Standard Orbit 178: The Gospel According to Star Trek Author Kevin C. Neece Interview. On first glance, the Christian worldview and the humanistic worldview of Star Trek would seem to have nothing in common. After all Star Trek takes place in a future when religion has essentially vanished from Earth. In that case, how can there even be a "gospel according to Star Trek"? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by author and speaker Kevin C. Neece to answer that very question. Through The Gospel According to Star Trek book series and his The Undiscovered Country Project, Kevin poses questions about the spiritual significance of Star Trek as both popular art and cultural phenomenon from a Christian perspective. Calling all nerds, it’s time to geek out! This week on the podcast we’re talking about Star Trek. Joining us is Kevin C. Neece, author of the book the Gospel According to Star Trek - the Original Crew. Don’t worry, we’re not finding hidden meanings to uncover the true Christian meaning behind the show and films but rather looking at the series from behind the lens of a Christian worldview. In this first segment, after a quick geek-out (including a comparison between the original storyline and the one found in the most recent theater releases), we discuss Gene Roddenberry’s faith and the impact upon his work. Be sure to share this with all your trekkie friends!
Kevin C. Neece and The Gospel According to Star Trek. In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling are joined by author and speaker Kevin C. Neece to discuss his new book, The Gospel According to Star Trek: The Original Crew. This first book in the Gospel According to Star Trek series explores the constructive connections between Star Trek and Christian theology. Kevin C. Neece argues that the humanism expressed in Star Trek is compatible with a rich tradition of Christian humanism, and that Star Trek's relationship with religion is more complex and nuanced than the typical atheistic interpretation recognizes. From Spock as a Christ metaphor in Star Trek II, III, and IV, to false Gods in The Original Series, Kevin C. Neece, Mike Morrison, and Zachary Fruhling explore the many-layered connections between the adventures of the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the worldview held by people of faith. Matter Stream: Science, Creativity, and the World Inspired by Star Trek
Kevin C. Neece: The Undiscovered Country Project. Star Trek presents a humanistic view of the future, a world in which science and technology have entirely supplanted religion and spirituality—at least on Earth. At the same time a core component of Star Trek is the exploration of what it means to be human. For many the omission of the spirituality contradicts this mission. Although we see religion from time to time in Star Trek, it always comes in the form of adherence to planet-controlling computers, aliens posing as gods, or is presented as antiquated belief systems on primitive worlds. As far as Earth and humans are concerned, the stories of various faiths are referred to as “ancient mythology.” But is this a realistic view of the future? In this episode of Matter Stream we’re joined by Kevin C. Neece, writer, speaker, and founder of The Undiscovered Country Project, an ongoing exploration of Star Trek from a Christian worldview perspective.
