-year reign. The first part of the show then ends before Peter and Ste are joined by Joe Blott, a Spirit of Shankly committee member, to talk about World Mental Health Day, the role the supporters’ group are playing with Liverpool Mental Heath Consortium and the club, and the new documentary, Jason McAteer: Through the Storm. With Peter Hooton sunning himself in Sicily ahead of the launch of his brilliant new book, the latest episode of the Allez Les Rouges podcast is hosted by a voice that will be very familiar to our listeners. The Liverpool ECHO’s former Liverpool FC editor Andy Kelly made a warm welcome to our studio to record the show, which also features journalist and author, Simon Hughes, Spirit of Shankly committee member Joe Blott, and regular guest and Kop season ticket holder, John Nicolson. And it’s safe to say the lads have a lot to talk about ahead of a run of seven games in 22 days that Andy rightly calls ‘mouthwatering’.Liverpool will go into the first of those games, against Tottenham Hotspur, on the back of four straight wins to start a league season for the first time since 1990.But the panel are of the opinion that Jurgen Klopp’s side have yet to truly get going and they look at the reasons why that is the case. There is no need for alarm – every other club would like to be where the Reds are – but Andy and Co accept the performances must move up a level, starting at Wembley on Saturday. And they believe that is exactly what will happen given the nature of the opposition that lie in wait including and after the showdown with Spurs.Selection for the clash against Mauricio Pochettino’s men is discussed – including the case for a first start for Fabinho – before talk turns to the Champions League and Tuesday’s visit of Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield. The potential ‘banana skin’ in the hectic run of matches is also discussed before the podcast ends with a chat about Liverpool’s new additions to the coaching staff and Peter’s new book, The Boot Room Boys: The Unseen Story of Anfield’s Conquering Heroes. Liverpool’s Champions League group stage opponents are the big talking points in the latest edition of the unmissable Allez Les Rouges podcast.Recorded straight after the Reds discovered they will go head to head with Paris St Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade in Group C, host Peter Hooton and regular guests – and Kop season ticket holders – Kieth Culvin, John Nicolson and Ste Monaghan cast their eyes over the teams standing in the Reds’ way of progressing to the knock-out stages. There is no question that last season’s losing finalists could have been handed an easier draw but the lads explain why they are thrilled by it – and in particular the chance to lock horns with Red Star – and, like Jurgen Klopp, they are quick to remind everyone that no team will want to face Liverpool either.Peter believes this season represents a great opportunity to win the Premier League and wonders whether Reds boss Klopp should prioritise that over a tilt for a sixth European Cup.But, while all and present agree Liverpool now have the squad to compete on more than one front, they reckon there is one player that Klopp cannot even begin to contemplate rotating – not even in the Carabao Cup.Speaking of the Carabao Cup, Peter and Co also react to the third-round draw for the competition, which took place while the podcast was being recorded, as well as looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to Leicester City, where the Reds will look to maintain top spot and their 100% winning start to the season.Talk then turns to our own James Pearce’s exclusive two-part chat with Liverpool’s managing director Billy Hogan, which in turn leads to a debate over the club’s off-the-field performance and owners FSG. Like the rest of the podcast, it gets lively.Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Peter Hooton is back with his excellent Allez Les Rouges podcast – and he’s invited a special guest along for the latest instalment.Alongside regulars Kieth Culvin, John Nicolson and Ste Monaghan is Accrington Stanley manager – and big Red – John Coleman. The lads were impressed with the way Liverpool started the season as West Ham United were put to the sword at Anfield – in particular debutant Naby Keita and the attacking options that were able to come off the bench. That said they were less heartened with the cover at the back and, while they believe Alisson could go on to become one of the club’s best ever goalkeepers, they do question whether Jurgen Klopp should have brought in another defender before the transfer window closed, and what his best centre-back partnership is.Reds boss Klopp is certainly not short of quality in midfield after the summer arrivals of Keita and Fabinho but James Milner proved on Sunday why he remains such a vital performer – and Coleman gives a fascinating insight into what the former England man is like up close.Coleman – who performed miracles to get Stanley promoted to League One last season – then offers his ‘controversial’ opinion on Roberto Firmino before talks turn to whether Klopp must deliver in what is his third full season in charge at Anfield. They key to winning the title is then discussed – including factors both on and off the field – before another must-listen podcast rounds off with the news surrounding Mo Salah this week.Enjoy. In the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast, our host Peter Hooton is joined by regular John Nicolson... and two very special guests.Danny Nicolson, of the BOSS night, and Jamie Webster, whose brilliant version of Allez Allez Allez was the soundtrack to the run to the Champions League final, are fresh back from Liverpool’s tour of America. And the duo tell Peter what it was like to go behind the curtain and why supporters should be encouraged that the club is not just getting things right on the field. The quartet also discuss the feelgood factor around the Reds, the revival of Daniel Sturridge, and whether Jurgen Klopp is under pressure to deliver his first trophy since arriving at Anfield.Talk also turns to Liverpool’s final friendlies and the Premier League opener at home to West Ham on Sunday week.Enjoy. The signing of Alisson for a world record fee for a goalkeeper dominates the latest episode of the brilliant Allez Les Rouges podcast.Host Peter Hooton and his guests, Steph Jones, Ste Monaghan and John Nicolson, are all delighted that the Brazilian has been brought in.But, as well as discussing what kind of keeper the Reds are getting, they look at the wider context of Alisson’s arrival, and ask what it says about Jurgen Klopp, FSG’s policy, and the balance of power in the Premier League. Not that they are completely satisfied, though.Yes, as well as being pleased by the arrivals of Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, who they reckon could bring the bit of nark the Reds have been missing, Peter and Co still want Klopp to make at least one more signing in one area in particular. If that happens, though, that may lead to the departure of a player who has returned to pre-season looking as sharp as he has in years. But, the question they ask is, can Klopp trust him?The World Cup also gets a mention – as well as THOSE Dejan Lovren comments. It’s another great listen. World Cup talk dominates the latest episode of the brilliant Allez Les Rouges podcast.Host Peter Hooton and regulars Kieth Culvin and John Nicolson discuss the Liverpool players currently representing their countries in Russia including Dejan Lovren, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah. The lads hope Salah will be rested for the final group game – and debate the lengths leaders and figures will go to use sport for political gain after Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov made a beeline for the Reds hero at Egypt’s questionable choice of training base.Peter, Kieth and John were impressed by England in their opening match – and, unlike Martin Keown, particularly the performance produced by Jordan Henderson. That leads on to a fascinating and lengthy discussion about Liverpool supporters’ relationship with the national team.VAR, Emre Can, Jon Flanagan and Nail Fekir all get a mention before the focus turns to the Reds’ search for a goalkeeper – with a new target, who is in World Cup action, thrown into the mix. It’s another superb listen. In the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast, our host Peter Hooton is joined by regulars Kieth Culvin and John Nicolson, as well as fellow season ticket holder, Joe Blott. The lads reflect on the trip to Rome – both the bad and the very, very good – and how Chelsea’s Stoke-style performance paid the tired and injury-hit Reds the ultimate compliment. They also preview Sunday’s final game of the league season at home to Brighton and question whether Mo Salah’s minor dip in form is anything to do with a hidden injury or the Ian Rush record he continues to chase. Also up for discussion is the improved atmosphere at Anfield, the ‘Moan Stand’, and how Jurgen Klopp reads the crowd so well – as are John Henry’s rare public comments and the old net spend debate. And another brilliant podcast rounds off with how Reds fans are getting ripped off even before they've landed in Kiev for the Champions League final.Enjoy!
