A popular Hamilton bar has banned drinkers under the age of 20 on Saturday nights following thousands of dollars of damage that's being blamed on younger patrons. "House on Hood" lowered the entry age to 18 last year but decided to reverse the decision saying the bad behaviour of some teens is also costing them older customers. John Lawrenson spoke to Lisa Owen.
A Hamilton bar is cutting off patrons under 20. House on Hood announced last month it would return to being a "20+ bar" on Saturdays after 10pm. It had dealt with five figure damages after lowering the age limit to 18+ for a year. Owner John Lawrenson told Mike Hosking there's a notable difference in the way 18 year olds drink, versus those over the age of 20. He says that when someone's 18, they're still learning their limits and what is acceptable behaviour, and older demographics don't necessarily want to be around people discovering alcohol for the first time. In some areas of health and social care, the evidence from individual randomised trials answering questions about single interventions makes it difficult to choose between the interventions. Network meta-analyses can help with this by bringing all the evidence together in one place and, in February 2023, Cochrane Eyes and Vision published one such review, looking at the control of myopia in children. Here's lead author, John Lawrenson from City University of London in the UK, to tell us more.

About 900 people were at one of the central Auckland bars on Friday night, visited by someone who has tested positive for Covid-19. Bar 101 on Elliot Street bills itself online as Auckland's premiere student nightclub. John Lawrenson is the chief executive of the Lawrenson Group, which owns Bar 101 and a host of other hospitality venues in Auckland and Hamilton. He told reporter Sarah Robson he found out the bar was a location of interest when he read about it in the media.
