Roberts oferece uma elaborada crítica sobre a análise de alguns autores marxista da relação entre play e trabalho. Segundo autores de uma leitura hegeliana de Marx, a emancipação do trabalho seria alcançada pela união com o play, transformando o trabalho em uma atividade desalienada e livre. Mas, para este artigo, não existe conciliação possível entre ambos e para defender essa posição, o autor recorre aos textos tanto da juventude, quanto do final da vida de Marx, para argumentar que a emancipação do trabalho não virá pela sua união com o play, mas pela constante luta pela redução da jornada de trabalho para, aí sim, termos tempo livre para jogar e acessar o "reino da liberdade".
