What if you could re-imagine schooling to be student-centered? Build from the ground up? That's what Connect Academy did when it was given carte blanche to re-imagine schooling for students in the Poway District. It re-imagined: How we organize learning experiences, by making them interdisciplinary, and community focused. How we organize learners, by making classes mixed grade level, and inclusive of all abilities. How we organize the school day, by creating extended blocks of time, and project-based opportunities. How we CONNECT students, by connecting them meaningfully in daily advisories, and homerooms. Connect Academy isn't some fancy prep school built for elite families that live in the Hollywood Hills; it's a public, inclusive school built for kids of all backgrounds, nationalities, and socio-economic status. Learn more about their journey from learning experience designers/teachers Joe Gizzo and Karen Rogers, and you can build in these student-centered elements in your classroom or school. Eric Kunsman and I talk about his work, Fake News Archive Project: A Historical Archive of the Donald J. Trump Presidency. Eric is looking for people interested in the next election, and any archive enthusiasts, to search through his screen captured collection of news headlines from the past almost four years and to highlight, through your own social media, the stories that were impactful to you but, because of the overwhelming news cycle, may now be lost to history. Here is his description of the work: This is my approach at recording history in the tumultuous times we live in and a historical approach to looking at the Presidency of Donald J. Trump and his claim of “Fake News.” These images are to serve in a historical context and not as a political statement. This project started the day after Election Day and will continue until (TBD.) I started by imaging only CNN due to the President's verbiage and quickly realized I needed other major news sources as a comparative measure. The use of multiple news sources serves as a barometer and allows the viewers to view this in its historical context. You can learn more about this work at: https://www.fakenewsarchiveproject.com Share the Fake News: UnGlued Re-Broacast News Event here: https://fb.me/e/1DTe7wR2b Eric's Website: https://www.erickunsman.com Eric's Email: eric@erickunsman.com Eric T. Kunsman (b. 1975) was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. While in high school, he was heavily influenced by the death of the steel industry and its place in American history. The exposure to the work of Walker Evans during this time hooked Eric onto photography. Eric had the privilege to study under Lou Draper, who became Eric's most formative mentor. He credits Lou with influencing his approach as an educator, photographer, and contributing human being. Eric holds his MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and holds an MS in Electronic Publishing/Graphic Arts Media, BS in Biomedical Photography, BFA in Fine Art photography all from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. Jane Szabo is a Los Angeles based fine art photographer, with an MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Her work investigates issues of self and identity. She is the author of the upcoming book ‘Your Mighty Inner Healer', a certified Anusara Yoga Teacher, Shamanic Practitioner, a certified QRA™ Practitioner, and a landscape painter. She holds a certificate in Ayurvedic Living Nutrition and a BAA in Photographic Arts. Naty's work and passion are anchored in the awareness that every breath and every action are an opportunity to transform. She offers classes and workshops to awaken into sacredness, come back into alignment of body, mind and soul through deep reverence. I recently met Naty at a Sacred full moon ceremony where she walked us through a yoga practice, some meditation with deep belly breathing and then she took us through a guided spiritual journey. I'd never done one like this and it was a pretty cool experience. I missed a good chunk of the journey that everyone else got, as I kinda fell asleep. But according to Naty that's what my body needed at that time. Elizabeth Moss is dedicated to recognizing Maine’s role in American Art. She opened her gallery in 2004 after completing a master of art's program in museum studies and curatorial research at George Washington University. While in Washington she worked at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden and was a member of Zonta International and a founding member of the Smithsonian Young Benefactors. In 2010, she founded the nonprofit arts organization the Maine Museum of Photographic Arts and was its Executive Director from 2010- 2014 and today heads the Advisory Board. In 2013, she was a finalist in Maine Family Business Awards for Elizabeth Moss Galleries and the gallery was named one of the top 500 Galleries in North America by Blouin International's website ArtInfo. She is also an active member of the Women's Executive Forum. As director of Elizabeth Moss Galleries, she has exhibited at international art fairs in NYC's 28th Street Armory and Boston's AD20/21 at the Cyclorama. Artworks from her gallery have been included in the Art in Embassies program and are in the corporate collections of LL Bean, Acadia Insurance and Maine General Hospital and countless private collections in the US, France, Saudi Arabia and Finland. Click to tweet: .@emossgalleries is sharing her story to inspire you on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/227 #inspiration Playing Small Moment At the start of her business, Elizabeth was told by two well-known gallery owners that she should move to a more popular area. Elizabeth knew that she would probably flourish in a lofty place away from the strip mall she was in, but stayed put. It may not have been glamorous, but she wouldn’t have survived if she had followed their advice. The Wake Up Call In 2010, a client inquired about a painting that had been in their family a long time. With Elizabeth’s love for art history, she took a look at the painting and saw the beauty shine through. Discovering that the painting had an incredible history, Elizabeth realized she has just as much to offer as everyone else outside of Maine. What Are You Excited About? Elizabeth wants to focus on branching outside of Maine, possibly nationwide. Current Business Challenge Elizabeth feels like there is a retraction in art market. With recent politics, there is a little uncertainty in where it’s all going and the unknown can impact a nonessential industry like art. Leadership Practice Elizabeth’s relationships with everyone she knows. Advice For Younger Self It’s okay if you’re not 100% every day. It’s ok to be 60-70% sometimes as the days you are 124% will even it out in the end. How to do more in less time.3. Become aware of how you spend your time and stay focused on meaningful tasks that move the needle.Entrepreneurship isn’t about being busy. It isn’t about more money, more connetions or more opportunities. Entrepreneurship is about freedom, flexibility and control. It’s about doing what you love and making a living doing it. It’s about designing the lifestyle you want and creating a business that fits into it. Yet, many solopreneurs do the opposite ~ they structure their life around their business. They put their clients first; somtimes even before their own family. Many are a slave to their business and can’t let go, can’t turn it off and can’t unplug.Let’s redefine your relationship with time. Let’s redefine how and where you chose to invest your attention. In this episode of Creative Photoshop we go into a different direction. For several years I have taught a class called Polaroid Creativity: Analog Input/Digital Output. Most recently I offered this class at Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA in conjunction with the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. It begins by making Polaroid Image Transfers and Emulsion Lifts with DayLab Printers and Copy System units. Students experiment with a variety of images and test the process. In classes in bygone years that would be the extent of our experiments. But now with scanners, printers, and most of all Photoshop these Polaroid materials can be enhanced, retouched, and enlarged, greatly expanding the artist’s expression. In this podcast we explore the Epson driver for scanning, discuss scanner settings and bring an Image transfer and Emulsion Lift into Photoshop for enhancement. We cover techniques for retouching; cleaning up borders, adding noise to enhance enlargement and adjustment layers to fine tune and correct our input. In our next episode we will explore some creative techniques combining these images with other sources and discuss output options. I hope you enjoy this episode. Creative Photoshop has now passed the 300,000 download plateau. I thank all of you who have been listeners. As always, I would love to hear from you with comments or suggestions.
