Reviews: Eila and Something Shiny

Welcome to another review from the BATT team. Eila and Something Shiny is a  narrative adventure scenario/campaign game designed by Jeffery CCH and published by NorthStar Games (though it's original printing was from ICE Makes). It was acquired as a Christmas gift and so this is not sponsored by the publisher. It should be noted that the entirety of the Final Thoughts section is going to heavily spoil the game, so please keep that in mind if you want to listen to the first half of the review. We do timestamp and call out when that spoiler territory will be crossed and give ample time to stop listening.  --- This review's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro  00:02:30 - Gameplay 00:04:50 - Learning Curve 00:05:31 - Art and Theme 00:06:03 - Components 00:08:28 - Iconography and Font 00:10:02 - Ease of Teach 00:10:16 - Replayability 00:11:11 - Final Thoughts (00:11:37 for getting past the spoiler buffer) 00:22:16 - Outro --- Links! As stated, here are safe links to go read RubyQuest and NanQuest at. Please keep in mind that these become very adult and dark relatively quickly and I wouldn't recommend reading them around children or at work or on work devices.  Ruby did come out first and I think is a better first read to get acquainted with the style but push comes to shove I actually think NanQuest is the superior of the two.  RubyQuest: https://mozai.com/quests/RubyQuest/ NanQuest: https://mozai.com/quests/NanQuest/ --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. I visited the show last year as a member of the press. I spoke to a lot of exhibitors and spent time in the evenings catching up with friends and playing a few games. However, this year was different. For the first time, I came up to demo games on behalf of Asmodee. That meant my travel, food and accommodation were all paid for and I even got a bit of an hourly wage. At the same time, it also meant I only had an hour's lunch break to wander around the halls. It really changed my experience of the UK Games Expo 2023. In episode 59 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Ben Goldman the designer of Paint the Roses published by Northstar Games. He talks about designing co-op games and how adding the Alice and Wonderland theme to a previous quilting theme added to the design of the game. From the stacking of roses to grow the Queen's height and speed to adding the white rabbit to help people understand how the Queen's movement works. There were a lot of minor changes to the design to make this a challenging, yet fun co-op puzzle game with a nice rubber band effect. And for those of you who want some tips on how to beat this game check out this blog.    Featuring:  Ben Goldman - Guest  Danielle Reynolds - Host

The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation. Multi-Deck System Games! Canadian content! Kevin Bacon! So many digressions in an episode packed with so much culture it couldn't even fit in one of Vin Diesel's muscle shirts. We do, however, focus on games long enough to rhetorically ask--with several stress patterns--of David Thompson: who is this guy? As a note, during the time of the taping of this episode, David Thompson released five more excellent board games. We received a number of questions of a more personal nature which we have decided not to address. This is only partially out of a sense of privacy. Rather, we are firmly of the editorial position that the show is best when we focus on games, rather than the personal details of the hosts. We pride ourselves in only wasting a certain amount of your valuable time, and were we to indulge in more personal digressions that could easily balloon the show well beyond the limits of absurdity. 01:08 AYURIS: Flotilla (J.B. Sorry that this ends abruptly, we had some weird tech issues toward the end. Somehow a conversation about Metroid Dread and Golf Story lead to a celebration of emergent narrative. I reveal my most hated game (T.I.M.E. Stories, sorry). Somehow we briefly mention the Dave Matthews Band playing a gig at my manor in Victorian England while Mary Shelly, Percy Shelly, and Lord Byron canoodle in the manor's “conversation” pit. Welcome back to another episode of Then and Now! This week we are chatting about our experiences playing Oceans from Northstar Games. This is a relatively new addition to the closet, but we had played a previous iteration a few years ago: Evolution. Oceans is an engine/tableau building game that is gorgeous to look at, but is it as good (or bad) as we remember from our first play through? Listen in to find out as we talk about how we felt when this game entered the collection, pause to play it again, and come back with a fresh perspective. Audio warning! We have a brand new setup that came together between the Then and Now segments, so when we come back from the play through we are quite a bit louder then when we ended the first segment.

Five years prior he joins with North Star Games to startup a new studio focused on making great digital board games.  Scott now runs the development team and is the product manager for North Star Digital Studios.  Evolution Board Game was the studio’s first release, and Evolution: Education Edition now joins it as a digital board game targeting the education and learning space.

In this Episode of Quick Looks from The Long View, T.C. Reid and I check out three new titles for your consideration. First up is Okey Dokey from Hisashi Hayashi and Tasty Minstrel Games. Is this little filler worth your time, or should you let this one pass on by? Next up is Coal Baron: The Great Card Game from Stronghold Games. How does this compare to the board game? Is it best with two or four? Listen to hear our thoughts. Finally, we examine Evolution: Climate from North Star Games, LLC. Is this the next step in the (ahem) evolution of this game series, or is it one you should let wither on the vine? Tune in to find out! Thanks to my generous sponsor www.gamesurplus.com for their continued support of The Long View. Be sure to check them out when you place your next online order and find out what makes them so special. Thanks, of course, to YOU as well for listening!
