Tagesthemen-Moderator Ingo Zamperoni und seine amerikanische Frau Jiffer Bourguignon hat die Energie beeindruckt, die er auf die Bühne bringt: „Die Demokraten sind immer dann erfolgreich, wenn sie jemanden haben, der sie wirklich inspirieren kann.“ So erklärt Jiffer die neue Hoffnung im Lager der Demokraten. Auch in New Jersey und in Virginia gewannen die Kandidatinnen der Demokratischen Partei die Gouverneurswahlen. Allerdings mit pragmatischen Kandidatinnen der Mitte. Ändert sich gerade der Wind in der amerikanischen Innenpolitik? Was lässt sich aus den jüngsten Wahlergebnissen herauslesen? Die Demokraten müssten jedenfalls jemanden finden, der sich gegen das Establishment positioniert, sagt die USA-Korrespondentin Kerstin Klein im Podcast. Ein Jahr nach der Wahl von Donald Trump bleibt das Land weiter gespalten, die Lebensentwürfe der Menschen sind häufig sehr verschieden, obwohl die Leidenschaft dieselbe ist. What is an eco-civilisation? What are its values and what are the frames within which it works? Why do we need it in the first place and what will the Establishment do to maintain business as usual? Most importantly, what can each of us do to live an eco-civilisation into being?This week's guest, Jeremy Lent, explores these ideas in depth in his forthcoming book, Ecocivlization: Making a World that Works, which is due out in May of 2026.  We've talked to Jeremy twice before, first in episode #38 about his award-winning book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning, and then in #102 about his second book in the series, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe. Ecocivlisation is the third book in this trifecta and I was privileged to read the pre-proof draft, so I can tell you that it's one of the few genuinely Thrutopian books I've read. It that lays out the iniquities and downright horror of the imperial/colonial system of the Trauma culture - termed Wendigo Inc. in the book - and then brings Jeremy's trademark meticulous research and fluent prose to bear on the ways through to a system in which we all live and thrive and work towards the wellbeing of the entire ecosphere.   Given that there is such detail, I wanted to talk to Jeremy now, so that we could explore some of the foundations - the nature of the existing narratives of Business as Usual, of TINA: There is No Alternative  - and why this is so ubiquitous in spite of being self-evidently untrue.  Then I wanted to look at the broader frame of the Theory of Change proposed here so that next spring we can go into more detail ahead of the book's publication. For those of you who don't yet know him, Jeremy was born in London, has a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and was a former internet company CEO. Charlie Kirk understood that young people, by their very nature, are rebellious. He wanted to take their natural skepticism and point it toward the establishment, which, today, is composed of the corporate media, higher ed, and baby boomers who never got over the 1960s and '70s. “So what was the secret to his success? I think what he did was quite brilliant. He understood that young people are, by nature, rebellious. They always, as—you're full of energy. They're full of hormones. They're full of ideas. They haven't lived a long time. And they question authority. That's innate to all of us at that age. “But what he was trying to tell them was: Use that natural inquisitiveness, skepticism, maybe even rebelliousness, at the establishment. But you're mistaken. The establishment is not conservative. “The establishment, as defined by the network news, PBS, NPR; as defined by higher education, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Berkeley, Stanford; as defined by the corporate boardroom at Budweiser or Target, or Disney; as defined by the popular culture, if you look—I could just direct you to the halftime show at the typical Super Bowl extravaganza.
