Charitable giving should bring great joy and fulfilment. It should make you feel empowered and excited about the good you can do in the world. Many of us donate to charity, but do we do it intentionally? Lauren Janus has spent more than 15 years working in the charitable sector and is the founder of Thoughtful Philanthropy, a charitable giving advisory service, helping individuals and families become more informed and empowered philanthropists. That means she helps people really understand the strategy charities you're interested in are adopting and how they're spending your money. Lauren mostly works with retirees and their financial advisers. People's questions about how to give less haphazardly often arise during the retirement conversation. In this interview on episode 030 of The Retirement Café Podcast, Lauren explains what she means by giving your time, your talent, your treasure and your testimony.
Lauren Janus joins Ollie Smith to discuss whether charitable giving would be so attractive were it not for its tax efficiency.

In this episode you will learn: Why Lauren made the shift from the charity sector to running her own business Why Lauren settled on the name for her business, and why the word philanthropy is important The differences between the giving cultures in the USA where Lauren is from, and here in the UK How our early experiences with money influence our future philanthropy The potential reasons that more women give more of their wealth than men Why millennials are the most consciously ethical philanthropists The innovative ways that charities should (and are) using social media to encourage giving The difference between positively screened and negatively screen investing How you can start your own consciously ethical giving plan and teach your children to be philanthropic with their money too (including how to approach giving differently with girls and boys)

In this episode I’m joined by Lauren Janus, founder of Thoughtful Philanthropy. Thoughtful Philanthropy is a charitable giving advisory service for individuals, families and organisations that want to become informed and empowered philanthropists. With so many worthy charities vying for your attention, how do you create a giving strategy that transforms you into an engaged force for good in support of your issues? This is where the services of a philanthrophic adviser, like Lauren, come in. Lauren graduated with an honours degree in International Relations and devotion to the social change sector. Since then, she’s led change initiatives working for more than 10 years with formidable, for-impact organizations and gained deep insight of the field of nonprofits tackling today’s toughest challenges. Lauren has held positions at AARP, The United Way of the Bay Area, The Alliance for Climate Protection and Oxfam Great Britain. She also has a Masters degree in International Affairs and an MBA from the University of California, Davis. Here’s my conversation with Lauren Janus, founder of Thoughtful Philanthropy, in episode 353 of Informed Choice Radio.
