What happens when the worst thing you've been afraid of actually happens—and you're still standing? In this episode of Typology, I sit down with songwriter Brad Warren—an Enneagram Six, a man in long-term recovery, a husband, a father, and someone who has walked straight through unimaginable grief and come out the other side with humility, humor, and hard-won wisdom. Brad is the kind of person who tells the truth without posturing, who can laugh at himself without diminishing himself, and who understands—deeply—that fear doesn't disappear just because you name it. But naming it does change the game. We talk about the Enneagram Six's instinct to scan the horizon for danger, to rehearse conversations that never happen, and to catastrophize not because they're weak—but because they care. A lot. Brad shares how losing a child forced him to face his worst fears head-on, and how recovery, faith, and accountability helped him learn the difference between imagined catastrophe and lived reality. There's a kind of quiet courage in the way he describes trusting God—not a God who's looking to smite him, but one who's patiently inviting him to rest. Along the way, we explore humor as both a survival strategy and a spiritual practice, the surprising connection between humility and laughter, and how Sixes learn to move from fear-driven vigilance to faith-filled presence. We also touch on marriage, loyalty, religious deconstruction with gratitude instead of bitterness, and the life-saving power of people who are willing to tell you the truth when your mind is lying to you. This episode is funny, tender, honest, and deeply human. It's about fear—but it's even more about trust. And what it looks like, day by day, to choose it anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Brad Warren Brad Warren is a Nashville-based songwriter and artist best known as one half of the hitmaking Warren Brothers. Max talks with host Scott Hamilton of WBT, Charlotte's News Talk radio, about the Statesville, North Carolina Citation 550 crash that killed NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and six others, then expands the conversation with a fresh technical finding and a practical training takeaway for pilots. While preparing for the short radio interview, Max revisited the ADS-B track and noticed something he hadn't seen anyone else write about: the altitude anomaly isn't merely a "jump," it's an impossible spike. The key number is stark. The ADS-B data shows a reported climb of 1,374 feet in 1.64 seconds, which implies a climb rate of almost 50,000 feet per minute—a rate that doesn't make sense for a Citation. Max's point is that this isn't a real aircraft maneuver; it's a data or sensor-path artifact. What makes it more compelling is what happens immediately beforehand: for 34 seconds, there were 14 ADS-B transmissions in a row with the exact same reported altitude. That kind of perfectly flat series is abnormal even if an aircraft is "steady," because pressure altitude reporting typically wiggles at least a little from sample to sample. Max lays out a simple, pilot-intuitive interpretation: the aircraft was likely climbing normally, but the altitude value feeding ADS-B froze for about 34 seconds and then unfroze, "catching up" in one big correction. If you treat that 1,374-foot change as occurring across the 34-second freeze rather than across 1.64 seconds, you get a climb rate around 2,200 fpm—entirely plausible for a departing Citation. About 20 seconds after the correction, the aircraft turned back toward the airport. Max also notes there is audio where a pilot announces on CTAF they are returning because they were "having issues," and he believes those "issues" were likely altimeter/altitude-related rather than a direct cause of the crash. From there, he turns the discussion into something useful for any pilot: how altitude gets measured, encoded, and transmitted—and what kinds of failures can create misleading outputs. In the Citation 550, there are multiple static ports feeding pilot-side and copilot-side instruments, plus potentially additional static sources feeding backups. Depending on the configuration, ADS-B altitude can be sourced through a blind encoder tied to the static system, an air data computer, or an encoding ("coding") altimeter common in older round-gauge aircraft. The operational point: pilots might see one thing on their instruments while the transmitted pressure altitude shows something else—or the opposite—depending on where the fault lives. Max then shifts to the accident sequence on return. Regardless of what prompted the turnback, he argues the crash itself likely occurred on short final for a different reason: visual illusions in rain and degraded visibility. The aircraft struck the approach lighting system short of the runway threshold, which is exactly the kind of outcome that can happen when pilots subtly, unknowingly fly a shallow or low path while "going visual." He emphasizes that we don't yet know the cause with certainty, but absent evidence of an engine failure on short final, illusions are a credible explanatory bucket—and one pilots can learn from immediately. The primary illusion he highlights is water refraction. Rain on the windshield can make the horizon appear lower than it is, which creates the sensation of being higher than you really are—leading to an unconscious nose-down correction and a lower-than-intended glidepath. He also cites guidance that rain, mist, and limited slant visibility reduce and distort visual cues during the instrument-to-visual transition, exactly when pilots are most vulnerable to subtle errors. These effects are also documented in Flight Safety Foundation's ALAR "Visual Illusions" briefing note, which specifically calls out rain-on-windshield refraction and the way rain can change the apparent intensity/brilliance of approach lighting. Max closes with a concrete "do this next time" list. First, if you accept a visual in marginal conditions, load the ILS and use it to back up the visual—it would have shown a low path before contact with approach lights. Second, he discusses a tech-forward defense: using Garmin visual approaches (the NTSB recovered a Garmin GTN 750 from the wreckage) and tools like Pathways in synthetic vision to help maintain a stable vertical picture. But he adds a blunt warning that pilots routinely get wrong: Garmin visual approaches do not guarantee terrain clearance, and in hilly terrain or limited visibility they can route you into terrain unless you've validated them in good conditions. The takeaway is simple: when your eyes can lie, disciplined cross-checking—and knowing the limitations of your tools—is what keeps you off the lights and on a safe path to the runway. On this week's edition of Next on the Tee, I'm thrilled to welcome back two extraordinary guests who continue to inspire, educate, and elevate everything they touch. First up is one of the most remarkable people I've ever met —Olympic Gold Medal Figure Skater Scott Hamilton. If there was an award for the greatest person on the planet, Scott would have won it for the last 40 years in a row. His life is a masterclass in perseverance. From battling brain cancer since birth, to pushing through years of unexplained health challenges, he rose to capture the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal and become one of the most beloved voices in sports broadcasting. Scott joins me to talk about his fantastic annual event, Scott Hamilton & Friends, benefiting the incredible work of the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation. We dive into the star-studded lineup (including several Classic Rock stars), the mission behind his fundraising, and the impact his foundation continues to make. We also look ahead to February, when Scott returns to the NBC broadcast booth for the Winter Olympics in Italy, marking his 10th Olympic Games on the microphone—tying the legendary Dick Button. Scott shares what a day in the life of an Olympic commentator is like, how he prepares, and what to expect from a U.S. figure skating team loaded with medal contenders including Ilia Malinin, Alysa Liu, Isabeau Levito, and Amber Glenn. Scott also takes us inside key moments from his own career—from finishing dead last in his early competitions, to handling Olympic pressure, to the humbling conversation with the Ohio Governor about “Hometown Hero Syndrome,” which brought powerful perspective during his post-Gold whirlwind. We wrap with some fun stories about his guitar collection and his experience at Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp. Then we transition back to golf with one of the most innovative minds in the game—Terry Hashimoto, Co-Developer & Founder of Swing Balance and BodiTrak Golf, and Founder of Ai Sensor & ProScreen Ai. Terry has been a dominant figure in Canadian golf for decades, a Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame inductee, and one of the industry's most sought-after experts in biomechanics, balance, and golf technology. Terry updates us on the groundbreaking work he's doing in the AI space, including how the Ai Sensor app can “revitalize” an 11-year-old BodiTrak mat using a simple iPhone connection. We break down what golfers are actually seeing in those videos, how Lidar technology helps diagnose dysfunctional movement patterns, and how instructors can use normative values—based on age, height, gender, and weight—to create customized recovery and movement protocols for all 11 joints from head to ankle. We also dive deeper into weight shift, proper trail-leg loading, and how golfers can adjust when dealing with physical limitations like arthritis, old injuries, or—like in my case—ankle replacement surgeries. Terry shares practical, eye-opening ways players can compensate for mobility loss and still play great golf through smarter movement patterns. It's an inspiring, insightful, and energizing episode featuring two world-class individuals who continue to push boundaries in their respective arenas. Thank you for pressing play. Where golf legends live…and your game gets better.

Every Mile Matters: Turning Triathlon Training Into Cancer Triumph by Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D https://www.amazon.com/Every-Mile-Matters-Triathlon-Training/dp/B0FJQ2Q98P Everymilematters.com Three sports. Two cancer diagnoses. One unbreakable spirit. At age 55, Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., crossed the finish line at Ironman Florida - a grueling triathlon and the crowning achievement of his endurance sports journey. Just weeks later, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He fought through treatment, recovered—and was hit again. This time, it was Stage 3B colorectal cancer. In Every Mile Matters, Dr. Reynolds shares how the physical fitness, mental fortitude, grit and resilience developed through triathlon and marathon training became his greatest weapons in the fight for his life. The Long Island resident didn't just apply his athletic mindset—he relied on it. Each round of radiation became a daily workout. Each chemo session, a test of strategy and strength. And every setback, an opportunity to dig deeper, endure and win. This is a powerful story of transformation, of turning pain into purpose and struggle into strength. Reynolds explores the emotional and spiritual shifts that come with surviving cancer—alongside practical tools for mindset, wellness, and long-term recovery. Perfect for athletes, cancer survivors, caregivers, and anyone facing adversity, Every Mile Matters is an uplifting, unforgettable tribute to the grit that carries us through finish lines—and the fights that matter most. “Every Mile Matters is a triumph of heart and soul in battling the demons of cancer. Jeffrey Reynolds has captured each defining moment of his cancer journey with honesty, passion, and remarkable clarity. Through his story, he teaches us powerful life lessons - and more importantly, how to live them daily. His defining moments at the IRONMAN finish line gave him the strength to fight on. His resilience, vulnerability, and relentless spirit remind us that the human will is stronger than any diagnosis. This book isn't just about surviving cancer - it's about reclaiming life and helping others to do the same. A must-read for anyone facing adversity or seeking inspiration to rise above it.” - Mike Reilly, Voice of IRONMAN and author of Finding My Voice “Dr. Jeff Reynolds' book is an important one for everyone, but especially for those who have been given “the diagnosis” that changes your life forever. I feel strongly that we are given 3 choices when going through a period of challenge or suffering. Succumb, Adapt, or Evolve. Jeff took the Evolve route and it has changed his life for the “BEST-ER.” Taking charge of your life is a choice, and he represents that greatest choice in this book.” - Scott Hamilton, Olympic Gold Medalist and cancer survivor.
Scott Hamilton is one of the most recognizable and decorated figure skaters in the world — an Olympic Gold Medalist and four-time World Champion who has earned more than 70 titles and honors, including inductions into both the U.S. Olympic and World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. His journey, however, goes far beyond the ice. In 1997, Scott was diagnosed with testicular cancer — just 20 years after losing his mothe to cancer. In the years that followed, he battled three brain tumors with the same courage and resilience that defined his skating career.Today, Scott channels that spirit into his mission off the ice — raising awareness and funding for cancer research and patient support through the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation.Download my FREE Coaching Beyond the Scoreboard E-book www.djhillier.com/coach Download my FREE 60 minute Mindset Masterclass at www.djhillier.com/masterclassDownload my FREE top 40 book list written by Mindset Advantage guests: www.djhillier.com/40booksSubscribe to our NEW YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@MindsetAdvantagePurchase a copy of my book: https://a.co/d/bGok9UdFollow me on Instagram: @deejayhillierConnect with me on my website: www.djhillier.com

What's up, dudes? It was a special based on a seminal album of the ‘80s holiday seasons! Yes, Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu are with me to talk “A Very Special Christmas Party." Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and more celebrate with Olympians.Unfortunately, the beginning is cut off, so it's unclear how the special started. Arnold and some Olympians discuss his singing, and Barbara Mandrell recounts playing soccer, talking to a 50m freestyle swimming gold medalist. Next, DeVito and Arnold work out with some athletes. Randy Travis then tells us he thinks of food at Christmastide and sings "Winter Wonderland."Immediately following that, Susan Saint James tells us of Mark Arrowood kindness, and Mike Tyson talks basketball. Scott Hamilton and an Olympian ice skate together, and we see the entire group in church for a special reading by JFK, Jr. Finally, at dinner, everyone goes around the table lighting a candle representing their Christmas wish. Oh, and Santa shows up!"Silent Night?" Check. "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town?" Got it. Actual songs from the album? Nope. Not really. So grab your sweater, light a candle, and make wish to this episode on “A Very Special Christmas Party!"
