In this episode, we break down THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST — a deeply moving and powerful portrayal of the final hours of Jesus Christ. We explore how the film brings to life a story that has shaped the world for generations, capturing themes of faith, sacrifice, love, and redemption with striking intensity. We dive into the emotional weight of Jesus Christ's journey, the strength and grace shown in the face of suffering, and how the film uses visual storytelling to immerse the audience in one of the most meaningful narratives ever told. We also discuss the incredibly grueling production endured by Jim Caviezel, including the physical and emotional toll of portraying Jesus Christ, which adds another layer of depth and authenticity to the performance.Through its performances, direction, and unwavering focus, the movie serves as a reminder of the depth of Christ's sacrifice and the message of hope that continues to resonate across time. Happy Holidays! Josh and Drusilla are celebrating with… The Passion of the Christ? Listen, it seemed like a good idea at the time. From wiki: “The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 American epic biblical drama film co-produced and directed by Mel Gibson from a screenplay he wrote with Benedict Fitzgerald. It stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus, Maia Morgenstern as his mother Mary, and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. It depicts the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus, largely according to the canonical gospels as well as additional accounts such as the purported mystical visions by Anne Catherine Emmerich and the Friday of Sorrows.[3][4][5][6] “Also discussed: Hamnet, The Last Temptation of Christ, School in the Crosshairs, the career of Obayashi, Dust Bunny, and more. Send us a textPASSION OF THE CHRIST “And in the ending days of two-thousand, twenty-five in the Year of our Bloodied Lord (R.I.P.), the three unwise men of TGTPTU shall gather and in their folly alloweth the unholy host Thomas to select the season's Christmas-adjacent movie. And there will be great wailing and weeping and gnashing of ill-cared for teeth by his selection. Yet the episode shall not be mid. The hosts shall bloody nail it. And there shall be great rejoicing in one accord upon its record.” -The Book of Ryan (or on its cover) 5:16-17, Revised New King Jim Edition Yes, ho-ho-humbug, it's our annual cross to bear: The Christmas-adjacent movie to end the year. In a rare moment of collective (fatigue / wisdom / pure awesomeness / mental constipation / fugue ß strike as appropriate), The Good The Pod and The Ugly hosts Ken and Ryan have allowed Thomas to pick the flick this season. He took a chance on a film he'd always wanted to but hadn't seen, and that cinema selection took them to church! Tom picked the Mel Gibson co-written, co-produced, and solely(soul-ly?)-directed, Jesus story spoiler: THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004). To their eternal credit, the hosts with no loyalty to any of the major- or bush-league Christian denominations managed to keep civil and polite, if not to each other then to the source material and Gibson's passionate release. Ryan's Catholic upbringing comes in handy for this, his third viewing, as he explains the church's different classifications of visions and what parts of the film pull from scripture and which are attributable to a 19th century fever dream. This ep, Ken talks sexy Satan, Ryan talks sexy Jesus, guest Jack has an unsexy hot take takeoff and landing, and his fellow Gen Z'er Tom sticks it to the olds after mis-Clarking. Skip to the end of the ep for a brief year-end recap of the best and worst first-watched and re-watched films covered in 2025 or skip further for spoilers from Ken as he shares his bulk-pricing Christmas presents for his fellow hosts. In the new year, TGTPTU takes a Graycation (or is Going Gray or lets its Gray Pride shine) with the start of Season 16, tentatively titled By the Powers of (James) Gray's Skull. And that's the gospel truth. Answer to the question raised during the episode: We're Not Going to Take It. Keith Moon wept. BREAKING: Mel Gibson Announces His Passion Of The Christ Sequel Will Be TWO Separate Films!
To celebrate Father's Day, we spend time with the story of one of the most important Old Testament patriarchs as depicted by acclaimed American filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. NOAH takes great liberties with the biblical legend of Noah, adding elements inspired by the pseudepigraphical Book of Enoch. In Aronofsky's NOAH, the harsh realities of day-to-day life in Bible times are exaggerated with high fantasy elements. The most notable addition to the story are the giant stone “Watchers”, towering giants whose stone exteriors imprison the souls of fallen angels doomed to wander Earth. These Watchers have a relationship with Noah's family, who they see as some of the last remaining humans on earth who care about doing God‘s will. Noah (Russell Crowe) hears the call of the Lord in a mysterious dream, which is later expanded upon when Noah's grandfather Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins) feeds Noah an ayahuasca-like hallucinogen, revealing the Great Flood and its brutal cleansing of the earth. Methuselah also gives Noah a seed from the garden of Eden, allowing Noah to carry on the esoteric knowledge of the garden to the new family line he will begin once the earth is destroyed. However, Noah is apprehensive about repopulating the Earth with humans who are by their nature prone to sin. He vows to kill the twins carried by his daughter-in-law Ila (Emma Watson) if they turn out to be girls, so humans will go extinct. He also doesn't let his incel son Ham (Logan Lerman) take a goth e-girl to be his wife. Fortunately, Noah's innate sense of human decency prevails (at least with Ila), because if he had killed Ila's babies, we wouldn't be alive to have a podcast today. Aronofsky's adaptation of Noah is similar to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST in the fact that it executes a Bible story with a mixture of ambitious high fantasy and gritty realness. It's admirable that Aronofsky is able to turn one of the most implausible Bible stories into something that feels real. Join me for an unpleasant look at the process of crucifixion. It was meant to be horrible and it certainly was. It successfully achieved its goals of being agonizing, public, prolonged and humiliating. All of this suffering is known as the PASSION OF THE CHRIST. But do not forget of another kind of Jesus' passion: His love for you. Only then can the official "passion of the Christ" make complete sense. https://youtu.be/homcpSPyUE0

We hope you all had a safe and relaxing holiday…because it's time to put on your church clothes and listen to the sermon of Apocalypse Video, as we bend our knee to the angry letters of the religious community and start a whole new monthly promotion: Jesusary. A month filled with nothing but Jesus-related content, ranging from his brutal crucifixion, to that one time that Willem Dafoe played him and Harvey Keitel was his best friend, the Brooklyn-sounding Judas. I'm your host, Dave, and joining me are fellow heathens and blasphemers, Mike and Ryan. Topics of discussion in this episode include Ryan's dismal AMC Passion experience; we all go “huh…?” as Jesus is depicted, apparently, as the inventor of the Chair; and finally, we take a look at the accolades The Passion of the Christ received - mainly how it performed in the most prestigious of award shows: the MTV Movie Awards. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. The film marked Malick's return to the director's chair after a 20 year absence from filmmaking and features an ensemble cast of dozens of recognizable faces, including many massive stars of the period reduced to mere minutes of screen time and a handful of lines of dialogue. Based on the James Jones novel of the same name, the movie is unlike any war film ever made and showcases Malick venturing deeper into his style of meandering camerawork, striking images of the natural world, and contemplative monologues delivered in voiceover (occasionally by actors we seldom see onscreen). We discuss the storied, decade-long journey of getting The Thin Red Line to screen, a process that involved Malick spending heaps of cash satisfying every one of his fleeting whims and every actor in Hollywood vying for a spot on the film's massive roster characters. Then, we discuss the film's juxtaposition of horrific war imagery with breathtaking shots of wildlife and nature - a visual contrast that enhances Malick's existential preoccupations with the nature of good and evil, darkness and light in the world. Finally, we praise Malick's working method, and how his decision to "shoot everything" allows his films to be born in the edit, often taking on thematic and visual nuances that were far from intentional on set, on the day. Chadd produced a new movie, Crumb Catcher, which is out in theaters TODAY 7/19/24. Check showtimes at your local Drafthouse or AMC. It's Holy Week, which means that on Friday night, I'm probably going to lose the last ten pounds of baby weight in tears while watching The Passion Of The Christ. One of Gibson's many genius, and deeply Catholic, choices in the film is his deliberate inclusion of scenes involving Christ's Mother. One stands out: as Christ first falls while carrying His cross to Golgotha, Mary sees Him. We are given a flashback, where He as a child stumbles on a stone path. Mary runs to Him, arms outstretched, her presence His succor. Flash forward, and she runs again, arms outstretched, as Christ chokes on His own blood, crushed under the weight of the cross. I imagine the profound grief and gratitude comingling in both of their hearts for just a moment of one another's presence. The crucifix takes on new meaning from perspective of the woman standing beneath it, soaked in His blood, blood of her blood. In so many ways, His wounds are hers, too. I imagine her human, maternal nature, her desire to bring Him comfort, to take her baby's pain away, to switch places, something, anything — all brushing up against the knowledge of the greater good to come. The cross is the fulfillment of her ultimate confidence in God's promise, unchanged by the bitter fact of Simeon's prophecy. She suffers alongside her Son, as only mothers do, in total surrender. His words in the Garden of Gethsemane and hers at the Annunciation echo one another: Thy will be done.Catholic tradition holds that we take Christ seriously by honoring who He honors. I love Gibson's Passion for so many reasons, but primarily because He takes Christ seriously by paying serious attention to His mother — and, relatedly, by refusing to shy away from the brutality He endured, she by proxy. This sincerity, the act of taking historical subjects seriously, is accomplished by placing oneself in the shoes of those subjects without pretense, judgment, or ideological imposition. Dr. Rachel Fulton Brown, my guest in this episode of Girlboss, Interrupted, in her latest book, Mary and the Art of Prayer: The Hours of the Virgin in Medieval Christian Life and Thought, has accomplished something so unique and interesting by doing just this. This history of Marian devotion begins with a call for readers to take their subjects, medieval Christians, seriously, by praying the psalms as they did throughout the day.I won't spoil any more surprises. This episode was so fun to record.
