Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Legal correspondent Jeremy Sharon joins host Gabriella Jacobs for today's episode. We begin by reviewing Friday morning's gunfight in the northern West Bank village of Tell. A far-right hiking group of Israelis allegedly raided the town and a gunfight broke out between the Palestinian residents and Israeli hikers. Benayahu Mellet, a 32-year-old member of the neighboring Havat Gilad settlement’s civil security squad, was fatally shot by a Palestinian, along with Maj. Yuval Ezra, an IDF officer who had been dispatched to the scene. Four Palestinians were killed during the clash. Jeremy Sharon walks us through the parties involved in the fight and gives an overview of the different narratives surrounding why the group of settlers was in the area. How was the conflict initiated? From there we move on to discuss broader patterns in the West Bank since October 7, 2023. These include the rapid expansion of settlements in the area, and markedly higher rates of tensions and violence between Israeli and Palestinian residents. Following the break, we hone in on how Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has taken steps to entrench the powerful Settlements Administration agency he established in 2023. Sharon explains how these changes will help to continue expanding the settlement enterprise, and how they will make it more difficult for a new government to undo those gains. We hear about a variety of other ways the current administration has financed and supported the expansion of the settler movement. If you want to cut through the noise and BS head to www.colossusfitness.comThese draw from ongoing social media debates (TikTok, Instagram, X), emerging trends like body recomposition, GLP-1 drugs (e.g., semaglutide), wearable tech, and "optimized" protocols. They avoid super outdated ones like "carbs at night make you fat" or the classic "anabolic window" (though timing still gets twisted).Myth 1- You Can't Build Muscle in a Calorie Deficit (Especially If You Have Body Fat to Lose) Body recomposition is very possible for beginners/intermediates with decent body fat, good protein intake, and progressive training. Myth 2- Cardio Kills Your Gains / You Must Choose Between Muscle and Fat Loss Excessive cardio + poor recovery is the real issue, not cardio itself.Myth 3- High Protein Harms Your Kidneys (or You Can Only Absorb ~30g Per Meal) For healthy people, higher protein supports muscle and satiety safely. The 30g rule is overstated, your body handles more, especially spread out. Kidneys concern mainly applies to those with pre-existing issues.Myth 4- Spot Reduction Works (or Targeted Ab Work Burns Belly Fat) Fat loss is systemic; you can strengthen muscles but not selectively melt fat from one area.Myth 5- Sweating More & Soreness is the key to progressSweat is mainly thermoregulation; it doesn't correlate strongly with calories burned or workout effectiveness. Intensity, progressive overload, and consistency matter more.Myth 6- Creatine Causes Hair Loss / Bloating / Other Major Side Effects Still scares people away despite strong evidence for safety and benefits (strength, muscle, cognitive). Hair loss myth ties to DHT correlation (weak), and bloating is usually temporary/minimal with proper dosing. Huge in 2025-2026 supplement discussions.Myth 7- You Need to Train 5-6+ Days a Week (or Go All-In on Intensity Every Session) for Real Results Many busy people get great results with 3-4 well-designed sessions + walking/recovery. Overtraining or burnout myths keep people inconsistent. Thanks for listening! The wreckage from one of the most significant plane crashes in history has been found 2 thousand feet down, on the ocean floor. A PanAm plane headed from San Juan to New York City, crash landed in the Atlantic Ocean back in 1952. Incredibly, everyone survived the initial impact, but unfortunately, panic and confusion led to 52 people drowning. The 17 survivors recounted how most passengers ignored the captain’s orders to deplane, staying buckled in their seats as the plane sank in just 3 minutes. The tragedy led to major changes that we see on every flight around the world today. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Algerian government has said that six people have died in wildfires in several provinces in recent days, as a deadly heatwave ravages the country. Officials have also instructed provincial governors to carry out comprehensive assessments of the damage to help guide future compensation for affected communities. The fires come as several Mediterranean countries, including France and Italy, are struggling with severe wildfires driven by extreme summer temperatures. Since the beginning of July, civil defence teams have responded to nearly 1,500 wildfires nationwide, more than double the number reported during the previous year. Join Dave Neal for the latest breaking news, analysis, and context on the stories everyone will be talking about.
Kate Adie introduces stories on Bangladesh's deadly measles outbreak, France's military flex on Bastille Day, Albania's 'flamingo revolution', Ecuador's bird-watching boom, and remembering BBC Rome correspondent David Willey. Bangladesh is experiencing a severe measles outbreak, with around 700 people dying of confirmed and suspected cases since March - most of them children. BBC South Asia Correspondent Azadeh Moshiri reports from a hospital, north of the capital Dhaka. France celebrated Bastille Day this week, which marks the beginning of the French revolution. This was the last parade under President Emmanuel Macron, who steps down from office next year – but he made sure to make his mark, showcasing French military power and celebrating unity with its allies. James Waterhouse reports from Paris. In Albania, the pink flamingo has become an unlikely symbol of protest, reflecting environmental concerns over a proposed tourism development that triggered recent protests. But as Guy De Launey discovered, unhappiness among voters runs much deeper. Ecuador is one of the best places to watch birds anywhere in the world, boasting some 1600 species – twice as many as the whole of Europe. Unsurprisingly, birding tourism is thriving. Stephen Moss has been ticking off some rare spots. And veteran BBC correspondent, David Willey, died last weekend at the age of 93. Across a career spanning decades, he reported from around the world - covering communist China, the Vietnam war, and Libya during in Gaddafi era. His former producer, Joanne Cayford, remembers her time working with him during his long-standing role as BBC Rome correspondent. Today's Headlines: ICE has halted most traffic stop arrests nationwide after killing two people in one week who weren't even their targets — and before that pause could even be properly announced, a third ICE-related death occurred in Florida when a man fleeing an early morning gas station stop was hit by a tractor-trailer, bringing the week's total to three. Elon Musk has been referred for potential criminal prosecution in Wisconsin after a bipartisan election board found probable cause he violated the state's bribery law by handing $1 million checks to voters during last year's Supreme Court race — his guy lost by ten points anyway, so the bribery was both illegal and ineffective. The Supreme Court is requesting $15 million in additional security funding after threats against justices jumped 25% last year and are expected to jump another 40% this year. On the Epstein Files beat, Todd Blanche's Senate confirmation hearing to become the real attorney general is today, right as New Mexico's attorney general accused him of obstructing the state's investigation into Epstein's Zorro Ranch — where documents allege Epstein had two women buried — so the timing is immaculate. On Iran, Trump dropped the Strait of Hormuz toll idea and went back to threatening Iranian civilian infrastructure, while also telling Netanyahu to pull Israeli troops out of Syria and Lebanon. Meanwhile, the Trump administration removed protections on nearly three million acres of Utah national monuments to allow drilling and mining, despite Utah officials saying there's little energy potential at Bears Ears and companies previously found Grand Staircase-Escalante's coal deposit unprofitable during Trump's first term — so the destruction is both gratuitous and pointless. And finally, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a one-year ban on data center construction in the state while assessing their environmental impact, which is the most rational thing anyone in government has done all week. Last week, ICE agents killed a Mexican man in Houston, Texas, who was driving to work and was not the target of an ICE operation – despite what the Department of Homeland Security said initially. And yesterday, ICE agents in Maine killed a Colombian man who was legally permitted to work in the United States. He was also not the target of an operation. This marks two deaths at the hands of ICE officers in the last week alone. For more on what's behind the recent surge of ICE activity – and violence — we spoke to David Bier. He's the Director of Immigration Studies at the Cato Institute. And in headlines, Trump reverses course on charging ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh makes his first appearance before Congress, and Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett testifies about the sharp increase in threats she's experienced since joining the nation's highest court.Show Notes: Check out David's work – cato.org/people/david-bier Call Congress – 202-224-3121 Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/y4y2e9jy What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcast Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/ For a transcript of this episode, please email transcripts@crooked.com

The Department of Homeland Security breaks nearly 12 hours of silence on a deadly ICE shooting in Maine, saying the officer was "fearing for public safety.” However, the statement did not explain why that ICE officer thought the driver was a threat. Maine Independent Senator Angus King joins to talk about what he knows about the shooting and what he hopes to see with the investigation. Learn more about your ad choices.
