How should we be with each other? The traditional school might suggest that we should show respect and expect support....but what are the pros and cons of such a worldview? And is it really as straightforward as this? Today we dig into the ethos or culture that we might find in the traditional "security-minded" classroom. And then, in the second half of the show, we discuss how the learning spaces in a school can work for or against learning. Join us and let us know your take! Theory Meets Practice: A Podcast for Teachers

Today we will continue discussing Lisa Lowe's amazing text Intimacies of Four Continents. This episode is part two in a two-part series on Lowe. In this episode we will think about the role education plays in the British imperialist strategy.Questions to consider: What is the role of education in imperialism? When colonizers set up their system of education, what are they educating people in? Is it still practiced this way today in school we when educate our students? In this episode we reference Jamaica Kincaid's "Upon Seeing England for the First Time", Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, and bell hooks' Teaching to Transgress.Support the show (https://theorymeetspracticepod.blogspot.com/)

Teaching with Tenderness Toward an Embodied Practice with Becky Thompson Ph.D. Teaching with Tenderness follows in the tradition of bell hooks's Teaching to Transgress and Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, inviting us to draw upon contemplative practices (yoga, meditation, free writing, mindfulness, ritual) to keep our hearts open as we reckon with multiple injustices. Teaching with tenderness makes room for emotion, offers a witness for experiences people have buried, welcomes silence, breath and movement, and sees justice as key to our survival. It allows us to rethink our relationship to grading, office hours, desks, and faculty meetings, sees paradox as a constant companion, moves us beyond binaries; and praises self and community care. Tenderness examines contemporary challenges to teaching about race, gender, class, nationality, sexuality, religion, and other hierarchies. It examines the ethical, emotional, political, and spiritual challenges of teaching power-laden, charged issues and the consequences of shifting power relations in the classroom and in the community. Attention to current contributions in the areas of contemplative practices, trauma theory, multiracial feminist pedagogy, and activism enable us to envision steps toward a pedagogy of liberation.
