Russ Kazmierczak has carved out a unique niche in the indie comics scene as the creator of Amazing Arizona Comics, a locally-focused superhero universe that blends satire with Southwest sensibilities. Since launching the series in 2010, Russ has produced over 40 self-published mini-comics featuring characters like Speed Cameron and Cactus Boy who battle villains inspired by Arizona politics, culture, and history. When not creating comics, Russ is an active presence at local art events, frequently tabling at First Friday art walks and comic conventions throughout the Southwest. Fans can find his work on his website, amazingarizonacomics.com, follow him on Instagram @amazingarizonacomics, or meet him in person at his regular workshops at Drawn to Comics in Glendale.Support the show

On the show this week, I talk to Russ Kazmierczak, the writer and artist behind Amazing Arizona Comics. Russ also created and hosts Phoenix Tonight, a late night talk show, and the Stuck in Traffic podcast. The man likes to stay busy. We recorded this the weekend before Phoenix Comicon, which we were both going to, and we’re both proud nerds, so we talk a fair amount about that. Also, apologies to Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore’s hotpants. Episode 12 of On the Grid is yours now to listen to. But to do the episode full justice, you should listen sometime after the evening news. That's because we have Russ Kazmierczak, host of Phoenix Tonight, the Valley's live, local, late night talk show, produced and performed monthly at Space 55 in downtown Phoenix. He's been behind the desk (just like we've been behind the mic) for a year now, and has brought a slew of Arizona A-listers to the studio. So let the evening shade take its course and enjoy some late night comedy with us. Oh and, lover's of comic books take heed -- Russ, has been producing his own comic book for a while now. So, we'll be dipping our toes in that pool, too!
