See what your thoughts are on if they decided correctly on the naming choice! Featuring: Nick Bentley - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host
House rules are everywhere from the tables of aspiring game designers to the most casual of hobbiests. But why? Are they a way to give a game more of the player's personality? To fix broken mechanics? And when does that fun little rules twist change the game enough to become something more than what is printed on the box? This week Steve, Robert and Evan dive into the topic of house rules with special guest Austin Harrison from IV Studios (Moonrakers, Veiled Fate, Fractured Sky). But recently, he took up a new role with Underdog Games: a game publisher smashing up conventional wisdom and selling 100,000s games in the process. This week we have the deepest conversation I've had before or heard before about *why* people buy one game rather than another. This is an absolute must-listen for aspiring game creators. Most artists want to get their work on the walls of a gallery, at least until someone buys it! How do you get your work into a gallery? What should the relationship be between you and your gallery? Are there tings that you must never do when dealing with a gallery - and are there things that the gallery should not be doing? In our second podcast interviewing Nick Bentley owner of Bils and Rye Gallery in Kirkbymoorside in North Yorkshire, Peter and Laura talk about how the relationship should work, how you might approach a gallery and gives some frank advice on things you should avoid.
It's great to hear what artists think about galleries, but that is only one side of the story. Today Peter and Laura talk to Nick Bentley, owner of Bils and Rye, a wonderful gallery in the North Yorkshire town of Kirkby Moorside. Bils and Rye have a great portfolio of artists including sculptors, painters, printmakers (including Laura, which is how we were able to lure Nick into our studio!) and ceramicists. Nick's view is that a gallery needs to be more than a place that potential buyers might visit: it has to be pro-active, finding both artists and buyers and fostering a healthy relationship with both in order to thrive as a business. If you would like to know more about Bils and Rye then you can visit their website www.bilsandrye.com or find them on all the usual social media platforms
What is the relationship between literature and sociology? Laurie Taylor discusses fiction and the real world with crime writer Denise Mina, criminologist Dick Hobbs and English literature lecturer Nick Bentley. From Charles Dickens' "Oliver" to Alan Sillitoe's "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning", literary descriptions of the social world - and working class life in particular - have often been called "realistic". But how has 'real life' been misrepresented by scholars and novelists alike? Can ethnography produce fictions of its own? And what skills are vital for any writer who wants to capture the complexity of everyday life? Plus, is it really true, as WH Auden once suggested, that "poetry makes nothing happen"? Laurie and guests discuss the influence of literature and sociology on attitudes and policy, reflecting on how both can make a meaningful impact. Producer: Alice Bloch.
