Feudum by Mark Swanson is one of my all-time favorite games, but after five expansions fans of the game are hungry for something new from its creator. I had the opportunity to speak with Mark about the future of his company Odd Bird Games and he had some exciting news. He has been teasing in social media that a new game will be coming out, but in fact he has a total of three brand new games in the works that will be crowdfunding in 2023 and 2024. Mark had a lot to say about these new games, called FIR, FLED, and an as yet unnamed CCG. If you're a fan a Feudum then this is a must listen episode, but to be honest after listening to this episode you will probably be a fan of everything Odd Bird Games has to offer.

This week I got to speak with the designer of one of our all time favorite games. Actually, we talk about this game all the time and use it as a bench mark when discussing other games. If you haven't guessed already the game is Feudum, and the designer is Mark Swanson. I got to find out about how Mark goes about creating a game, and why he decided to do game design. We also got to talk a little about his next game, the much anticipated follow-up to Feudum.
Emma and Gil sit down with Carla Kopp of Weird Giraffe Games and Galactic Raptor Games to discuss designing solo modes for games, the merits of "bots" in solo games, and how these bots tend to be named "Steve." SHOW NOTES 2m00s: Carla's first published game Super Hack Override. 4m53s: We spoke with Morten Monrad Pedersen on Ludology 154 - Leave Me Alone! about using Automa to make solo versions of games. 7m02s: Sarah Reed is a game designer, disability advocate, and all-around excellent person. 11m00s: The Cat Lady implementation for iOS and Android. 18m20s: Just a quick reminder that we’re talking about the digital implementation of the game Cat Lady, as opposed to Carla’s tabletop AIs. AI difficulty levels are more common in apps than they are in tabletop games. 19m45s: The Splendor digital implementation is sadly no longer available. 20m34s: Gil mentions the solo mode that comes in the tabletop version of It’s a Wonderful World. Emma mentions the solo mode from the Galaxy Trucker app. 21m13s: Calico 21m47s: Gil forgets to mention that Friedemann Friese included an “achievement sheet” in Copycat. 23m49s: Race for the Galaxy. We chatted with Theresa Duringer, CEO of Temple Gates, who developed the app, in Ludology 177 - AI AI, Captain! 24m26s: We're talking about the COIN (Counterinsurgencies) series of games, which have asymmetry built into them. Usually, each faction has a bot that allows many or all factions to be present in the game, even at a low player count. We talked to Volko Ruhnke, who began the series, in Ludology 178 - COIN Operated. 24m56s: The virtual gaming platform Tabletop Simulator. 26m54s: The three-body problem. 27m19s: Power Grid: The Robots 28m33s: Dune: Imperium, Smartphone Inc. 29m21s: Gil's second published game Battle Merchants. 31m24s: The Networks 33m10s: The underrated but absolutely amazing Fantasy Realms. 34m49s: Seven Wonders and Alhambra. The etymological origins of the word “Feudum” stem from Medieval Latin *feodum, which was borrowed from Old French *feu, which was borrowed from Frankish *fehu, which stems from the Proto-Germanic *fehu. Now, why are we mentioning all of this? Well because today's game sometimes feels like you're going down a scholarly rabbit hole. Feudum, by Oddbird Games, is an economic sandbox euro of hand and resource management for 2-5 players. Your goal is to take advantage of your position within 5 guilds at the most opportune time to be victorious by game end. Unless, of course, you starve, get sidetracked by sea serpents or develop an unhealthy interest in fermented grapes. Sound familiar?Should we play it again? Bring it to the channel? Edward & Amanda sat down with Mark Swanson, the designer of Feudum at BGGCon - here's the interview.
Eddie Inzauto and Bianca Figueroa-Santana review and discuss the city-planning, tile-placement drafting game Subdivision by Lucas Hedgren and Bezier Games. They also give their early critical impressions of the wilderness exploration tile-laying game Lost Valley: The Yukon Goldrush 1896 by Tobias, Roland, and Johannes Goslar and Pandasaurus Games. And finally, they offer a first-look preview of what Eddie has informally dubbed a "5i Game" - Invest, Improve, Influence, Incorporate, Intimidate. Feudum, by Mark K. Swanson and Odd Bird Games, is currently on Kickstarter, and the staff at GN have been enjoying a prototype copy. Guten Morgen liebe Klasse!
