With personal experience of cancer when only twenty-four and a career built around cancer care in the charity sector, Julie Worrall, Interim CEO at The Teenage Cancer Trust, is ideally suited to understand the very specific needs of young people unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with cancer. While radical change is desperately needed right across the sector to broaden the scope of cancer care beyond administering treatments, young people have fared particularly poorly when it comes to having their needs met, needs which are very specific to their age. The Teenage Cancer Trust is on a mission to change that, and has played a significant part in the inclusion of specific plans for young people in the National Cancer Plan for the first time.

So it was exactly six years ago this month that primary SOS host Rudy Fischmann started work on an ill-advised project— a rock opera. It was ill-advised because Rudy is actually living with brain cancer, and lacks enough left hand coordination to actually play any instruments traditionally, nor the energy. Still, he's managed to pull it off with the help of 60 other people from 12 nations around the globe. It may not be major musical history, but it's an absolute first of its kind.  So minor music history? The whole thing serves as a fundraiser for two great cancer charities… both very closely associated with rock opera kings The Who. I have no words, I am speechless. Walking 28 miles may not seem a lot, but getting up and dressed to face the day like she does is harder than you think. Not only is being diagnosed with cancer at 23 rare, Poppy was pregnant at the time. Her daughter, Bella (who she calls her boss) was born two days after her diagnosis, six weeks early. Maddie was diagnosed with Alveolar soft part sarcoma when she was 18. Shortly after she had primary tumour removed from her left shoulder, it was discovered the cancer had spread to her lungs. Lucinda and Russ are joined by Priya Singh, chair of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, who led the NCVO's internal reform after a review in 2020 identified structural racism, homophobia, sexism and classism.Priya describes the role played by the NCVO's trustee board in guiding the organisation through the process, knowing when to lean in and when to step back. Lucinda and Andy are joined by James Oakes, chief international officer at Omaze, and Paul McKenzie, director of engagement at the Teenage Cancer Trust.James describes Omaze's business model as a for-profit organiser of high-value prize draws, with a proportion of its profits shared with selected charity partners. He outlines what the company looks for in a charity partner and addresses some of the concerns about the model, including its potential to encourage gambling.Paul explains how the Teenage Cancer Trust benefitted from being Omaze's first charitable partner in the UK, with sums raised from two campaigns far exceeding expectations. “The partnership puts young people at the centre and not brand … we should all be working together to achieve Mission, rather than brand awareness or the size of our turnover or how many staff we employ.” Frank Fletcher is CEO of The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. The Trust supports young people with cancer, engaging them in outdoor activities, to help re-build their confidence and their lives, after cancer. We talk about how the Trust pivoted to a Virtual Summer during 2020 and what it has learnt during the pandemic in order to better support young people recovering from cancer. We discuss the Trust's newly formed partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust and CLIC Sargent (now Young Lives vs Cancer) - a fantastic example of leaving brand differences at the door to truly focus on what is best for young people. Frank shares his learnings on establishing this formal partnership and strongly encourages other charity leaders to follow suit. Recorded May 2021.
