In this episode of New Retina Radio Journal Club with VBS, moderator Lediana Goduni, MD, is joined by Alexis Warren, MD, and Joshua Uhr, MD, to discuss a new retrospective cohort study by Rahimy et al. The panel explores how obstructive sleep apnea impacts the progression of diabetic retinopathy and elevates the risk for systemic vascular events such as stroke, heart attack, and death. With nearly 24,000 patients analyzed, the study sheds light on the importance of screening and managing comorbidities in patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy—and raises critical questions about what role retina specialists should play in addressing them.

In this episode I share my jet-lagged reflections after speaking at the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative Symposium. As an ambassador for the initiative, I discuss the fight against diabetic retinopathy, the most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetes, and the ongoing advancements in diagnostics and treatments. I also address your questions, including the challenges of astigmatism, the discomfort of modern headlights, and long-term effects of nystagmus.  Takeaways: Diabetic Retinopathy Is a Leading Cause of Vision Loss: Dr. Flannery explains how diabetes damages the small blood vessels in the retina, leading to blindness if untreated, and highlights the importance of early detection. Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative: This nonprofit is advancing research and treatment options for diabetic retinopathy, focusing on reducing the devastating impact of this disease. Astigmatism and Night Driving: Dr. Flannery discusses the challenges astigmatism poses, especially with modern LED headlights, and highlights solutions like glasses, contact lenses, and specialized intraocular lenses. Nystagmus and Eye Movement: He explains why people with congenital nystagmus often don't perceive the motion of their eyes and debunks concerns about long-term damage from constant eye movement. The Power of Advocacy: Through his work with the Mary Tyler Moore initiative and engaging with fans, Dr. Flannery emphasizes the importance of education and community in addressing preventable vision loss. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! While optometry school was a last-minute decision for her, Dr. Julie Rodman knows it was the best decision she ever made. During her residency at the VA, she discovered her passion for working with students and watching them grow. Today, as a professor at Nova Southeastern University, she teaches the retina course and serves as the Chief of the Broward Eye Care Institute, exposing her students to a wide variety of pathologies in the real world. She also spent several years as the residency education coordinator and now runs a resident case report contest for the Optometric Retina Society. Her early introduction to OCT supercharged her passion for retina, so much so that she wrote a book about OCT-Angiography in 2019. Currently, she is working on two studies focused on geographic atrophy and diabetic retinopathy. Key Moments:1:37 Dr. Julie Rodman's path to optometry3:38 From residency to academia4:57 Teaching retina and running the clinic6:55 The ‘sexiness' of retina9:30 Dr. Rodman's research in retina11:05 Why she loves optometry13:59 A shout out to the power of OCT-A18:38 The role of optometry21:52 Residency programs25:28 Dr. Allen's learnings from his own residency30:10 Dr. Rodman's two current studies in geographic atrophy and diabetic retinopathy Eye Give a Damn hosted by Dr. Joseph Allen is produced by FluoreSCENE Media. For more information on Dr. Joseph Allen visit https://doctoreyehealth.com/Visit https://odcommunity.com/ to learn more about FluoreSCENE Media.
