In this episode of my Lessons From The Tank Podcast, I talked with former health journalist and certified health coach Nancy Kalish, Founder of Rule Breaker Snacks. Nancy knew all about healthy eating but could never find a way to properly satisfy her sweet tooth. She came across some interesting plant-based dessert recipes on the internet, but they all tasted, well, too plant-based. So she started experimenting with the concept but switched out a few ingredients to create a super delicious, completely clean, vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, non-GMO brownie that hit all the marks - no flour, no eggs, no butter, and low sugar, but you'd never know. Although she walked away without a deal, Nancy's Shark Tank appearance sent her sales skyrocketing, and Rule Breaker Snacks now come in a wide variety of flavors and can be found on retail shelves across the country. Some of the best entrepreneurial advice and wisdom she shared with me included; "be prepared for something to go wrong every day," "don't underestimate the power of enthusiasm," and "have "radical persistence." Do you still occasionally think about a romantic someone special from your past? Do you sometimes wonder 'what if?' even though many years have passed and each of you has 'moved on'? Does a special past person still hold a tender place in your heart? If so, perhaps you have experienced a love that's been interrupted rather than a break-up. This episode is based on the fascinating research on lost love by Dr. Nancy Kalish.
Meet Aimee. She's an instructional math coach who has opened the door to homework changes in our elementary school section. Finding herself at a crossroads when her students grew frustrated and anxious around their math homework (all while losing valuable play and family time), Aimee began to ponder the value of traditional homework. She started to read a growing body of research that disproved the idea that homework has academic benefits in the early grades. Join us in a provocative conversation about the trials and tribulations of homework, and alternative activities to do instead that promote growth and learning. A few notes: We were recording on site at our school, and, as luck would have it, there was construction going on. So, you might hear a little bit of background sounds from time to time because hey, that's what happens when you record at a school! Also, Around 36 minutes into the interview the AC kicked on by itself. Sorry. They went into math classrooms and studied students in math for 45 minutes and those in class for an hour and a half. Tiims found that the amount of on-task time (or engagement) in the math classroom, the more students achieved. Therefore, the amount of time we have is not as important as the time students spent engaged in math (as opposed to teacher "teaching", or lecture time; more teaching time did not increase student learning). The truth, according to Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish, is that there is almost no evidence that homework helps elementary school students achieve academic success and little evidence that it helps older students. Yet the nightly burden is taking a serious toll on America’s families. It robs children of the sleep, play, and exercise time they need for proper physical, emotional, and neurological development. And it is a hidden cause of the childhood obesity epidemic, creating a nation of “homework potatoes.” Senior Dad Stan Goldberg chats with Sara Bennett and learns what the value of homework is.
