Earlier this week, our Industry All-Access (https://brewingindustryguide.com/subscription/) subscribers received in their email inbox this week's subscriber-exclusive article that Kate reported, parsing the latest industry economic data but reading beyond the surface for a deeper look at what's really going on. We've all read the hyperbolic clickbait articles out there about craft beer's demise, and for the first time in almost twenty years, we saw a net decline in operating breweries in the United States last year. But at the same time, we've been hearing anecdotally from a number of brewers such as Neil Fisher of WeldWerks, in episode 400, that they were growing despite the significant headwinds. This cognitive dissonance got us thinking about how data purport to tell certain truths, but that “truth” is limited by the nature of how data are collected. Craft beer in the United States is both big and small, but our primary sources of data address only the biggest channels of the craft-beer business, leading to distortions in perception that could potentially have damaging effects for craft beer as a whole. With that in mind, Kate sought out some answers to the questions we had—does this meta-narrative we've been reading have truth to it, does it accurately describe the reality that craft brewers are facing, do other data that suggest different or more varied truths, and what can we take away to build a fuller picture of the current state of craft beer? This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): G&D Chillers Elite 290 Micro-series line utilizes a natural refrigerant, features a more compact design with variable speed fans, and offers near-zero global warming potential. Anneke Lucas was born in Belgium and faced unimaginable trauma from a young age. At just six years old, she was tragically sold by her mother into a trafficking network that catered to European elites. Before this, Anneke experienced abuse at the hands of her family's cleaning lady, who later conspired with a relative to traffic her into an exclusive club where disturbing events took place. For years, Anneke endured severe abuse and torture, silenced by fear after witnessing the tragic fate of other victims. By the time she was 12, Anneke had survived some of the most horrific experiences imaginable. As a young adult, she lived in London, Paris, and New York before eventually settling in Los Angeles, where she began her healing journey through therapy, yoga, and meditation. Today, Anneke is the founder and Executive Director of Liberation Prison Yoga, a New York-based non-profit dedicated to supporting survivors. As a vocal advocate, she bravely shares her story—a powerful testament to resilience, hope, and the strength to heal. Munster Technological University is inviting experienced professionals to apply for the final places in its elite Cyber Innovate programme. The programme is designed to equip participants with the skills to launch and lead cybersecurity start-ups, strengthening Ireland's position as a cybersecurity innovator. Cyber Innovate is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27. Now in its second year, the programme also aims to address historical diversity imbalances in the cybersecurity sector. In its first year, five out of the 12 successful applicants were women, and the programme organisers are keen to see that trend continue. Ronan Coleman, Director of Cyber Innovate, said: "Most start-up programmes focus on commercialising a pre-existing idea. Cyber Innovate is different. From day one, participants dive into real-world challenges, engaging directly with industry leaders in financial services, technology, telecoms, agriculture, and smart maritime. They work alongside cybersecurity and IT professionals to uncover pressing problems they face, and design practical, high-impact solutions." As part of the programme, successful applicants receive a €38,000 tax-free scholarship, along with fees for a 10-month Postgraduate diploma. Students will be based full-time on site in the Rubicon Centre business incubator at MTU. "The goal of the scholarship is to give students the breathing space to learn and to fully commit to validating the opportunity for a cybersecurity startup," said Sarah O'Donovan, Programme Manager of Cyber Innovate. A key partner for the programme is Georgia Tech VentureLab, which specialises in the lean start-up I-Corps methodology for validating the commercial opportunity for a potential product or service. To date, I-Corps has led to 1,357 start-ups that have since raised a combined $3.16billion in funding. The first year of Cyber Innovate launched in September 2024 and is currently ongoing. Its students, organised into five teams, identified over 450 customer problems or needs, and narrowed that to 38 concepts before shortlisting to one project for each team to focus on. The student teams are currently working on prototypes, business models and business plans with the aim of raising funding for their start-ups this summer. Applications for the 2025/26 programme close on Monday 31 March, and further information is available at https://cyberinnovate.ie/. "The application process is simple: we want to encourage people from a variety of backgrounds to apply, even if they haven't worked in cybersecurity before now," said Ronan Coleman.

Caitlin Stryker grew up a railroad brat, never living in any city for longer than a few years as her father's railroading career kept the family on the move. With her gypsy spirit firmly in place, she splits time between the three cities she calls home: NYC, LA, and Vancouver, BC. She started her career in the performing arts as a ballet dancer performing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Young Performers Ensemble, where her love for emotional freedom was established. Caitlin was then scooped up by Elite modeling agency in Toronto, which fluidly led to her acting career in Film/TV. Her love of film has even put her behind the camera as she co-produced multiple shorts, and Award-Winning feature films, with her husband Bradley Stryker. In this episode we ‘get into it' with Caitlyn about: -Moving throughout childhood-Recreating identity-Stage and camera acting-Getting over stage fright and moreFollow Caitlyn on IG or visit her IMBD.
My guest on this episode of the podcast is William Deresiewicz, author of a number of books, most notably Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life, and the Substack newsletter Derisivist.Bill and I end up spending a fair amount of time discussing an as-yet-untitled essay of his that's forthcoming in Salmagundi, and at what I'd say are the two poles of it. On the one hand, it's a lament for the decline of the left, which he argues has made itself the enemy of cultural vitality. On the other hand, it's an initial sketch of what he calls the "not left," which is some kind of loose constellation of people (including Bill and me) who still take their policy bearings from the left but who feel profoundly alienated from its current cultural and institutional manifestations. He writes:"It comes to this: the left has made itself the enemy of the life force—of vitality, of eros. It fears it and it wants to shackle it. It feels, with a deep, instinctive revulsion, that it is incompatible with goodness, with morality. So it subordinates it to morality, or rewrites it in its terms. … The not-left, like the left in the 60s and 70s, is the locus of openness, playfulness, productive contention, experiment, excess, risk, shock, camp, mirth, mischief, irony, and curiosity. As opposed to solemnity, self-censorship, defensiveness, literalism, and prudery. The left is 'no'; the not-left is 'yes.' The left is 'post-,' the prefix of imaginative depletion. The not-left is 'neo-,' the sign of new beginnings."I thought of waiting to send this out until his essay was available, but I decided not to. Our conversation stands on its own, and it also spends a lot of time on other topics, including Bill's childhood in a modern Orthodox Jewish home, his early efforts to be a good boy and pursue a career in the sciences, his transition to English literature, and then his eventual break from academia. And much more. It's a great conversation. Bill and I have been consuming a lot of the same stuff over the past few years, and the result is a shared frame of reference that allows us to bounce and spark off each other in a pretty ideal way. You can feel us arriving at new ideas, and nuancing old ones, in the moment, which is what the interview-style podcast achieves at its best.Essays and podcast episodes we mention during the conversation, in addition to Bill's forthcoming essay, are:Last Boys at the Beginning of History: Thymos comes to the capitalby Mana AfsariWhy I Left Academia (Since You're Wondering): I didn't have a choice. This Day in Legal History: Lend-Lease ActOn March 11, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Lend-Lease Act into law, fundamentally reshaping U.S. foreign policy during World War II. The legislation empowered the President to provide military aid to countries deemed essential to American national security, even if they could not immediately pay for the supplies. This marked a decisive shift from the nation's prior isolationist stance, allowing Roosevelt to support the Allies without directly engaging in combat. Under the act, the United States sent over $50 billion in war materials to nations such as the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and China. The aid included weapons, vehicles, food, and other critical supplies, strengthening the Allied war effort against Axis forces. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill described the act as crucial to his country's survival, calling it "the most unsordid act in the history of any nation." The law also laid the groundwork for closer U.S.-Allied relations, ensuring American economic and military influence in global affairs. While many supported the act as a necessary step to combat fascism, isolationists in Congress criticized it as a step toward war. Their fears proved correct when Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 led to full U.S. involvement in the conflict. Lend-Lease remained in effect until September 1945, helping to shape the postwar world order. The program reinforced the role of the United States as the "Arsenal of Democracy," a term Roosevelt had coined to describe its industrial and military production for the Allied cause. The principles behind Lend-Lease also influenced future U.S. foreign aid programs, including the Marshall Plan. By prioritizing strategic alliances and military support, the act cemented America's role as a dominant force in international relations.U.S. Circuit Judge James Ho resigned from the Federal Judges Association (FJA) over its recent statement addressing rising threats, criticism, and violence against the judiciary. Ho, a Trump-appointed judge and potential Supreme Court nominee, objected to what he saw as a selective concern for judicial independence. The FJA, which represents over 1,100 federal judges, warned against "irresponsible rhetoric" and security risks but did not name specific cases or threats. The statement came amid increasing attacks on judges from figures like Elon Musk and Trump allies, particularly targeting those blocking conservative policies. FJA President Judge Michelle Childs cited growing threats, including intimidation and impeachment efforts, as challenges to judicial independence. Ho criticized the group for not issuing similar warnings when conservative justices, like Brett Kavanaugh, faced threats, arguing that defending only certain judges politicizes the judiciary. He announced his resignation at a Federalist Society event, framing his departure as a stand against perceived bias. The FJA did not respond to requests for comment.Fun fact about Judge Ho, he was sworn in to the 5th Circuit by Justice Clarence Thomas at a library owned by Harlan Crow. Longtime readers of Minimum Competence will remember I featured Crow in a column back in 2023:We've learned much about Crow over the past few weeks—as a friend and benefactor of Justice Clarence Thomas, a collector of Hitlerania and garden gnome versions of history's greatest monsters, and a holder of a “cashport” (I'm coining that term here) to St. Kitts and Nevis, another country that is well known as a tax haven. Some call them golden visas, but that's a euphemism intended to give the entire process the air of legitimacy. James Bond carries a golden visa, Harlan Crow buys a cashport.Trump-appointed judge quits judicial group over warning about threats | ReutersGolden Visas Let People Like Harlan Crow Keep Too Much Hidden (2)The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to Colorado's ban on "conversion therapy" for minors, brought by Christian therapist Kaley Chiles. Chiles argues the 2019 law violates her First Amendment rights by restricting her ability to counsel clients in line with her religious beliefs. Colorado officials maintain that the law regulates professional conduct, not speech. Lower courts upheld the ban, citing evidence that conversion therapy is harmful and ineffective. The Supreme Court's decision to take the case follows its recent pattern of ruling in favor of religious interests over LGBT protections. The Court previously declined to hear a similar case from Washington state, though conservative justices dissented. The case will be argued in the Court's next term, starting in October. The ruling could have nationwide implications, as over two dozen states have similar bans. The Court is also considering other cases on LGBT and religious rights this term, with decisions expected by June.US Supreme Court to hear challenge to Colorado gay 'conversion therapy' ban | ReutersWealthy U.S. colleges are ramping up efforts to fight potential tax increases on their large endowments amid growing Republican scrutiny. The Trump administration's recent decision to cut federal funding to Columbia University over alleged antisemitism is just one example of political pressure elite schools are facing. Universities like Harvard, Princeton, and MIT are intensifying lobbying efforts, with leaders traveling to Washington to protect their multibillion-dollar funds. Critics argue that these institutions, which already benefit from tax advantages, should not be allowed to accumulate vast wealth tax-free while tuition remains high. Some proposals in Congress seek to raise the current 1.4% endowment tax or expand it to include schools with smaller per-student endowments. Universities warn that higher taxes could reduce financial aid and deter donors, affecting students who rely on scholarships. The fight comes as Congress prepares for a major tax policy debate in 2025, with Republican lawmakers pushing for broader tax reform. Some smaller institutions, like Wabash College, fear they could be unfairly targeted despite having far fewer resources than elite schools. Meanwhile, top universities continue to brace for further financial and political attacks, with some implementing hiring freezes in response to federal funding threats.Wealthiest Colleges Fight to Protect Their Riches From Taxation This is a public episode. Oil and gas workers operate in extreme conditions, such as the Gulf and the Permian Basin, where the intense heat and high humidity create very hazardous conditions. You lose a lot of body moisture just surviving in those settings. Most of us know to take a drink of water when we're thirsty, but in those places, by the time you're thirsty, you're already at risk. Is there a better way to measure dehydration risk before it becomes a safety hazard? In this episode, I sit down with Jim Ryan, Chief Revenue Officer of Epicore Biosystems, to discuss a nifty wearable device that tracks sweat loss, sodium levels, and hydration needs in real time—helping prevent heat-related injuries before they happen. Elite athletes like Lionel Messi and Serena Williams rely on a sweat patch from Epicore to help them complete. This technology caught the attention of Chevron, who saw the potential to protect its industrial athletes (front line workers). It's been deployed across oil fields, refineries, mining and aviation sectors, changing the way companies monitor worker health and safety. Stuff that I didn't know: ✔️ Why sweat is as valuable as blood for real-time health tracking ✔️ The hidden dangers of dehydration—and why most workers don't recognize the symptoms ✔️ How Chevron partnered with Epicore to develop a rugged, industrial-grade wearable ✔️ The privacy-first approach to tracking hydration without monitoring individuals ✔️ What's next for wearables in industrial safety, from muscle fatigue monitoring to ketone tracking If you're in HSE, operations, or workforce safety, this episode is a must-listen. About the Guest Jim Ryan is the Chief Revenue Officer at Epicore Biosystems, the company behind this clever health monitoring technology. Jim has an extensive background in telecom, cybersecurity, and digital health, which is very useful indeed in bringing this kind of technology to the industry. Additional Tools & Resources

When the supernatural seeps into our world, it doesn't just leave behind fear—it can also leave sickness. From shadowy visitors to ominous dreams, some eerie paranormal encounters suggest that the price of witnessing the unknown may be paid in flesh and blood.IN THIS EPISODE: When the supernatural intrudes into our lives, it's not just our minds that are affected. We'll delve into a few bizarre cases where individuals fell gravely ill after brushes with the paranormal. Is it coincidence? Or something more sinister? And could these illnesses be due to the paranormal literally draining us of life? And while his wishes were granted, it came with a few hiccups along the way… mostly with his poor head. Suicide seemed improbable, leaving detectives baffled and family perplexed. Was it a crime of passion, an accident, murder… or truly suicide? In a similar case, just a few years later, in the serene countryside of Greenwich, New York, the lifeless form of Maggie Hourigan is found, floating in a tranquil pool, speculation runs rampant.
