Pleasure to be joined by Andrew Simpson of The Ibrox Channel Podcast to look back on the period of 2003-06 when after Alex McLeish led his Rangers side to a domestic treble, the side was broken up which led to a disastrous season. Also we look at the remarkable season of 2004-05 which saw the most remarkable title win in the club's history and the season after with despite Alex McLeish being the first manager to lead Rangers to the last-16 of the Champions League, domestic form was woeful which eventually led to the end of McLeish's time as manager. Welcome to our Big Interview Icons series where we shine a light on a legend whose name has lit up some of the conversations I've had with my guests over the years. This episode focuses on Andres Iniesta.Gordon Strachan waxes lyrical about watching Iniesta and says that he would never have believed that the standard of football the great Barcelona side he played in was possible.David Moyes reflects on a clash between Real Sociedad and that Barca side. David's team won, but boy, could they not get near Andres.Someone else who knew how hard it was to dispossess Iniesta is former Swansea, Brighton and Blackpool winger Andrea Orlandi, who played alongside and against him while at Barcelona B. Andrea envied Andres his speed – he was quicker than people realise, with incredible acceleration; and he never gave the ball away. Finally, we hear how Alex McLeish nearly signed a young Iniesta on loan when manager of Rangers. The bid caused a real fuss at Barcelona, forcing their hand about whether to loan out or start playing the blossoming midfield genius. Sadly for Rangers fans, Barca chose the latter. Today's story comes from Alex McLeish and it's taken from an interview we recorded in front of a live audience in Glasgow. He's talking recruitment – making the most of a player his bosses at Birmingham wanted more than he did; and almost landing Andres Iniesta for Rangers. In this episode, John B and Ross are joined by Rangers fan and author Alistair Aird. The timing of Alistair's appearance is somewhat unfortunate given the recent defeat by Celtic, but he and Ross don't avoid the discussion and dissect on what went wrong for their team that night, but why they believe the title race is very much on. Alistair then discusses his love of Rangers and how it began by looking at a programme of a League Cup Semi Final against Dundee United in 1986/87 that had Davie Cooper on the front cover. He attended his first game in 1988 at the age of eight, so naturally the nine-in-a-row years is his favourite era. He also fondly recalls last-day title wins over Aberdeen and the Alex McLeish title victories of 2003 and 2005, plus the memorable run to the UEFA Cup Final. We then move onto Alistair's love of writing and how he's combined this and his love for Rangers by releasing a series of books on individuals and era's of the club, including the autobiographies for Davie Wilson, David Robertson and Mark Hateley. There are also some very good tips for any aspiring writers in what makes a good book, with trust being the key ingredient, something John and Ross found useful for their upcoming titles. The podcast rounds off with slow fire questions including Alistair's best Rangers XI. Welcome to our Big Interview Icons series where we shine a light on a legend whose name has lit up some of the conversations I've had with my guests over the last six years of The Big Interview. This episode focuses on Sir Alex Ferguson.Rio Ferdinand once vented his rage at Sir Alex and was fortunate not to be sold. But he never doubted his genius. Yet there was a flaw to that genius, exposed when he left Manchester United too open in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League final defeats to Barcelona. Rio found the latter defeat particularly embarrassing.Terry Gibson tells us about how Sir Alex's arrival at Manchester United was the new broom Old Trafford needed after the lax regime of Ron Atkinson. Terry's face didn't fit, but luckily Wimbledon came calling.Alex McLeish relates how his former Aberdeen boss tried to poach him for Manchester United, while Darren Fletcher provides an amazing insight into a Fergie team talk. He could be unpredictable, but ultimately exuded a calmness which affected his players and filled them with belief.Lastly, fellow manager Gianluca Vialli speaks of what an inspiration Sir Alex was, and shares with us two golden nuggets of advice he always remembered.EnjoyGraeme See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The two John's are back together this week and they welcome a man who they used to cheer on from their Aberdeen days in right back Stephen Wright, who also played for Rangers, Bradford City and Dundee United and won two Scotland caps. Stephen begins by discussing his current role at Dundee Football Club as Head of Academy, overseeing the clubs youth development programme. He discusses the current challenges faced by the Coronavirus pandemic and potential cuts caused by no fans at Dens Park. We move onto Stephen's playing career, which began at Aberdeen having signed an S-Form. He talks about the influence of senior players such as Willie Miller, Alex McLeish, Stewart McKimmie and Robert Connor when he was learning his trade and breaking into the first team. He very nearly became a league winner in his debut season on 1990/91 before a last day defeat at Ibrox handed the title to Rangers. Wright went onto play more than 150 games for the Dons, playing in two more cup finals and helped the Dons escape relegation in 1994/95 in his last act for the club before moving to boyhood team Rangers. His time at Ibrox was marred by suffering a career threatening injury against Juventus. He talks openly about the struggles of overcoming that injury, which relapsed nearly a year later, and how that his Rangers career was over before it got started as a result. A move to Bradford brought some happier times as the Bantams won promotion to the Premier League in 1999. Stephen wound down his career at Dundee United and Scunthorpe before retiring at 31. We round off with the usual slow fire questions including Stephen's best eleven.
