In episode 33 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Emerson Matsuuchi the designer of Century: Spice Road, Century: Eastern Wonders, Century: A New World and the Golem Editions published by Plan B Games. Emerson talks about one lighting in a bottle game Century: Spice Road, plus designing two follow up games that were both standalones as well as could be combined into a heavier weighted game. This design challenge was something that was both difficult and rewarding for him. See how he introduced new players to popular mechanics in his Century games. Featuring: Emerson Matsuuchi - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host
We love playing games in-person! But sometimes you want to scratch that board-gaming itch for a few minutes in the middle of the workweek. Or during a "break." Or, well, all the damn time. Playing asynchronously on Board Game Arena lets you do just that...a lot. Just don't tell our bosses. Our BGA play pals Emerson Matsuuchi (designer of the Century series, Specter Ops, Reef, and the upcoming Foundations of Rome) and Jess Yi (frequent Going Analog contributor) join Christina and Shoe to gab about Board Game Arena vs. Tabletop Simulator, which games work best on the platform, and whether we can learn how to play (and enjoy) an entire game online without ever reading the rules. Our topics this episode: Jess (contributor): Board Game Arena vs. Tabletop Simulator Christina (host): Which games are better on Board Game Arena, and which are worse? Emerson (guest): Our experiences playing "blind" on Board Game Arena
We're back from our two week hiatus talking about GenCon. We get back into our regular programming with Century: Golem Edition published in 2017 by Plan B Games. We've never played Century: Spice Road AND this is our first Emerson Matsuuchi (the designer) game, so come find out what we think! Post your comments to Twitter/Instagram @FirstTurnCast or email us at firstturntabletop@gmail.com. Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe! Until next week, play more games!
Emma and Gil welcome Emerson Matsuuchi back to the show to discuss his experience designing the Century game series, and what it's like designing 3 "mixable" games. SHOW NOTES 0m37s: We last heard Emerson as a guest on Ludology 106 - Hide and Seek. 1m01s: In addition to the Century series, Emerson has designed Reef and Foundations of Rome. 1m45s: When there's no pandemic raging around the world, Gil runs a playtest group in New York City. Emma and Emerson were both members before they moved away. 4m31s: Ah, the classic sitcom misunderstanding. 8m12s: A list of cards currently banned in Magic: The Gathering tournament play. 11m17s: Bruges 13m03s: Dominion: Second Edition 14m11s: You can watch Emma appear on Table Takes on Gen Con's Twitch channel. 26m56s: The Betrayal family of games. 29m14s: An API (application programming interface) is a software interface that allows programmers to allow various computer programs and other devices to talk to each other. 31m27s: In writing, "pantsing" means writing by the seat of your pants - in other words, not "plotting," or planning out your story in advance. 40m58s: Wingspan 46m24s: More information about Jones Theory, which suggests that gamers can optimize their collection by only collecting the "best" game of each genre or type. 47m40s: ZineQuest, a Kickstarter initiative for creators to launch small RPGs in zines, ran for the month of February. We discussed it with Jeeyon Shim in Ludology 244 - Games Brought to Life. 48m32s: Source code control, or version control, is a way for computer programmers to store all iterations of their code, so they can easily switch between older and newer versions of their programs, and integrate revisions to code with other people on their team. As Emma mentions, some code-savvy board game designers use version control systems like Git to track different versions of their games. 49m47s: We mention legendary board game designers Reiner Knizia and Uwe Rosenberg, and their games Medici, Medici: The Card Game, Caverna, Agricola 52m39s: Emerson mentions Runewars, Star Wars: Legion, Wings of War, and Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. For a detailed history of these games, check out Biography of a Board Game 210.5 - Wings of War. 56m26s: Tom Lehman is dividing his expansions for Race for the Galaxy into several different arcs, which are not meant to be mixed. 57m54s: Eric Lang's tweet that Emerson mentions. 1h00m48s: Emerson's website, Twitter, and Facebook.

Another round about the sun is complete, at least for those who acknowledge that sort of thing. We discuss Specter Ops by Emerson Matsuuchi and Plaid Hat Games. In this deduction game, you play as Hunters guarding a secret base or as the Agent sent in to discover the secrets. The Agent tracks her moves in secret and the other players try to locate and kill the agent using unique player powers and a cool car. This is similar the Scotland Yard in game play, but in a nifty scifi universe.

Recently, I got to talk with Emerson Matsuuchi of Nazca Games. I've met Emerson twice now, once at Origins and once at Gen Con. For those that haven't had the pleasure of meeting Emerson, let me attest that he is the nicest person in the board game industry. And he makes great games. In the podcast, we talk about what it is like having Plaid Hat Games publish your design. We also talk about the companion app for Dead of Winter that Emerson is working on. The Crossroad Cards are voiced acted, which is so cool.
In our thirtieth episode, Quinten and Aaron are joined by Colby Dauch and Isaac Vega of Plaid Hat Games and Emerson Matsuuchi of Nazca Games. We all talk about the games we have been playing lately, including the upcoming Ashes from Plaid Hat Games. We don't do a formal review this episode, but interview Colby, Emerson, & Isaac, asking them about their publishing background, their creation of Specter Ops and Ashes, and we had a ton of listener questions. Then we quizzed them on their knowledge of Canada in our trivia game, Know Your Neighbour to the North. This episode is sponsored by Tasty Minstrel Games & Secret Base Games

We are very proud of our strict editorial standards here at SVWAG. Among them is our firm stance on Monty Python references, which are very firmly circumscribed. Philosophers are mentioned all the time, but never the song; and similarly we discuss Mozart here (in two different media!) without any kind of passing gesture to his decomposition. People have tried to smuggle in other references to the show, but those responsible have been sacked.Games Played Last Week:01:34 -Dice Hospital: ER--Emergency Roll (Matthew Dunstan and Brett J.
