In Matthew 15, Pastor Karl walks through two encounters that reveal how Jesus responds to very different kinds of people. The first is a confrontation with the Pharisees — religious leaders who had mastered looking clean on the outside while leaving their hearts completely untouched. Mark 7:1-30 1 Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,[a] holding to the tradition of the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.[b] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[c]) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips,     but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me,     teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' 8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” 9 And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother'; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.' 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”' (that is, given to God)[d]— 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.” What Defiles a Person 14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”[e] 17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?”[f] (Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” The Syrophoenician Woman's Faith 24 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.[g] And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.” 29 And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone. LESSON NOTES Tradition vs. Commandment (Mark 7:1-13) The Conflict: Pharisees and teachers of the law criticize the disciples for eating with "unwashed hands"—a ritual tradition, not a command from God. The Absurdity: The Pharisees focused on hand-washing rituals even while witnessing Jesus perform miraculous healings. The Danger of "Corban": Jesus highlights how human traditions can actually be used to bypass God's commands, such as using religious dedication as an excuse to avoid caring for aging parents. The Source of Defilement (Mark 7:14-23) Outer vs. Inner: Jesus teaches that nothing entering from the outside defiles a person; rather, defilement comes from what is already inside the heart. The Heart's Inventory: Evil thoughts, greed, malice, and arrogance all originate within and are what truly make a person "unclean". The World's Unluckiest Bear: The story of the albino grizzly bear (and the fact that the story itself was a hoax) illustrates how easily we are fooled by outward appearances and how quickly we judge others based on surface-level information. A Surprising Model of Faith (Mark 7:24-30) The Syrophoenician Woman: Outwardly, she was "unclean" by every cultural standard—a Gentile woman with a daughter possessed by an unclean spirit. The Contrast: While the "religiously perfect" Pharisees and the chosen disciples failed to understand Jesus, this "unclean" woman demonstrated profound faith and humility. The Result: She recognized Jesus' authority (calling him "Lord") and her daughter was healed because of her faith-filled response. Application Avoid "Externalism": Be careful not to turn people into "issues" or "projects" based on their outward behavior. Hold Traditions Loosely: We must be willing to let Jesus' word contradict our habits and preferences. Practice Inner Formation: Confession: Engaging in the discipline of confessing sins to one another to bring the heart into the light. Spiritual Disciplines: Intentional practices like prayer to shape our inner selves. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Ice Breaker: Based on the sermon's opening poll, are you "Team Cadbury Egg" or "Team Reese's Egg"? If you had to pick one "compound coating" or fake version of a food you love that you absolutely cannot stand, what would it be? Have you ever been disappointed upon discovering the ingredients of something? Discussion Questions: Tradition vs. Truth: Jesus used the example of "Corban" to show how religious traditions can actually help us avoid doing what God truly wants. Can you think of modern "traditions" or "religious checklists" that might accidentally give us an excuse to avoid the harder work of loving others or obeying God? The "Joey the Bear" Reflection: Jeremy shared that many people feel judgmental toward the conservationists in the bear story until they realize the story itself is a hoax. How does this "double-blind" story challenge the way you view or judge the "Pharisees" in your own life? The Heart of the Matter: Jesus lists several "evils" that come from within the heart (greed, malice, slander, arrogance, etc.). Why is it often easier for us to focus on "clean hands" (outward behavior and rituals) than to deal with these internal heart issues? Learning from the "Outsider": The Syrophoenician woman understood Jesus better than his own disciples did at that moment. What does her interaction with Jesus teach us about how we should approach God when we feel "unclean" or unworthy? Practical Steps: The lesson suggested confession to others as a way to "cut past the external". What makes the idea of confessing struggles to another person so intimidating, and how might it lead to the "transformed heart" Jesus is looking for?

This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Fencing the Torah: When Guardrails Become a Cage Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2836 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps!   I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2836 of our Trek.   The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website   theologyinfive.com.   Today's lesson is titled:  Fencing the Torah: When Guardrails Become a Cage. The Mosaic Law was never meant to be a burden. It was a covenantal gift from Yahweh, designed to keep Israel from being consumed by the idolatry and sin of the nations around them. Its commands were meant to cultivate holiness, justice, and a faithful relationship between Yahweh and His people. However, in the generations following the Babylonian exile, something began to shift. Out of a fear of repeating the sins of the past, religious leaders began to surround the Law with extra rules, commonly known as “fences around the Torah.” These were man-made traditions designed to prevent even accidental violations of the Law. While the intent may have been preservation, the result was often distortion. The first segment is: The Growth of Extra Regulations. After the exile, leaders such as the Pharisees sought to ensure that Israel would never again provoke divine judgment. They added extensive interpretations and safeguards, believing they were honoring the Law by keeping people far from even the edge of disobedience. For example, the Sabbath commandment, which was meant to provide rest and space to reflect on God's provision, was expanded with dozens of additional rules specifying what constituted work. These additions turned a gift into a source of stress. The system became increasingly intricate. Laws were applied in every possible situation with minute precision, yet the heart of the Law, faithful devotion to Yahweh, was often lost in the process. The goal had shifted from walking with God to avoiding missteps. The fences were built so high and wide that they began to obscure the path they were meant to protect. The second segment is: The Burden of Legalism. Though rooted in a desire for holiness, these extra laws often led to legalism. External behavior was emphasized over internal transformation. What mattered was checking the boxes, not cultivating a heart of loyalty and love for God. Jesus exposed this problem throughout His ministry. In Matthew 23 verses 23-24, He rebuked the Pharisees for focusing on the smallest details of tithing while neglecting the weightier matters of the Law, justice, mercy, and faithfulness. He accused them of straining out gnats while swallowing camels. One striking example is the practice of Corban, described in Mark 7 verses 11-13. Religious leaders allowed people to dedicate their money or possessions to God as a loophole to avoid using those resources to care for their aging parents. It technically followed the rules, but in doing so, it directly violated the commandment to honor one's father and mother. What was permitted by tradition became a contradiction of Scripture. The third segment is: From Relationship to Ritual. The deeper tragedy of these added laws was how they shifted the focus from relationship to ritual. Ritual purity took the place of heart purity. Elaborate handwashing ceremonies and detailed rules about cleanliness became central, as seen in Mark 7: verses 1-8. But Jesus made clear that the real impurity was in the heart, not on the hands. The Law had become a system of external conformity that missed its own spiritual core. These traditions also created barriers for Gentiles. What was meant to be a light to the nations became a maze of regulations that few could navigate. Rather than making Yahweh known to the world, the Law became a source of exclusion. Holiness was measured by performance, not by devotion, and people who genuinely sought after God were often discouraged or kept at a distance. The fourth segment is: Jesus and the Fulfillment of the Law. Jesus did not reject the Law. He fulfilled it. He brought clarity to its purpose and corrected the man-made traditions that had clouded its meaning. When asked what the greatest commandments were, He answered simply: love God and love your neighbor. Everything else depended on those two truths. His healings on the Sabbath, His rebukes of legalism, and His teachings on mercy all pointed to this deeper purpose. The Law was meant to shape a people who reflected Yahweh's character. Jesus demonstrated that true obedience flows from a transformed heart, not rule-following. He showed that the Law, at its best, reveals the holiness of God and calls His people into faithful relationship with Him—not burdensome perfectionism, but believing loyalty. In Conclusion. The additional rules created by Jewish authorities were an attempt to safeguard holiness, but in practice, they often concealed the heart of the Law rather than preserving it. They turned what was meant to be a guide into a trap. When Jesus came, He tore down the fences to restore the original intent. The Law was not given to generate pride or exclusion. It was a path to walk with God, grounded in love, justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Faithful devotion to Yahweh has never been about meticulous compliance. It has always been about trust, worship, and a life oriented around His holiness. The lesson is clear. Whenever man-made rules overshadow the heart of God's Word, we risk building fences that trap instead of guide. To explore this study further, consider these Discussion Questions. What motivated Jewish leaders to create fences around the Torah, and why did these intentions sometimes go wrong? How did these added regulations affect people's ability to draw near to Yahweh? How can we guard against it? How do love, justice, and mercy help us interpret and live out God's commands today? Can tradition hold equal authority with Scripture? Dr. John Neufeld examines what Jesus taught about tradition in Mark 7:1-13, where the Pharisees criticized His disciples for not following ceremonial hand washing traditions. Jesus responded by quoting Isaiah: "They teach as doctrines the commandments of men." When tradition conflicts with Scripture—as when the Pharisees used "Corban" to avoid honouring their parents—tradition always loses. Pastor Jon Verwey When we trust our own rules, our way of living, or even our church culture more than God's Word, Jesus begins to fade from view. The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.) So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?” He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.' You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,' and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.' 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)—then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. — James 1:22–25 NIV Jesus knew the Word, Jesus quoted the Word, Jesus taught the Word, Jesus fulfilled the Word. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God's law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. — Matthew 5:18 NLT If you love me, obey my commandments. — John 14:15 NLT And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate… But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.— John 14:16a & 26 NLT The more we trust and live by our own rules, the more Jesus fades from view—but trusting and living by God's Word reveals Him clearly.

In today's English episode, Aaron takes his lunch break from work to sit down with his intern, Corban, for a conversation about the principles Aaron uses to evaluate fellowship with churches of like and similar faith and practice. As believers, we are not meant to live in isolation. Yet, within the German context, we often lack the luxury of clear criteria for establishing such fellowship. That's why we must rely on biblical principles and godly wisdom to discern, build, and nurture fellowship with other churches and believers.

Preaching is never meant to stop at information - it is meant to produce transformation. That was the heart of Eric Lockhart's message, Preaching for Change and Obedience, delivered at the Expositors Collective training event in Kampala on 13 September 2024. With warmth and clarity, Eric urged preachers to stay rooted in the biblical text while pressing their listeners toward holiness and obedience through Spirit-empowered application.He reminded participants that the preacher's task is not to simply talk about the Bible but to faithfully declare what the Bible says. Using the image of a river, Eric explained that the power of preaching flows from the Holy Spirit working through the proclamation of Scripture. The goal is not to impress hearers with knowledge but to persuade them toward faithful action in response to God's Word.Eric also highlighted the necessity of application, both in the preacher's own life and in the lives of the audience. Biblical truth, he insisted, always demands a response. Application may be woven throughout a sermon or drawn out at the end, but it must be Christ-centred, specific, and actionable. In doing so, preaching helps believers become doers of the Word and not hearers only.Mr Eric Lockhart serves as Deputy Principal of Academic Affairs at Uganda Baptist Seminary. He holds an MDiv and ThM from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina, and before moving to Uganda in 2018 with his wife and four boys, he pastored in the USA for fourteen years. At UBS, he lectures on Hermeneutics and Homiletics and continues to champion preaching that does more than inform - preaching that transforms.Mr. Eric Lockhart is First Deputy Principal of Academic Affairs at Uganda Baptist Seminary in Jinja, UG where he also serves as Lecturer. In addition, he serves with the International Mission Board (IMB) as the Theological Education Strategist for Sub-Saharan Africa. Likewise, he serves as convener of ABTEN and a contributor to AB316, the writing branch of ABTEN. Mr. Lockhart holds both a MDiv in Christian Ministry and a ThM in Applied Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) in Wake Forest, NC. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Applied Theology with an emphasis on preaching. Mr. Lockhart is a contributing author and co-editor of  True Prosperity: A Bible Study for the African Church. Previously, he served eighteen years as a pastor in United States. He has been married to Rebekah for 23 years.
