In Part 3 of the Purple Patch series on performance nutrition, Matt Dixon, along with leading performance nutritionist, Scott Tindal, lift the veil on nutrition and fueling with nutrition case studies around real-life Purple Patch athletes. The goal for all? To frame a smarter common-sense approach to nutrition and fueling in order to build a long-term platform of health and resilience. This final case study is centered around the elite amateur triathlete, Andy Williams. Like many triathletes, Andy is seeking top-level performance in all areas of his life, with his primary goal being an IRONMAN World Championship qualification. His first few attempts had been disastrous, but all-too-common for many multisport athletes. He's gone from GI distress from overconsumption to bonking because of underconsumption. Like many, prior to working with Purple Patch and FuelIn, Andy didn't have a grasp on his eating and fueling habits. He didn't know his sweat rate, body composition, amount of fuel he should be taking in, and what types of food he should prioritize around training and racing. This led to confusion and paralysis, dangerous experimentation, frustration, and poor results relative to training potential. With the guidance of Scott and Matt, Andy developed strategies around: His Baseline numbers - knowing exactly where he was starting from and where he needed to be Repeated testing and nutrition practice in stressful training situations to mimic hard race conditions Hot Water Immersion and/or Sauna protocols for heat acclimation Better organization and specificity around his eating and nutrient timing for energy management, hunger control, and body composition. In this discovery process, Andy upskilled his knowledge, felt empowered and confident during races, and achieved his goal of qualifying for both the 70.3 and IRONMAN World Championships. This work included no voodoo science, no magic elixirs, and no secrets. As you'll hear, the only requirements were a massive desire to learn, organization around habits, and repetitively applying that knowledge. 0:00-04:05 Welcome and Episode Introduction 04:06-07:40 Squaddie Update - Upcoming Events include a Discussion with Inside Tracker, a Live IRONMAN Florida Course Overview, and a public webinar on the topic, "So You Want to Do Your First IRONMAN." Is your inner child still hurting about fitness due to the way you were introduced to it? We often don't realize it, but how fitness was introduced to you as a child has a lot to do with your relationship with it today. To embrace a healthy relationship with fitness and identify what works best for you, you must first recognize that trauma and heal from it. In this episode of the Live Your Personal Best podcast, I speak with Malarie, an exercise physiologist who's worked in the fitness industry for a decade now. Listen in to learn the importance of moving your body moderately to keep it functioning and at your best health. Key Takeaways: How to approach fitness without weight loss as the primary reason. Exercise psychology – how exercise was introduced to you as a child shapes how you view it as an adult. Understanding that exercise can be unique to you – what do you like doing and how often you can do it? The importance of moderate body movements to maintain your body's function, decrease pain and stiffness, and managing your mental health. Episode Timeline: [2:34] Malarie shares her history with weight gain/loss and when she changed her perspective about fitness. [7:07] She explains childhood exercise trauma and how it can shape your adult fitness. [11:52] How to recognize what exercise you like and how often you can do it to achieve your fitness goals. [16:00] The types of people and levels of fitness that Malarie works with. Quotes: ·“Maybe people have a history of some type of trauma around exercise, how you were introduced to it can then go on to shape how you feel as an adult.”- Malarie [8:37] ·“Finding that connection between what you actually like doing versus what you feel you should be doing can be a good reframe in your head, and also recognizing how often you can actually do it.”- Malarie [12:42] Connect with Malarie: https://linktr.ee/thejockscientist Get your copy of Elite to Everyday Athlete: https://amzn.to/3ysSbqW Follow along at: https://www.instagram.com/liveyourpb/ Learn more about your ad choices. Show Notes:If you could sit down with someone who's played professionally in two different sports, what would you want to ask them about success? Maybe it's how they did it. Maybe it's the biggest struggles they went through. Maybe it's the attributes they've seen in the most successful in their sports. Or maybe you ask about stuff that most people don't see. On the show today we talk about all these things and more with our guest and learn just what it takes to become pro at two different sports.Paul Lasike is a New Zealand-born, USA international rugby player who currently plays professional rugby for the Harlequins Rugby club in the English Premiership League. Prior to joining the Harlequins, Paul played rugby for Team-USA and the Utah Warriors. Paul was the centre of Team USA's historic 30-29 victory over Scotland in 2018 – the country's first major win over a Tier One nation. He represented USA at the Rugby World Cup in Japan starting all four pool stage matches. Prior to his professional rugby career, Paul played running back and full-back for the Arizona Cardinals and later the Chicago Bears. Paul attended Brigham Young University and played both rugby and then football once NFL scouts came knocking. Paul is a dedicated husband and father, one of 10 children in an ethnic Tongan family, and his talents stretch beyond the sports field as he is also a talented musician. On the show today we discuss the following:Who is Paul and what does he do (4:10)Lessons learned from sports as a kid that continue to impact him today (11:29)Traits of those who play sports at the highest levels: obsession (20:38)Traits of those who play sports at the highest levels: confidence/ego (28:38)Life as a pro-athlete with a young family (39:53)What does it mean to him to be a Contender (50:46)How to learn more about Paul:Paul's Facebook PagePaul's Instagram PageTeam USA Rugby BioHarlequin Rugby BioAdditional Books, Individuals, or Items Discuss in the show:The USA vs. Scotland game (Full Match)The Chimp ParadoxHighland High School Rugby and Coach GelwixContact the Host: firstname.lastname@example.orgGiveaway: Sometime before the next episode is released, leave us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts and screen shot it. Does 10k Instagram followers make you pro climber? Are the new generation of pro's training differently? Do you live the everyday life of a pro? All these things are discussed by Tom and Rhos as they unpack their own habits and the habits they see in other professional climbers. This Ask Lattice follows a topic we have been discussing on our own Instagram and delves into the main differences between pros and beginners. This is not to say any habit is right or wrong and simply changing behaviours does equate to a performance short cut! Mike has been writing full-time about professional wrestling since 2004 when PWInsider.com was founded. He's interviewed hundreds of stars and legends from every aspect of professional wrestling, including The Ultimate Warrior, Sting, Eric Bischoff, Jesse Ventura, Rob Van Dam, Mick Foley, Ted DiBiase, Tommy Dreamer, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Kevin Sullivan, Stan Hansen, Abyss, Billy Robinson, Tully Blanchard, Taz, and many, many others. Prior to writing full-time, Mike worked for several years in management and production roles for the film and Broadway worlds, allowing him to bring a very unique point of view to professional wrestling as an entertainment property. A native New Yorker, Mike is proud to work seven days a week and spend endless hours writing, traveling, recording audio, conducting interviews, and watching every form of pro wrestling he can. Having a complete understanding of the financial system we've become accustomed to since birth is not only advantageous, but it's an absolute must. The gap between really understanding the impact and full gravity of inflation and living by a feeling or a suspicion is too wide to ignore. Nic Carter is an entrepreneur, investor, columnist and advisor in the Bitcoin crypto space. He's joining Tom today to break down some principle ideas and thoughts to help you at least research what you should be doing with your money, your government issued and government backed money. What's happening with crypto and NFTs isn't something you can ignore or sleep through. Bitcoin has been going strong for more than a decade. You have a moral obligation to yourself and to your family to at least understand how inflation works, why increasing assets is like theft of your dollar's value and how you can protect yourself and be part of the wealth redistribution in a way that benefits you more than harms you. SHOW NOTES: 0:00 | Introduction to Nic Carter 1:31 | Does Bitcoin Matter? 4:21 | What is Money? 8:52 | Creating Devalued Money 14:43 | Redistribution & Inflation of Assets 22:24 | Reacting to Inflation 27:54 | Japan's Stagflation 36:57 | Energy, Euphoria & Bitcoin 40:47 | Fiat Money Explained 45:10 | Do Research Money 49:16 | Bitcoin Value Vs Fiat Value 54:13 | Bitcoin, Digital Gold 57:52 | Value System by Design QUOTES: “Devaluing the monetary medium that we store our work and labor in is always redistributive. So it's effectively a way to reapportion societal resources from some group to another group.” [9:59] “there's a wealth effect whereby people feel richer, and then they spend more like if the value of your 401k goes a lot, goes up a lot, you're probably willing to buy that nice new car, if the value of your house goes up a lot” [16:23] “There's nothing that guarantees that public equity investors in the US are going to earn 7% every year for the rest of all time.” [31:38] “As an entrepreneur in the crypto space, and someone who allocates capital, my best hope is to sort of create the tools and the systems that regular folks can use to potentially escape a ruinous Fiat system.” [40:15] “The government cultivates an environment in which the dollar has value. They have certain tools to do that, one is tax policy...” [42:09] “The first thing is just not not accepting uncritically the narratives coming out of sort of our monetary elites in this country.” [49:06] Follow Nic Carter: Website: https://niccarter.info/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/nic__carter
Today's show welcomes back coach Michael Zweifel. Michael is the owner and head of sports performance for “Building Better Athletes” performance center in Dubuque, Iowa. Building Better Athletes focuses on building the athlete from the ground up by mastering the fundamentals of movement mastery, strength/power training, recovery modalities, and promoting ownership in athletes. Michael is also a team member of the movement education group, “Emergence”. He has been a frequent guest on this podcast, speaking on topics of perception-reaction, exploration in the weight room, creativity and more. As I've grown as a coach (and a human mover/athlete) it's been really enjoyable to experience sport, and movement in different ways. In working in a college weight room, it was also very interesting to pay attention to the defining characteristics of the best athletes. They weren't always the strongest, or even the fastest, but they could move and react incredibly well in context of their sport… and they loved to play. One of the things I've been enjoying doing recently, is coaching youth sports (5 year olds, to be exact) and it's a learning experience that impacts my philosophy, all the way up the chain into high level performers. With play and exploration at the core of athleticism and sport, why is it that the culture of the gym (and in many sports performance settings) completely the opposite? So much of modern sport acts like athletes are robots, a culture based on lines and whistles, and a perception of needing to do everything one particular way. On today's show, Michael Zweifel goes into a deep dive on how his warmups fit with the key characteristics of elite athleticism. He speaks on how he connects his warmups to core human instincts and needs, and talks about how to develop a love for movement and play that transcends organized sport play. On this episode of Le Down I spoke with Elite Runner and Marathoner, Elissa Legault. She's always loved running and even dabbled in triathlon at a very young age, and returning to the sport reunited her with her childhood coach to pursue the marathon. Despite the pandemic Elissa managed a half marathon and marathon personal best. If she keeps it up, an Olympic qualifier could be within her reach one day. In this episode we explore how that has taken place, and what the final result will be for the ruling elite if the working class is pushed too far.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/collapsepod)
