What do tariffs have to do with technical education? A lot more than you might think. As U.S. trade policy shifts, it's not just manufacturers who will feel the effects—STEM and technical education programs will too. From rising equipment costs to a surge in demand for skilled talent, today's tariff decisions could reshape how we train tomorrow's workforce. In this episode, Matt Kirchner explores five critical ways that educators should be preparing for the ripple effects of tariffs. It's a wake-up call to start thinking strategically, update your curriculum, and make sure your students are ready for a world where automation, AI, and global trade all converge in the classroom.Listen to learn:Why technical training programs should expect price hikes—and how to budget for themHow trade policy is accelerating the need for AI and automation educationWhat states will soon be looking for when they invest in workforce developmentWhy traditional “shop class” thinking won't cut it in a high-tech economyHow to scenario-plan your way through policy uncertainty5 Big Takeaways from this Episode:Tariffs will accelerate the return of manufacturing—and increase demand for skilled talent. As reshoring continues, manufacturers will need more trained workers than ever before. Technical education programs must be ready to scale up and supply that talent. The jobs aren't coming back the way they left—they're far more automated. Modern manufacturing is built on robotics, sensors, and smart systems. Educators must pivot from legacy skills to training in advanced automation technologies.Artificial intelligence is becoming central to every technical career. AI is transforming how work gets done across industries, including manufacturing. Students need exposure to data systems, machine learning, and the edge-to-cloud continuum now.Expect rising equipment costs—and budget accordingly. Tariffs will drive up prices on imported training tools and components. Programs should prepare for 10–15% increases and act early to avoid disruption.State funding is likely to grow—but only for programs that can prove results. As federal education policy shifts to the states, workforce funding will follow. Educators who can demonstrate strong pipelines to high-skill jobs will be the ones who get funded.Resources in this Episode:Book: Genesis: Artificial Intelligence, Hope, and the Human SpiritDeloitte study on manufacturing workforce gapsJamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chairman & CEO, "As always, we hope for the best but prepare the Firm for a wide range of scenarios.”Other episodes mentioned:What Rising Tariffs Mean for Companies, Workers, and the Future of Trade,John Murphy - Vice President and Head of International, U.S. ChWe want to hear from you! There has never been a time when the influence of nonprofit leaders was more needed. In particular, we need to have influence with the money and policy decision makers that hold the power to help or harm the people we serve. At the same time, a lot of things are happening that could leave a nonprofit leader feeling pretty vulnerable and powerless. Our challenge is to find a way to move like water and create that influence no matter what else is going on. One of the things I hear most frequently from nonprofit leaders I work with is some version of, we can't get XYZ critical decision maker to listen to us. We've tried everything and we can't get through to them. We either can't get them to listen, or we can't get access to them, or both. And then what happens is folks just kind of give up on those decision makers or resign themselves to not being able to have influence with them.I get how that happens, but what's that costing you? If these are money and policy decision makers that matter, can you afford not to have influence with them? Is that really an option? In this episode, we share:The two biggest problems most nonprofit leaders have in getting access to the right decisionmakers, and how to solve themHow past experience with decisionmakers can lead you to the wrong conclusions about influence building – and how that gets in your wayHow to train your subconscious brain to seek out and funnel influence-building opportunities to youHow to craft messaging that will really land with a decisionmaker, and motivate them to work with youWhat it really means to speak the decisionmaker's language, and why it makes such a huge differenceHow to know when it's time to switch tactics and build influence another way I'm preparing to launch a group coaching program that will focus specifically on helping you craft messaging that will shift decisionmakers' perspectives and get them on board with sustaining and even expanding your funding. This will be a coaching opportunity for a limited number of people to come in and be part of a group. There'll be some training, but most of it will be coaching and helping you to get your messaging dialed in so that you can address this pressing need. What I'm seeing right now is there's nothing more important than this. If that sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, message me through the podcast website or on LinkedIn. “When I halved my calendar, we doubled our business.” –Hanna HermansonSick of the marketing bro energy that doesn't work with your energy? I'm really excited to talk with Hanna Hermanson, the founder of Feminine Marketing Boutique, about the difference between masculine and feminine energy in marketing. What if instead of asking people to buy, you invited them in? What if marketing were less pushing yourself to do uncomfortable things and more about collaborative action? It doesn't mean you don't need structure. Hanna shows us how to be creative, be in flow, and have a cohesive message around our marketing. We talk about: The importance of building relationships Asking better questions than what time to post on InstagramHow to build consistencyLooking at where your last 10 clients came from and doing more of what attracted themHow to test/get familiar with your intuition (and how Human Design can help)Creating spaciousness by letting go of roles, clients, or other things that aren't a hell yesABOUT HANNAHanna Hermanson is the CEO and founder of the Feminine Marketing Boutique, helping women-led businesses scale beyond 6-figures, using a feminine marketing strategy that hinges on the principles of collaboration, connection, and relationship-building. Hanna is the host of The Feminine Marketing Show, and is currently “walking the walk” as a lifestyle entrepreneur, living in Merida, Mexico.LINKShttps://www.linkedin.com/in/hannahermanson/Hanna's newsletter dfycopywriting.org/free https://www.instagram.com/hannahermanson_/DOABLE CHANGESAt the end of every episode, we share three doable changes, so you can take what you've heard and put it into action. Change comes from action. Doable changes are things that you can add into your life, one at a time to make micro shifts and really create a ripple effect that will create a big change over time. Choose one that really piques your interest and roll with it. Here are three Doable Changes from this conversation:DO MORE OF WHAT WORKS. Take a look at your last ten clients. What attracted them to you? What worked to get them as clients? Are you currently doing that in your business? Could you do more of that?IS THIS A HELL YES? For everything you do this week, ask: Is this a hell yes? Or Does this light me up? Use the answers to make decisions about what you are doing short term — and what you can step away from long-term.MAKE MORE WHITE SPACE. We all need white space (or as we call it in FLOW, gold space). This isn't time scheduled to do something, but it is time held open for what we want and need in the moment. It could be rest or going to Costco in the middle of the day or taking a walk outside. You can create white space by scheduling it and holding it ope, cutting things that are not a hell yes, or getting up earlier. We recommend one of the first two.
