Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) Israel blocks food three times more than other aid in Palestine's Gaza: UN Israel has been blocking far more convoys carrying food aid within Gaza, where famine is looming, than convoys carrying other kinds of aid, the UN said. On Tuesday, a spokesman for the United Nations' humanitarian agency pointed to statistics from March showing that it was much more difficult to get clearance for delivering food than other aid in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory. Israel is facing mounting international pressure to allow more aid into Gaza, which is facing a humanitarian catastrophe six months into the start of Israeli bombardment. *) Australia considers recognising independent Palestinian state Australia has become the latest country to advocate formal recognition of a Palestinian state. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Tuesday that recognising a state of Palestine could restart the moribund Middle East peace process and undermine extremist forces in the Middle East. "Recognising a Palestinian state — one that can only exist side by side with a secure Israel — doesn't just offer the Palestinian people an opportunity to realise their aspirations", she told an audience in Canberra. "It also strengthens the forces for peace and undermines extremism. It undermines Hamas, Iran and Iran's other destructive proxies in the region." *) Palestine hails Turkish export restrictions on Israel amid Gaza onslaught Israel threatened to hit back at Türkiye over its decision to restrict exports of certain goods, saying they will “appeal to pro-Israel countries and organisations in the US to stop investments in Türkiye and prevent the import of products from Türkiye.” Israel will "contact countries and organisations in the US to stop investments in Türkiye and to prevent the import of products from Türkiye, and to our friends in the American Congress to examine a violation of the boycott laws and impose sanctions on Türkiye accordingly,” Israel Katz, Tel Aviv's foreign minister, said on X on Tuesday. A statement by Katz's office said he ordered the Foreign Ministry's economic office to “draw up an extensive list of products that Israel will prevent Türkiye from exporting to Israel.” “Türkiye unilaterally violates the trade agreements with Israel, and Israel will take all necessary measures against it,” the statement said. *) Europe's top court condemns Switzerland in landmark climate ruling Europe's top rights court has said Switzerland was not doing enough to tackle the climate crisis in a historic decision that could force governments to adopt more ambitious climate policies. Hopes had been high for a legal turning point ahead of the rulings in the three cases, treated as a priority by the 17 judges of the court's Grand Chamber. The Swiss association of Elders for Climate Protection — 2,500 women aged 73 on average — had complained about the "failings of the Swiss authorities" in terms of climate protection that could "seriously harm" their health. The court ordered the Swiss state to pay the association almost $87,000 within three months. Higgs' work helps scientists understand one of the most fundamental riddles of the universe: how the Big Bang created something out of nothing 13.8 billion years ago. Is There a Role for Mandates to Drive CDR?

This week, we're bringing you a panel discussion from the Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy's annual CDR conference. Our policy panelist, Wil Burns, hosted the conference and led this panel discussion on the role of mandates in growing CDR in the US. The US government has stepped forward into the role of subsidizing and encouraging CDR in recent years, offering a ‘carrot' to promote the new industry, in the form of large grants and tax incentives. But what could the government do to present a ‘stick'- requiring CDR using existing regulations? That's the topic of this policy panel featuring Dan Galpern, the Executive Director of the Climate Protection and Restoration Initiative, and Stephanie Arcusa, a researcher at the Arizona State University Center for Negative Carbon Emissions.  Dan spoke about using the Toxic Substances Control Act to regulate carbon emissions, including the possibility of mandating carbon dioxide removal as a condition for allowing ongoing emissions. He argues that the TSCA provides clear authority for such regulation, citing past precedents and legal interpretations. Stephanie discusses the concept of a Carbon Take Back Obligation, which would require fossil fuel producers to sequester a ton of carbon for every ton they extract. This policy aims to gradually transition to net-zero emissions by creating a demand for carbon removal and applying the policy upstream in the fossil fuel supply chain. Both approaches aim to address the challenges of scaling up carbon removal and mitigating climate change, but they also raise questions about political feasibility, environmental justice, and the impact on consumers, particularly those in lower-income households. We hope you enjoy this high-level look at the policy levers that may one day lead to the scaling up of CDR.   On This Episode Wil Burns Dan Galpern Stephanie Arcusa Resources Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy UN Production Gap Report Toxic Substances Control Act EU Industrial Net-Zero Act CA's CDR Market Development Act CBTO in the news Connect with Nori Nori Nori's Twitter Nori's other podcast Reversing Climate Change Nori's CDR meme twitter account   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carbonremovalnewsroom/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carbonremovalnewsroom/support

Instead of seeing ourselves as separate from the world we observe, can we imagine that it is the Buddha looking out through our eyes, wishing the best for everyone and everything? In this talk, Larry Robinson explains that in the Mayahana traditions, we sit and practice not to attain or accomplish anything, but to express our Bodhicitta, our true nature, and to connect with the underlying reality of all things: unity. He explores in further detail the practices that help reinforce our experience of unity: the 16 Bodhisattwa precepts. Through his continued work, he recognized the huge environmental impact of switching to tap water. Also the quality of water as a protected food, the convenience of immediate availability, and the extremely low cost of 0.2 Euro Cents per liter on average are unbeatable arguments for its enjoyment. In 2022, Şenol founded the environmental movement - Zerobottle. The issue of switching from bottled to tap water has become even more critical given inflation (which also affects bottled water) and independence from Russian fossil fuels (which are also used in the production and transport of bottled water). Not to speak of the hot weather periods we're experiencing as a result of climate change. The solution is tap water! Chantal Bilodeau is a Montreal-born, New York-based playwright whose work focuses on the intersection of science, policy, art, and climate change. She founded the Arts & Climate Initiative over a decade ago and in her capacity as artistic director, has been instrumental in getting the theatre and educational communities, as well as audiences in the US and abroad, to engage in climate action through programming that includes live events, talks, publications, workshops, national and international convenings, and a worldwide distributed theatre festival. She has spoken about the power of live storytelling to move people toward climate action in conferences and at universities in the US, Canada, and Europe, and has contributed to several academic volumes, including International Climate Protection (Springer, 2019), and Extraordinary Partnership: How the Arts and Humanities Are Transforming America (Lever Press, 2020). She is the co-editor of an anthology of short plays about the climate crisis titled Lighting the Way (2020). Awards include the Woodward International Playwriting Prize as well as First Prize in the Earth Matters on Stage Ecodrama Festival and the Uprising National Playwriting Competition. Her work has been presented in a dozen countries around the world. She is currently writing a series of eight plays that look at the social and environmental changes taking place in the eight Arctic states. In 2019, she was named one of “8 Trailblazers Who Are Changing the Climate Conversation” by Audubon Magazine.   From play writing and production to Climate Protection to adventures in the Arctic, Chantal Bilodeau recently joined Lesley to tell her stories of adventure and passion. Chantal shares how the costly events of Hurricane Harvey, followed by the exposure of Harvey Weinstein served as inspiration for her play No More Harvey's, one in a series of plays centered on Global Climate Change. With the Great Artic as the backdrop Chantal talks of how getting to know the Arctic and the people who live there is the most exciting thing that has happened to her, professionally. Listen in as Chantal reveals the genuineness, humility and kindness of the Arctic people that continues to impact her and how she sees life. The listener will also learn of Chantal's upcoming 5-day workshop called the "Artists & Climate Change Incubator" that will be held in Anchorage this summer and some of the ways she hopes to expand and continue her impact.
