TEX-TREK Mission 359: STAR TREK : TNG's "The First Duty" Back-Trekking RetrospectiveThis week Dave returns to discuss one of Fatheree's all-time favorite TNG episodes. "The First Duty" is a Starfleet Academy-centric, serious, drama that sets the bar pretty damn high for the upcoming show. Also, this excellent story is a great example of how good Star Trek can be even when focused on cadets and teachers. In this week's episode, I had a grounding conversation with Laura Montesanti about why travel can be a practice of healing rather than a form of escape. Laura shared how the silence of Covid helped her reconnect to purpose which led to creating Synergy The Retreat Show, a trade event designed to change how our industry does business by placing wellbeing, community and experiential practice at the center. We explored the idea of destination energy, the importance of designing retreats that truly regenerate people and places, and the small accessible practices such as breathwork, smiling and mindful time in nature that can make wellness feel normal and available to everyone. Laura's stories from trekking in Nepal to living in Montenegro show what becomes possible when place and human connection align. If you work in travel, hospitality or wellness or if you want a holiday that feels meaningful and restorative this conversation offers a powerful lens for rethinking travel.Inside this podcast:The origin story of Synergy and how the quiet of Covid revealed a new purpose. Why retreats can be tools for transformation rather than escape. How community and experiential design create deeper and longer lasting business relationships. Practical and accessible practices that support wellness such as breathwork and mindful time in nature.

Join us as we revisit the debut of Khan Noonien Singh, the genetically engineered tyrant whose clash with Captain Kirk would echo across Trek canon for decades. “There is something in us,” nature writer Jay Griffiths says, “that detests the tepid world of net curtains … the chloroform world where human nature is well schooled, tamed from childhood on, where the radiators are permanently on mild and the windows are permanently closed.” Lost with her life and desperate to escape the confines of the modern world, Jay set out on a journey to explore the world's wildest places. She would explore ice, earth, water, fire and air. It would take seven years and all her savings. She would sing with cannibals in the highlands of West Papua, drink ayahuasca with shamans in the amazon. She explored the frozen arctic with Innuits and the fire desert with the aboriginals of the Australia. Through her travels Jay learned the wisdom of the indigenous people that call these elements home. She discovered how they shaped their culture and beliefs, and in time how they shaped her too. She was seeking wildness. She was following her ‘feral angel', listening to its call to take flight and reconnect with the wildness inside her. This episode is the original interview I did with Jay a few years ago. The documentary ‘Adventure' episode is about 100 episodes back in the feed. Check out it out on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your show. I'm re-running the original interview now for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it's an amazing chat, and I had to cut so much good stuff out to make the documentary. And secondly, it's Native American Heritage Month and although Jay doesn't spend time with Native Americans, her story is about learning how indigenous people connect with the wild in ice, earth, air and fire. This is a story for anyone that's ever crawled up the walls, stared out the window and dreamed of escape. This is a call to the wild. Highlights include: · Take ayahuasca with shamans in the Amazon · Walk naked and alone into the frozen wilderness of the Arctic · Trek the highlands with the freedom fighters of West Papua, one of the most remote and least-visited places on earth · Have dinner with cannibals · Find out how to apply the wisdom of the wild in our own life Jay's book of this adventure is called ‘Wild: an Elemental Journey'. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of nature writing I have ever read and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Her latest book ‘Why Rebel?' is awesome too. Search them up wherever you get your books – you won't be disappointed! In this episode of the EXARC Show host Phoebe Baker chats with Markus Klek about his exciting - and sometime scary - hike up to the location where Ötzi the Iceman was found in 1991. The hike required a good deal of strenuous climbing and brought challenges Markus had not encountered before. It was another opportunity to test his equipment and to gain more understanding of what it means to be trekking in a mountainous environment in Stone Age gear.Markus is an independent researcher focusing on indigenous and prehistoric skin processing technologies, as well as related work in bone, antler and ivory tools. He has published three books on leather and leather-related technologies and has run a successful business centering on prehistoric leather working, Paläotechnik, since 1996. Support the show

Today, we're sharing a special episode honouring a true explorer who we lost last week. Dr. Jane Goodall was a pioneering primatologist, and conservationist best known for her groundbreaking work with wild chimpanzees in Tanzania. With no formal scientific training at the time, she began observing chimpanzees in 1960 and soon made discoveries that redefined our understanding of animals — including tool use, emotional depth, and complex social behavior. Over her lifetime, she became a global icon for wildlife conservation and animal welfare, and her work continues to inspire millions to protect the planet and live in harmony with nature. Unfortunately, we were never able to get Jane on the show – that would have been a dream come true! So, it's not an episode directly about her. But it does raise some themes that were inspired and borne from the work she did … and it does feature chimpanzees, as well as Mountain Gorillas, who as primates are our distant ancestors too. Today, we're going to follow Praveen Moman, one of the world's leading primate conservationists, into the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda in search of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, and to the Kyambura Gorge, in Uganda, in search of a lost troop of Chimpanzees. Seeing mountain gorillas, or chimpanzees in the wild is one of the rarest and most inspiring wildlife experiences on the planet. There is an immediate bond, a sense of connection. And what we'll discover is, when you look a mountain gorilla in the eye, you see yourself reflected back. Highlights include: - Trekking in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda in search of the critically endangered mountain gorilla - Hearing what it feels like to sit quietly among the troop, as babies come curiously up to explore, and the 400lb male silverback brushes past - Walking into the Kyambura Gorge as the lost troop of Chimpanzees comes down from the canopy and surrounds you on all sides - Being inspired by Praveen's story, a refugee of Uganda who returned to his beloved homeland to help rebuild one of the most war-torn regions on the planet FIND OUT MORE Janegoodall.org volcanoessafaris.com gorillafund.org FOLLOW US: Instagram: @armchairexplorerpodcastFacebook: @armchairexplorerpodcastNewsletter: armchair-explorer.com PODCAST RECOMMENDATION Check out the Smart Travel Podcast: This week's show is supported by the new Smart Travel Podcast. The Kokoda Track Podcast: Your Questions Answered Are you preparing for the adventure of a lifetime on the Kokoda Track? In this informative episode, host Glenn Azar addresses three critical questions from a future trekker that many potential hikers wonder about but rarely ask. From the practical aspects of food and meal timing on the track to managing illness in the jungle and surviving the infamous "Chiropractor Express" truck ride, Glenn shares insights from his impressive 98 crossings of the Kokoda Track. This episode offers valuable preparation tips that go beyond physical training, helping you prepare mentally and practically for this life-changing journey. Timestamps and Key Takeaways: **1:15** - Food on the track: Glenn explains the 24-hour ration pack system that allows trekkers to graze throughout the day rather than having set meal times- Packs include a variety of foods: rolled oats, canned goods, noodles, snacks, and beverages- The grazing approach helps those who can't exercise on a full stomach **4:30** - Managing illness on the track: What happens when trekkers get sick?- Stomach issues are less common than expected due to sealed food packages and hygiene practices- When illness occurs, the group continues moving but at a slower pace- Proper hydration and basic medications usually resolve issues without major delays **6:15** - The "Chiropractor Express": Surviving the truck ride from Popondetta to Kokoda- Despite the bumpy ride, motion sickness is rarely an issue due to open-air seating with good airflow- The scenery and interaction with locals provide a welcome distraction- Front seating options available for those particularly concerned about motion sickness **9:45** - Glenn's invitation for listeners to submit their own questions and his commitment to keeping the Kokoda spirit alive Ready to take on this incredible journey? Glenn's expert advice will help you prepare properly and approach your trek with confidence. Listen now and take the first step toward your Kokoda adventure. In this Tough Girl EXTRA episode, we catch up with Tiphaine Muller, the intrepid French adventurer who continues to push her boundaries through long-distance cycling and remote, high-altitude trekking. Now 31 and based in Chamonix, France, Tiphaine has spent the last decade traveling the world by bike, exploring five continents. Her latest journey saw her pedaling from the Alps to the Himalayas before tackling one of the toughest and most remote treks on earth: The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) in Nepal. This conversation picks up from where we left off in her first Tough Girl Podcast interview (November 2021) — where she shared her early adventures and passion for slow travel. This time, we dive deep into her 2024 journey: Cycling from France to Nepal through the Balkans, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and the Himalayas — all while managing extreme heat, border crossings, and a strict budget of €10/day. Hiking the Great Himalaya Trail solo (West to East), over 80 days, through towering 5,000m+ passes, remote villages, and ever-changing terrain — while battling physical exhaustion, route-finding issues, and high-altitude nutrition struggles. Tiphaine candidly shares: The logistics and challenges of arranging permits for restricted zones without a guide Her coping strategies for trekking alone in high mountains Cultural highlights from cycling through Turkey and Iran How she funds her travels and balances life back home as a social worker Her future goals — including film-making and another epic cycle across South America This episode is a deep, honest reflection on the highs and lows of big adventures and what it takes — mentally, physically, and emotionally — to keep moving forward when things don't go to plan. Don't miss this inspiring update from a woman who truly lives the spirit of adventure, one pedal stroke and step at a time. Bhutan is the last of the great Himalayan kingdoms. Still largely untouched by outside influences, shrouded in mystery and magic, this Buddhist country, hidden for centuries on the roof of the world, is like nowhere else on the planet. Follow British Travel Writer of the Year Emma Thomson as she explores the culture and majesty of Druk Yul, Land of the Thunder Dragon, as it's known by its people. Shunning the usual group tour, Emma stays with local families miles from the tourist trail and discovers, because of that, a glimpse of the real Bhutan most travellers will never see. But this is more than just an adventure. Cut off from the rest of the world until 1974, and surrounded by virtually impenetrable Himalayan peaks on all sides, Bhutan has remained culturally intact for centuries. It is a real-life Shangri-La, a kind of fabled mythical kingdom hidden in the mountains, where spirituality and happiness are more important than money and economic development. Intrepid travellers whisper its name in hushed and reverent tones for a reason. Bhutan is, perhaps, the most enlightened country on Earth, and when we visit some of that wisdom and inspiration becomes a part of us too. Highlights include: • Staying with two local Bhutanese families in remote rural villages, far off the usual tourist trail • Experiencing real Bhutanese daily life: tending the fields, bathing in hot stone baths and helping to prepare the meals - fresh dumplings, curries, chillies and cheese • Exploring Punaka Dzong, the most beautiful of all of Bhutan's fortress temples • Trekking to the Tiger's Nest Monastery, which clings to the face of a sheer cliff and is the holiest site in the country • Visiting Bhutan's head of astrology, which is usually forbidden to tourists and discovering a surprise message there that might just shake your scepticism. • Be inspired by the peace and serenity of the most enlightened country on Earth, and learn how to take that wisdom and stillness into your own life too CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST Instagram: @emmathomsontravels Learn more about your ad choices.

The vast beauty of America's national parks beckons throughout the seasons, but knowing exactly when to visit each one can transform a good trip into an unforgettable adventure. In this captivating episode, we welcome extraordinary globetrotter Jennifer Broome, who recently conquered Mount Kilimanjaro's 19,341-foot summit and has visited over 250 National Park Service units across the country.Jennifer unveils the hidden treasures of springtime park visits, starting with Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park, where a rare "surge flow" phenomenon creates backward-flowing ripples in Medano Creek during May and early June. She transports us to Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles off Key West, where seaplane rides offer glimpses of marine life en route to Fort Jefferson—the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere. Our journey continues through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's Chain of Craters Road, where visitors can experience everything from active volcanic landscapes to ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs along the jagged coastline. Jennifer also shares her unforgettable solo hike through California's lesser-known Pinnacles National Park, where she witnessed endangered California condors soaring overhead—a magical moment made possible by visiting during the quieter spring season.Beyond these destinations, Jennifer offers practical wisdom for maximizing spring park visits: avoid spring break crowds, consider weekday visits, pack appropriate layers for unpredictable weather, and don't miss Utah's "Mighty Five" parks in April when conditions are ideal. Her stories remind us that our national parks offer not just scenery, but moments of profound connection with nature that can only be experienced firsthand.Whether you're planning your next outdoor adventure or simply dreaming of America's natural wonders, this episode provides the perfect guide to experiencing our national parks at their springtime best. It's a wonderful way to explore and have an authentic adventure! In today's episode we cover the six benefits of taking a walking holiday, plus the six decisions you need to make, including: how to choose a destination, pace, when to go, how long to go, what to pack and we discuss training for your hike.
