The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hit the national stage right in the pocket of time where the mainstream was taking notice of what our scene was up to. This was partially due to the unique character of Ronnie Winter, who was able to break in and ride that wave and create opportunity for himself in a way that maybe only he could. Their debut album “Don't You Fake It” released in the summer of 2006 on Virgin Records and was certified gold by November of that same year. That meteoric rise brought along with it all that you could imagine of both positive and negative experiences. In this conversation, Ronnie does a great job of both seeing all the forces at play and owning his own part in it all. Haulix.com, in partnership with Heartsupport and the Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation, is proud to present: High Notes, a podcast about addiction and recovery in the music industry. Episode 008: Ronnie Winter of Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hit it big in 2006 with his band's debut single, "Face Down." That success propelled Ronnie to top of the alternative rock hierarchy, which came with its own set of problems. Today, Ronnie tells us about the real cost of living out your wildest rock and roll fantasies. He also shares how the love and compassion of his family saved his life, turning him from a self-proclaimed "death drinker" to a sober musician and father. High Notes is hosted by James Shotwell and edited by Landon Defever. The theme song was written and performed by the band You, Me, And Everyone We know. Nick Ferran created the High Notes logo. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, please seek help. The entire High Notes team is rooting for you, as are our incredible partners. Heartsupport exists to help those struggling with mental health (https://heartsupport.com/), and The Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation works with leading substance use disorder experts to support research that identifies the most urgent needs in the recovery community and raise funds to address them (https://globalrecoveryinitiatives.org/). "To me it means everything," affirmed Ronnie Winter, vocalist for Red Jumpsuit Apparatus on the significance of their latest single 'On Become Willing' reaching ten weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Christian Rock Charts. "We have been a band for so long and we had a lot of success in the beginning and we kind of nodded off for a while and now we've got a bit of success again. I grew up listening to bands and the great thing is most of the bands that I listened to are still playing so we've always wanted to be a band with longevity. We've always been professional musicians. I was classically trained in orchestra, so was my brother, and music has always been a career for us. We know we were not always going to be on top and we know we're not always gonna be the biggest band in the world but when it starts to go that way again it's nice, I'm not gonna lie."In the full interview Ronnie discusses the band upcoming tour of Australia and what they have in store for us, the response to latest album 'The Awakening' six months after its release, the early days of the band, the pressures of having a hit single on your first album and the desire to top that on future releases, the pros and cons of going independent as a band and the importance and effect of music as a weapon for awareness.
