Jack Green. Jack is a former two-time Olympian, coach, and mentor. Jack has been one of my favourite sources of content on LinkedIn, especially having been an elite athlete, with his insights into mental health, performance, and wellbeing. Expect to learn, the dangers of having potential, why you should have a comfort zone, the value of clarity, overcoming the fear of asking for help, creating horizontal relationships in coaching, the power of quality over quantity, defining what success is to you, how marginal gains are pointless if you don't have a strong foundation, and much more. Ryan was mocked by his schoolmates, but Jack Green befriended him. And then, one day, Ryan was gone. This Perspective originally aired in January 2017.
In this episode, I'm joined by ex-Olympian Jack Green, who specialised in the 400m hurdles and represented Team GB in the 2012 and 2016 games. Jack retired at 28 and now spends his time involved in workplace wellbeing, mental health and coaching. After being diagnosed with depression, anxiety, bipolar tendencies and at one point being considered a risk to his own life, Jack has faced not only the physical battle of high-performance sport, but the mental impact too. In this conversation, we dig into all of that, and also uncover why goal setting should be hard and the cost involved in achieving your ambitions. Enjoy. Thrive Jack Green
Jack Green is a Double Olympian, a formal global wellbeing lead, and a performance coach. He has this unique perspective on what it takes to achieve high performance, and he also knows about the dark side of sport, elite sport, and high performance. He knows how some of the mindsets that he cultivated for himself professionally to get to some of the highest levels in his sport were also some of the mindsets that really led to him living an unhealthy life and getting into some mental health challenges that really did derail not only his career, but his life in general. His philosophy has become simple: if you are thriving personally, you will no doubt thrive professionally. He's on a mission to help as many people as possible to be the best version of themselves. He retired from elite sport at the age of 28 after winning World and European medals. We talk about medals in today's conversation, and also why finishing 4th were some of the proudest races and competitions that Jack had. He has a passion for high performance and he has continued to step into that world as a coach, as a speaker, as a mentor, and he really does believe in the power of the mind to drive performance and to drive wellness. You're going to love my conversation with Jack; he's thoughtful with his words, he's wise beyond his years, and it's a conversation that we all need to hear. Jack had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “Luck doesn't have any ownership over it, and so I don't think it's repeatable” (6:35). “I'm very big on let's get repeatable success” (6:40). “I could outwork anyone” (8:05). “Athletics became my kind of escape and the thing that was going to give me opportunities in life” (8:20). “I was fueled by insecurity. I was fueled by a fear of failure” (9:10). “No one ever took the time to find out who I was” (10:45). “Let me learn about you as a human being” (11:25). “I believe I'm a very good coach” (17:30). “I really enjoy doing it. It doesn't feel like a chore coaching. Sometimes running did” (17:40). “I like seeing people develop and grow” (18:10). “I'm really passionate about trying to win the right way” (19:10). “Sport is not healthy. Let's stop trying to make it healthy; let's try to make it healthier” (24:00). “Anyone can get to high performance, but elite performance is different” (24:30). “Be aware, don't compare” (27:00). “When I retired, the only thing I dropped was running” (33:00). “I'm going to expect that bad things might happen, but I'm going to help you in getting through that” (40:35). “If an athlete leaves me and isn't a better person, what am I doing with my time?” (41:20). “To understand what it takes to keep winning is absolutely incredible” (42:40). “I retired at 28 because I wasn't willing to pay what was required” (46:20). “We like shiny, we like new, we like easier” (55:35). “Be efficient” (56:05). “Wellbeing is very basic and not very exciting” (59:15). “I'm trying to give something practical, I'm trying to help people” (1:02:40). “I think people should share because they want to help other people” (1:02:50). Additionally, you can connect with Jack on LinkedIn. Thank you so much to Jack for coming on the podcast! This week, Ellie is on a mission with Olympic hero, Jack Green, star of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, and one of Team GB's most formidable sporting names. Ellie talks to Jack about his sporting career, the pressures of a sporting career and how the sometimes hidden pains of great success can weigh heavily upon mental health and wellbeing, and his work since with Champion Health UK, where he holds the position of Head Of Performance. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we are young, mental health issues can often be ignored or overlooked, passed off as the norm due to adolescence and emerging adulthood. When we attach our self worth to our achievements, it can be brutal. If we suffer failure, we can feel as though this is a reflection of our true worth, and our mental wellbeing suffers accordingly. A common problem in the world of sports, is that funding is low, and all income from the pursuit must be fought for. Many are on minimum wage. This only adds to the sense of negative self-worth and in some cases, desperation, as well as the pressures of the sport itself. Burnout occurs when we attempt to give more than we have in our tank. If we are only running at 60% of our capacity, then striving to do better, work harder, and give 100% when we don't have it, is a sure road to burnout. BEST MOMENTS 'It was about being the best in the world ever. Not just being the best in the world' 'When you're successful, it hides things even more' 'My whole life was about results, and that's how I measured myself as a human being' 'What effort does, is it allows you to be a human being' VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission Jack Green LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackgreenoly/?originalSubdomain=uk Champion Health UK - https://championhealth.co.uk ABOUT THE HOST The On A Mission Podcast brings you Ellie Mckay's no holds barred chats with some of the UK's top business leaders, entrepreneurs, celebrities, athletes, top thought leaders, influencers and mindset experts. Olga Tufnell (1905–85) was a British archaeologist working in Egypt, Cyprus, and Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s, a period often described as a golden age of archaeological discovery. Tufnell achieved extraordinary success for an “amateur” archaeologist and as a woman during a time when the field of professional archaeology was heavily dominated by men, typically with university training. Olga Tufnell's 'Perfect Journey': Letters and Photographs of an Archaeologist in the Levant and Mediterranean (UCL Press, 2021), edited by Jack Green and Ros Henry, presents, for the first time, letters and photographs by Tufnell primarily during her pioneering work in the 1920s and 1930s. From the Palestine Exploration Fund archive, these records not only shed light on the discoveries made by Tufnell and her colleagues, but are also a window into the past, often narrating contemporary events, and revealing a great deal about the way in which Olga Tufnell viewed the rapidly changing, often contentious world around her. With expert commentary and annotation by the editors that situate these records in their historical and archaeological contexts, this book is a crucial addition to the growing bibliography on the history of archaeology around the world, and the Levant specifically. This text can be read well as an archaeological account, a historical primary source reader, or a travelogue from a past age. In the UK "we look back on the 2012 Olympic Games through gold-tinted glasses, 'Super Saturday' and an inspiring celebration of British athletics uniting the country. For a then 20-year-old Green, the suffocation of 80,000 fans and personal expectations became the starter pistol to understanding and dealing with the mental health struggles he had always known were there.” "If one thing got past my armour, I couldn't manage it because I'd say 'I'm not meant to feel this way because I'm meant to be a superstar, I'm meant to be this robot'. That's when I'd really struggle and when I'd break down.”"As soon as I accepted that I'm a human being and human beings feel things, as soon as I said 'OK, I can feel this way, I'm going to sit with it, embrace and accept it', it kind of took the power away from them. A big part for me that probably saved my life was accepting and embracing vulnerability,"We talk about the pressures put on athletes across all disciplines, how it can feel like you're not seen or supported until you're contender for a medal, and once you're not you're just as quickly forgotten. Jack now coaches athletes, including Tokyo-bound Italian sprinter Gloria Hooper. He explains how he uses a different approach with every person, working hard to understand not just their physical needs but how they interact with their psychological make-up. He also held the position of Head of Wellbeing at BBC Studios before joining Champion Health UK as head of Performance, taking and using his own learnings to help others. “My purpose is to help as many people be the best version of themselves because that is truly what high performance is all about. My philosophy is a very simple one: a happy athlete is a fast athlete. And I use this philosophy in all of my well-being work.” For more on Jack:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Green_(hurdler) For more from us follow these links: My book Defining You - How to Build Your Unique Personal Profile and Unlock Your True Potential can be found at via these links and in all good book stores:https://bit.ly/DefiningYou2ndEdhttps://amzn.to/2lFMwOrIf you are curious about who you are, your brain and the influences in your life then please dip into my more recent book Mirror Thinking – How Role Models Make Us Human. https://bit.ly/MirrThinkhttps://bit.ly/MirrorUSACanhttps://bit.ly/2ylrc7H Connect with us/ask us any questions on:Instagram:www.instagram.com/fiona_murdenTwitter:https://twitter.com/fionamurdenFacebook:https://facebook.com/fionamurden Or for LouInstagram:www.instagram.com/loupylou78Twitter:https://twitter.com/louisejones78
Today, I am joined by Jack Green. Double Olympian who represented Great Britain at the last two Olympic Games, and more recently a passionate wellbeing consultant and mental health advocate. In this episode, Jack discusses his successful professional sporting journey, his massive performance accomplishments from a very young age and the psychological consequences of becoming immersed within a highly elite training environment – one which which influenced huge expectations and phenomenally high-performance demands. Gradually, his identity, perception of his worth was consumed within the sport – only causing his mental health to deteriorate. At 20 years of age, Jack stepped out in front of a crowd of 80,000 spectators in the London 2012 Olympics. His primary memory of this period was the overwhelming fear of failure and anxiety. This experience played as a significant trigger to his mental health struggles - subsequently receiving a diagnosis of anxiety, depression and bipolar tendencies.Jack decided to take a break. But although, in hindsight, Jack wasn't prepared, he returned to competing after 18 months, applying himself in yet another incredibly intense scenario... only triggering the old mindset to resurface. Despite self-coaching, he continued successfully within his sporting career – only highlighting how his obsessive characteristics, extraordinary work ethic and drive to succeed played both a facilitative and debilitative role – playing culprit to his performance achievements, but also a trigger to his psychological complications. As time continued and his career progressed, he acknowledged the detrimental effects of his mental health. He balanced out the possible future consequences and made the courageous decision of retiring – focusing on his wellbeing, prioritizing his happiness, and finally allowing himself to be vulnerable.Jack's purpose has now inspirationally changed to wanting to support others and empowering individuals to thrive. He is incredibly passionate about wellbeing, mental health awareness – today working alongside Champion Health, a personalised wellbeing platform, as their head of performance – now utilising his previous experiences and vast knowledge in an extremely positive and uplifting manner. We also discuss the outdated stigma of mental health within the sport culture. How it is deemed as a weakness and why psychological input and mindset coaching is paramount to ensure the health and overall wellbeing of competitors.
It is common in GIS to work with companies and on projects where large amounts of data have been captured across disparate systems. On today's Location Matters episode, we welcome back Senior GIS Developer, Nicholas Chai, to speak alongside our Principal GIS Consultant, Jack Green, about integrating different data sources into a single platform. Tune in as they discuss the process of integrating these data sources into a single platform, and if seeing each department's dataset in near-real time is possible.

Jack is a double Olympian, world and European medalist, and has previously worked as Wellbeing Lead at BBC Studios. After battling his mental health during a highly successful athletic career, Jack has first-hand experience of how wellbeing drives performance.
Jack Green made his Olympic debut in London in 2012 with a secret. He competed in the 400m hurdles and the 4x400m relay but what wasn't know about was his depression and mental health issues. Jack had wanted to be an Olympian since the age of 7 but his memories of London were feeling full of fear and scared. It was a time when sport really didn't address mental health issues. He's now working full-time in mental health for Champion Health and you can find the resources Jack talks about in the podcast here https://championhealth.co.uk/blog/ You can connect with Jack on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackgreenoly/?originalSubdomain=uk If you'd like to donate to Maggie's Cancer Centres here's my page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/destinationtokyo Support this podcast

Friend of the show and creator of www.cocoforcannabis.com Dr. Coco is back on the show to discuss a whole host of grow topics! The conversation begins by talking about autoflowers and photoperiods, the differences in how they're grown, and what the additional light time of autoflowering plants could entail. This leads to conversation about how much light a plant can handle without damaging the plant, which transitions the conversation towards the commonly misunderstood analytic know as DLI, or daily light integral. Dr. Coco explains when DLI is useful to measure and track, when it's not, and how people are misusing the term within the cannabis space. Jordan then poses an interesting observation to Dr. Coco regarding the maturation of trichomes when the buds are being agitated- whether by frequent trichome scoping, hard wind, or friction of a tent wall. ---GrowCast Membership is LIVE at www.patreon.com/growcast join today and get INSTANT ACCESS to hundreds of member episodes, plus GCTV Live Streams, giveaways, and more!--- ---Proud partners of Jack Green's Natural Garden Products, natural IPM solutions, soil conditioners and more! www.jackgreensgardenproducts.com code GCLISTENER for 25% off--- ---Thank you to Stu's Smoke and Vape for providing glass for GCTV- find Stu's Smoke and Vape all across Illinois, with dedicated glassblowers making unique pieces---
S3 E8 ESCAPE FROM CHARLIE SHEEN'S POOL HOUSE 1979's ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ, directed by podcast fave Don Donald Siegel (Coogan's Bluff, The Beguiled, Dirty Harry, Two Mules For Sister Sara), remains one of Clint's most memorable films. Turning down the laffs and winks that dominated a good portion of his 70's output, Eastwood is as taut here as Siegel's film detailing the heist-like planning and execution of... well, it's in the title. Ken saw it in theaters in 1979 and for years remembered it as being in black and white. Guess what, young Ken? It isn't! How does it hold up compared with the 639 other Eastwood films we have covered? Find out! Then 1990's THE ROOKIE, co-starring Charlie Sheen as a man who killed his brother (no, Emilio!!!) as a child or... something? They jump off a roof we think? Then, even though he is rich, he becomes THE ROOKIE to Clint's grizzled old pro of a donut-chomping, cigar-smoking cop. Also featuring Raul Julia and Sonia Braga as, um, German car thieves?!?! We think? Yeah, we have no idea either. What the heck is going on here? We will talk about the infamous scene between Clint and Braga, so don't worry or... worry. A lot. It's one of a kind, we will give it that. Eastwood made this for Warner Bros to pay back them after financing the little-seen White Hunter, Black Heart earlier in 1990 and The Rookie subsequently bombed as well. Go figure. When Lara Flynn Boyle is a beacon of good sense and tranquility in your movie, you are in trouble. Jack Green's reliably crisp and dark cinematography slaps so it is not all confounding.Unforgiven was two years away so this story ends well but Clint was stumbling bigly at this point, both artistically and at the box office. Huge turning point in his career looking back. But does that make it worth watching? Listen and find out!ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ: 00:03:30THE ROOKIE 00:43:05
