FROM THE VAULT: In this classic clip, former England international and Premier League striker Jermain Defoe joins the lads to break down the fine margins that define elite goal scorers. Widely regarded as one of the most natural finishers of his generation, Defoe reflects on his early days at West Ham, where he learned crucial lessons from club legend Ian Wright.Defoe reveals the specific training ground drills that shaped his movement in the box, including a brutal but effective method Wright used to improve his timing and composure. He explains why most young forwards make the same costly mistake—arriving too early—and how mastering movement and patience can dramatically increase goal-scoring chances. The conversation also touches on modern strikers like Erling Haaland, the evolution of the game, and how Defoe began transitioning into coaching at Tottenham's academy.Since this episode was recorded, Defoe has taken the next step in his journey and is now the manager of Woking—making this a fascinating look back at the early ideas and influences shaping his approach to management today. If you like this clip, you can catch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/YI4YecuoXP8 ChumbawambaFor more Peter Crouch: Twitter - https://twitter.com/petercrouch Therapy Crouch - https://www.youtube.com/@thetherapycrouch For more Chris Stark Twitter - https://twitter.com/Chris_StarkInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisstark/For more Steve Sidwell Twitter - https://twitter.com/sjsidwell Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14 #PeterCrouch #ThatPeterCrouchPodcast Hosted on Acast. Daniel Defoe wasn't just a novelist — he helped forge Britain itselfDaniel Defoe is remembered as the author of Robinson Crusoe — but that legacy hides a far more dangerous, politically explosive truth. Long before his novels reshaped literature, Defoe was shaping nations. In this episode of History Rage, Paul Bavill is joined by historian Marc Mierowsky, Fellow and Lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne, to rage against the idea that Defoe was “just” a novelist. Instead, we uncover Defoe as a government propagandist, intelligence agent, and covert operator, working at the very heart of early British state power.Marc reveals how Defoe:Operated as a political fixer and spy for Robert HarleyBuilt one of Britain's earliest nationwide intelligence and propaganda networksInfiltrated Scottish politics during the crisis years before the 1707 Act of UnionManipulated religious divisions, rebellion, and public opinionHelped sabotage organised resistance to the Union of England and ScotlandThis is a story of dirty tricks, espionage, pamphlet warfare, and political manipulation, all carried out by a man later celebrated as a literary pioneer. It also raises uncomfortable questions about state power, surveillance, and whether the foundations of modern Britain were laid through persuasion — or coercion. If you think you know Daniel Defoe, this episode will leave you furious, fascinated, and questioning everything.About the guestMarc Mierowsky is Fellow and Lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne, specialising in Restoration and early eighteenth-century literature, politics, and espionage. The debates around sovereignty, identity, and union that rage today were already burning in the early 1700s — and Defoe was pouring fuel on the fire. This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in:British historyScottish independence and the Act of UnionEarly modern espionageThe hidden political origins of the novelPropaganda, intelligence, and state powerAbout History RageHistory Rage is the podcast that smashes historical myths and takes cherished assumptions out back and wrecks them. Most people know Daniel Defoe as one of the great writers in the history of English literature. But the author of Robinson Crusoe was much more than that. A rabble rousing pamphleteer and erratic entrepreneur, in the early years of the eighteenth century Defoe also became an undercover political operative. Defoe's career as a spy intersected with a huge moment in British history when the Act of Union between England and Scotland was being planned in 1706. Today's guest, the historian Marc Mierowsky, revisits this time in today's episode – analysing a series of events that were crucial to the genesis of Great Britain Marc Mierowsky is the author of A Spy Amongst Us. Show notes Scene One: July 1706. The Cockpit in Whitehall. The Scottish and the English commissioners finally settle on the terms of the treaty for the Act of Union. Scene Two: 23 October 1706. Edinburgh. The treaty has been sent north - it is being debated in the Scottish parliament -- and a riot breaks out. Defoe is a witness to the disorder. Scene Three: December 1706. The west of Scotland. Defoe deploys agent John Pierce to infiltrate the Hebronites. Memento: Daniel Defoe's familiar letters.
