Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the relationship between gaming and the movies, with help from a crack squad of video game experts. Mark is joined by pop culture critic Kayleigh Donaldson, who helps guide him through the messy and complicated history of game adaptations on the big screen, from Super Mario Bros to Doom. He also speaks to Duncan Jones, director of the first video game film to cross $400m at the international box office - 2016's Warcraft. They discuss the challenges of adapting the cult role-playing game for a cinema audience. And Ellen asks the big question of whether video games can be considered an art form on the same level as film. To help her on her quest, she first speaks to critic Kambole Campell about why games get called 'cinematic' and whether the gaming world has auteurs. Ellen then talks to cinephile and game director Sam Barlow, about his highly successful - and highly innovative - video games Her Story, Telling Lies and Immortality. Sam explains how experimental directors like Nicolas Roeg and Peter Greenaway have influenced his work, which employs live footage of actors, rather than motion capture or graphics. Cynthia Bemis Abrams welcomes Victoria Riskin, a second-generation filmmaker with a rich Hollywood legacy. Victoria's parents—Robert Riskin, a prolific, Oscar-winning screenwriter, and Fay Wray, best known for her role in the original King Kong—were instrumental in shaping the classic years of the motion picture industry. And Victoria has crafted an impressive career all her own. She is a producer, writer, digital magazine publisher, PhD in psychology, and past president of the Writers Guild of America (WGA). She shares her experiences as WGA president and explains how power has shifted over time to the imbalance that has writers and actors on strike now in 2023. We also learn how Victoria's father tried leveraging his success with the studios to improve conditions for writers in the 1930s, but ultimately joined the Screen Writers Guild (SWG) as an early, active member. And, on the lighter side, you won't want to miss Victoria's stories from her trip to China with Norman Lear, Mary Tyler Moore, Larry Gelbart, and Carl Reiner. Victoria knows Hollywood from deep inside. No doubt you'll enjoy the interesting history and fun stories she shares with us. How might we connect more deeply with the Divine via dance? What can water teach us about the flow of life? And what happens when we combine the two? On the latest episode I explore this rich topic with Venezuelan contemporary dance performer, choreographer, and teacher Juliana Mendonca. Juliana is an innovative bodyworker influenced by Latin Traditional Dances, Butoh, Contact Improvisation and Physical Theater. In particular, water has represented a very important element for her to understand herself, and Juliana has dedicated many years to creating projects and performances inspired by the element of water. These include the music and dance company Raíz de Agua, La Naciente, Drop & Drought, Sono Somatic and most recently, Liquidanza – a relaxation and dance practice based in the water. In this episode we discuss:Juliana's early, formative experiences with nature, and why they made a deeper impression on her than her experiences within the Catholic churchJuliana's journey through formal dance training and into more experimental, flowing forms of dance, such as the Japanese Butoh dance methodHer relationship with water, including what it's taught her, and how she understands it as holding feminine energy that can benefit us allHow we can all deepen our awareness and understanding of the sacred nature of waterShow Notes If you'd like to know whose ancestral tribal lands you currently reside on, you can look up your address here: https://native-land.ca/You can also visit the Coalition of Natives and Allies for more helpful educational resources about Indigenous rights and history.I'm so excited to announce the launch of the Home to Her Academy, a school dedicated to seekers of Sacred Feminine wisdom! *Trigger warning: this episode briefly mentions acts of domestic violence, child sexual abuse & suicidal ideation. Listener discretion is advised*Breakdowns in our lives often pave the way for breakthroughs, especially when dealing with trauma and healing. Just like a puzzle that falls apart before being reconstructed, our moments of turmoil and pain can shake us to our core, but they also offer a chance for growth. When we confront our traumas and allow ourselves to feel and process the pain, we create an opportunity for deep healing. This week's powerful guest shares her own testimonies on how her past breakdowns lead to her current and future breakthroughs!Wanda Lopez is a 1st-Generation Latina mother of 2. From personal life traumas came the creation of her first movement, Her Story in a Smile, in honor of the many women who go voiceless due to trauma. This movement aims to not only tell impactful stories but also raise awareness of the depth that trauma and mental health can have on a woman.Wanda combines storytelling and photography, because let's be honest…how many times have we appreciated a woman's smile having no clue about all that smile has overcome? Her movement reminds women that it's never too late to reclaim your voice & speak your truth. She's currently completing her BA in Psychology & aims to raise awareness and empower women to appreciate their smiles even more. As women, we tend to hide a lot behind our smiles & the world deserves to know the truth behind it. Not for the world to approve but for the world to see women for what they truly are made of. You can find more about her work on Instagram & YouTube. Click here for a chance to be featured on her platform. It's important to recognize that breakdowns are not just stumbling blocks but also stepping stones towards breakthroughs. Facing our traumas head-on might be daunting, but it's through these very challenges that we unearth the hidden gems of self-discovery. Just as a diamond emerges from intense pressure, our breakthroughs shine as testaments to our resilience. This week's episode is inspired by a penile piercing called a "Prince Albert." Prince Albert was husband to one of history's most iconic monarchs - Queen Victoria. She took the throne at 18 years old and had the second longest monarch reign in the United Kingdom that spanned 63 years. She was a sheltered princess who was forced to transform into a formidable queen. Her reign is known as the "Victorian Era." There were many technical advancements, industrializations, and societal changes during her time, including a widely expanding empire. She was given many nicknames by the public throughout her life, but was last known as the "Grandmother of Europe." She had nine children, eight assassination attempts on her life, and set popular trends that we still follow to this day. We dig into the intriguing journey of the Bild Lilli doll and how it paved the way for the creation of Barbie. We unravel the tale of Lilli, a sassy and stylish doll who made her debut in the late 1950s. Lilli's daring and avant-garde fashion sense challenged societal norms and reflected the changing attitudes of women in the 1950s. Lilli is almost an anti-Barbie. From her risqué outfits to her confident demeanor, Lilli pushed boundaries and left a lasting impact on pop culture. But the story doesn't end there. Enter Ruth Handler, the shady co-founder of Mattel. Inspired by Lilli's allure, Handler basically stole Lilli and re-branded her as Barbie in the United States. Often overshadowed by her renowned literary creation, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley's own remarkable life story is nothing short of a gripping tale of love, tragedy, and groundbreaking literary achievements. In the early 19th century, amidst a society that restricted women's roles and ambitions, Mary Shelley defied all odds and emerged as one of the most influential figures in the history of literature. Born into a world of literary brilliance, as the daughter of the prominent feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and political philosopher William Godwin, young Mary was destined for greatness. We uncover her resilience in the face of personal tragedies, including the untimely deaths of her children and tumultuous relationship with Percy Shelley. She went through unimaginable ups and downs, mostly from the ages of 16 to 24! We also get into the captivating circumstances that led to the conception of Frankenstein, a tale of science, ambition, and the human condition that continues to resonate with readers and scholars worldwide. Miriam Makeba is a legendary icon who left an indelible mark on the world of music, civil rights, and African culture. She's known as "Mama Africa." Miriam comes from very humble beginnings. Her mom actually went to jail shortly after she was born due to making illegal beer. Miriam literally started off her life in jail. Thankfully, as a child she quickly discovered her mesmerizing voice and began her musical journey. She debuted with the famous Manhattan Brothers and grew her career to groundbreaking international success with "Pata Pata" and "The Click Song. " She would blend traditional African melodies with elements of jazz, soul, and folk music. Her music is heard today on commercials, TikToks, and even that trendy Bill Hader dancing Instagram reel. But Miriam Makeba was more than just a remarkable singer; she was a fearless advocate for social justice. As apartheid tightened its grip on South Africa, Miriam used her fame as a platform to speak out against the injustice and racial discrimination faced by her people. She played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the apartheid regime on the global stage, bringing the struggles of South Africans to the attention of the world. She was exiled from South Africa, but spent years as a global ambassador for the anti-apartheid movement while in the United States. She collaborated with activists like Harry Belafonte and met influential figures like President John F. Kennedy, all while using her music to champion the cause of freedom and equality. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Rebecca Rebecca is a mama of two from the UK, now living in Sweden with her Swedish husband. Rebecca and I met after Rebecca contacted me to be her Spiritual Midwife here in Stockholm, Sweden. At our first meeting we discussed her previous traumatic hospital birth and how this time she was considering free birthing as she didn't really want to go back to the hospital, but this was fully 100% aligned with Rebecca and not something that her husband was happy about. So we came to the conclusion that home birth with a registered midwife for safety was the way to go. As I am no longer a registered midwife after leaving Australia and moving back to Sweden, I helped Rebecca find a registered Swedish home birth midwife who carry medications and can provide that extra medical assistance in the rare chance that Rebecca or her baby needed it and I would assist Rebecca as her Spiritual Midwife, emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. With the presence of her husband, me and the other home birth midwife, Rebecca birthed her baby peacefully in her birth pool at home after a few days of prodromal labour. Both Rebecca and her husband were amazed at how peaceful and calm her birth was compared to her first hospital birth. And I feel so very blessed to have been invited into her home to sit with her at the birth altar. Curious about Rebecca? Find her on instagram as @rebecccaunderwood Now this redemptive physiological home birth experience that Rebecca had sparked an interest in her in becoming a sacred space holder for birth herself, which you hear us mentioning in the episode. And she is now applying to join the September Cohort of The Spiritual Midwife Mentorship Program. And I couldn't be more proud, honored and excited for her to join. Here is some feedback from one of my mentee's: To be a sacred space holder one must be a clear channel- this is not some woo-woo or foo-foo lingo. It's the truth. This requires a full on excavation of our cellular imprints, lineage traits, collective wounding; a house keeping effort that leaves no crack nook or cranny untouched. I have to be conscious of what I am bringing into that holy sacred vast and powerful portal that is birth. Every thread of energy matters. That means every intent, thought, action, word, and resonance. Every drop matters. So we unearthed Herstory, our red thread lineage, our own birth imprints, our blood rites or first menarche, our own birth portal experiences, our relationship to our bodies, sacred yoni's, sexuality and more. The container set and held is solid and deep. We get to be witnessed by a cohort of vetted sisters that have agreed to also take the plunge. We listen to each other with our full hearts. We get to be witnessed as we unravel and weave ourselves back together. This mentorship is most certainly not a “doula” training. Oh no. It is a soul calling. It requires 100% commitment to yourself, your future self and the women within the cohort. It is a reclamation of the Divine Feminine. It is a re-membering of the Matriarch. It is healing the collective Witch and Sister wound and so much more. If you would like to know what liberation looks, feels and tastes like; if you want to be a part of the true healing needed so desperately within humanity on our planet today; if you wish to serve at the birth altar or anywhere within its sphere- women's circles, preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, our blood rites, then I invite you to lean in. Anna has set a container that can hold you, wherever you may be along the path. If you feel the call, it's time to answer. Thank you so much Emily for sharing your experience of the mentorship with us. And yes, it's time to answer. The doors for the September intake are open. If you felt moved by this mentees words and feel a resonance and a yes then don't hesitate to apply to join us. Find All Links & Resources here: www.thenaturalbirthcourse.com/links
