Small Biz Buzz hosts Crystal Heuft and Derek Harju are joined by Kristin Rowan, the director of marketing and public relations and sales for Square Egg Entertainment, the parent company for Phoenix Fan Fusion, who discusses how to pivot and adjust when a large-scale event suddenly faces an emergency. In this case, the coronavirus pandemic. When it started getting bad, everything changed when everybody started to realize this didn’t look like the seasonal flu, this was different. Rowan’s team started planning early when it became apparent that Phoenix Fan Fusion wasn’t happening. For her small, but mighty team of six, they didn't have a team of PR people or lawyers or all of those who can revise what they needed to do. Any revisions, any statements that they made came down to one person and long hours were experienced by all. “We pivoted from, ‘Hey. Here are all the guests we have coming out, and here's all the events we're planning and look at all this fun,’ to virtually nothing,” said Rowan. “When you're planning an event that gets postponed like that, we don't know which panelists are going to be available. We don't know which rooms we're going to have in the convention center. We don't know what guests are still going to be available. And their filming schedule was stopped the same as our schedule was stopped. So for us, it was not so much a pivot as it was a full stop.” Click play for more.
Meet the Guests of CoKoCon 2019 Join the gests of CoKoCon 2019: Alexander James Adams, Dee Astell, Mark Boniece, Emily Devenport, Gilead, Professor Sparks Here's a chance to meet all of CoKoCons our GoHs in one place, at one time. Alexander James Adams A professional musician of over forty years, Alec has always used magic in his performances to transform and inspire his listeners into states of being and realms of desire that leave them changed for the better. Using stories and songs of Antiquity, he creates places where the audience can find their unspoken secrets and address them with new inspiration. With twenty albums, a few spoken word stories and many collaborations with other musicians, Alexander applies transformational magic to his music in hopes of changing things that need to be changed. Heir to the music and legend of Heather Alexander, Alec performs her music and his own with a style that goes beyond reality and into the imagined. Dee Astell Dee Astell co-founded and co-runs the Arizona Penny Dreadfuls. She’s the Fashion Manager for Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention, ran the steampunk track at Phoenix Comicon and has been Steampunk Coordinator for many others. She runs maker workshops across the southwest. She chaired Westercon 70, serves on the board at LepreCon, Inc. and is a member of CASFS and WesternSFA Mark Boniece Mark has chaired 16 conventions in the Phoenix area and has lost count of the times he has volunteered in all areas of con running. He was Dealer Liaison and Hotel Liaison for Westercon 70. He's currently Chairman of CASFS and Vice President of WesternSFA. He has also served as a director and officer for several other fan groups in Arizona. Emily Devenport Nine of her novels were published in the U.S. by NAL/Penguin/Roc, under three pen names. Her short stories were published in Asimov's SF Magazine, the Full Spectrum anthology, The Mammoth Book of Kaiju, Uncanny, Cicada, Science Fiction World, Alfred Hitchcock, Clarkesworld, Longshot Island and Aboriginal SF, whose readers voted HER a Boomerang Award. She blogs at emsjoiedeweird.com. Gilead Growing up in the magical fairyland of Prescott, AZ—located in the Bradshaw Mountain range just west of Cimmeria, east of Barsoom and near the mines of Moria—Gilead spent his youth sketching the dragons, goblins and fairies who always surrounded him but whom, sadly, most other people couldn't see. He continues to travel between worlds to draw and paint on location in such places as Narnia, Hyborea and Central Arizona, usually after convincing the most beautiful women of those realms to take their clothes off for him. It's a tough gig. "Fantasy and science fiction are so strongly associated with the illustration of books that it confuses people to meet a fantasy artist who isn't an illustrator, but I got my fill of commercial art in the sign business. My style is realism with a heavy dose of whimsy. It's all in good fun. I don't take myself too seriously; I just like to make cool pictures." Now a retired sign painter and something of an environmentalist, Gilead likes to paint on recycled materials such as lumber, cabinet doors and old signs. "What I do take seriously is the environment and ways to make it better. My current focus is mostly on the social and environmental impact of making art with recycled materials." See more at https://www.facebook.com/GileadArt Professor Sparks Professor Sparks presents unique and spectacular high voltage shows, demonstrating some of the rare and unique electrical artifacts and apparatus he has been collecting for decades. By day a safety expert training OSHA compliance officers all across the U.S., Professor Sparks presents spectacular visual displays of high voltage arcs, sparks and bolts of electricity with a 500,000 volt Tesla coil and equipment from Ken Strickfaden's set for the 1931 Frankenstein, including the Cosmic Ray Diffuser, the Digital Disputer and the Nebularium, not to forget the 75,000 volt lightning screen. You know that thing when you turn a corner at a convention and see the booth display of a favorite artist? This happened to Richard at Phoenix Comicon and that artist was Derek Riggs! “Hmmm, that’s the guy who did all the best Iron Maiden album covers” you might be thinking. Yes, and not only that, Derek actually created Eddie, the monster from said covers. He was originally called “Electric Matthew” and had quite a different hairdo! Listen to this bonus episode and find out what famous recording studio Derek had good fortune to visit. You’ll also hear about times when Derek was kicked out of places by people who’d later regret it. You’ll find out that heavy metal albums weren’t Derek’s first covers. You could also buy his book, “Run For Cover - The Art Of Derek Riggs”, which we encourage! So, call him brilliant, call him wildly creative, but don’t call Derek Riggs “Dr. Death”! #horror #horrormovies #horrornerd #horroraddict #horrorjunkie #monsterkid #bmovie #scarymovies #monstermovie #podcast #chewingthescenery #zombies #zombie #VHS #moviemonsters #freepodcast #denver #colorado #uptheirons #albumcovers #recordcovers #vinyl #nwobhm #eddietheed #albumcoverart #heavymetalart #ironmaiden #runtothehills #derekriggs #phoenixcomicon #comicon #phoenixcomicon2017

In this episode we met at 10 pm for the first of a four episode recording marathon. Guest stars are coming. News involves a woman that is hospitalized for using balloons in a sexual manner, a Harvard book that is discovered to be bound in human skin and an obese man hides 40 bags of heroin in his belly button. Then we discuss fetishes and why Phoenix is sick of them. We also answer more of the 800 random questions. Michael's versus segment is about the Phoenix Comicon (this will air several weeks after): meeting old school comicon celebrities versus new school guys and dressing up versus not dressing up. Laws Of Life is about how comedians shouldn't take pride in ruining their show and name for the sake of the 'joke' of bombing. Basically they shouldn't attack the audience because they are going through something personal.
