God has cared about widows from the very beginning - The Law (Deuteronomy); The Prophets; The Gospels; and The Epistles. Caring for widows fulfills the 2 Great Commandments AND impacts our evangelism - John 13:34-35 Sadly, many churches discount widows and senior adults as a whole. They are often viewed as a burden to the church. They are largely ignored because they are viewed as no longer a productive part of the church. It's basically a “What have you done for me lately” mindset. This is not the view of our Lord. This cannot be the view of His Church. I. From Psalm 51Open my lips, O Lord, *and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.Create in me a clean heart, O God, *and renew a right spirit within me.Cast me not away from your presence *and take not your holy Spirit from me.Give me the joy of your saving help again *and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.Glory be to the + Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen. A PsalmPsalm 74Ut quid, Deus?O God, why have you utterly cast us off? why is your wrath so hot against the sheep of your pasture?Remember your congregation that you purchased long ago, the tribe you redeemed to be your inheritance, and Mount Zion where you dwell.Turn your steps toward the endless ruins; the enemy has laid waste everything in your sanctuary.Your adversaries roared in your holy place; they set up their banners as tokens of victory. They were like men coming up with axes to a grove of trees; they broke down all your carved work with hatchets and hammers. They set fire to your holy place; they defiled the dwelling-place of your Name and razed it to the ground. They said to themselves, "Let us destroy them altogether.” They burned down all the meeting-places of God in the land. There are no signs for us to see; there is no prophet left; there is not one among us who knows how long. How long, O God, will the adversary scoff? will the enemy blaspheme your Name for ever? Why do you draw back your hand? why is your right hand hidden in your bosom?Yet God is my King from ancient times, victorious in the midst of the earth. You divided the sea by your might and shattered the heads of the dragons upon the waters; You crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him to the people of the desert for food. You split open spring and torrent; you dried up ever-flowing rivers.Yours is the day, yours also the night; you established the moon and the sun.You fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.Remember, O Lord, how the enemy scoffed, how a foolish people despised your Name.Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; never forget the lives of your poor.Look upon your covenant; the dark places of the earth are haunts of violence.Let not the oppressed turn away ashamed; let the poor and needy praise your Name.Arise, O God, maintain your cause; remember how fools revile you all day long.Forget not the clamor of your adversaries, the unending tumult of those who rise up against you. Glory be to the + Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen. The ReadingsGalatians 5:11–21But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves! For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.The Word of the LordThanks Be to God Mark 7:5–15And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;in vain do they worship me,teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother'; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.' But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”' (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”The Word of the LordThanks Be to GodThe Apostles' CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. ExamenIn God's presence, think through the day ahead:the work you will do, the people you will encounter, the dangers or uncertainties you face, the possibilities for joy and acts of kindness, any particular resolutions you need to renew, consider what might draw you from the love of God and neighbor, the opportunities you will have to know and serve God and to grow in virtue, remember those closest to you and all for whom you have agreed to pray, ask God's blessings, guidance, and strength in all that lies before you. Gather up these thoughts and reflections in the wordsOur Savior taught us to say: The Lord's PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Collects of the DayLord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Closing PrayersA Prayer of St. ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. Glory be to the + Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.Lord, have mercy! (3x)God, be gracious to us and bless us and shine Your countenance upon us and have mercy on us.This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!The Father+ is my hope; the Son, my refuge; the Holy Spirit, my protection: All-Holy Trinity, glory to You!Amen!
In this conversation between Corban and Jessica Battle, she starts off telling a story from when she was seven years old and her father left her family in a difficult situation, and how that was the start of her damaging relationship with food. She shared how her eating choices caused shame as she grew up. At age 19 she was ready to loose weight, and did, but only with a severely limited diet, not addressing the issues that were causing the dysfunction. When she achieved a smaller size, she got more attention and acceptance which felt damaging as it reinforced the messaging that her size was the most important part of her worth. A year later she had gained back the weight. She dieted again, but this time realized she needed to do it differently. It was more sustainable, but she still needed to address her relationship with food itself, and the reasons she used food to cope. Finally, she committed to no longer be on a restrictive diet and felt brave enough to confront the things that were holding her back. Her personal growth was directly related to seeing herself differently, to learning and embracing her worthiness.Jessica Battle is a mindset coach and is known as the Queen of Pep-talks. She is the author of the book Battle for Growth, where she tells her story of loosing over a hundred pounds—twice, and how she healed her relationship with food in the process. Her podcast, Queen of Pep-Talks is a motivational masterpiece that helps women loose their bullshit excuses and show up in their lives. Here in Mark, Jesus describes a manmade custom that is no longer familiar. And at first, it sounds like the gold standard of pious worship. For someone to declare a portion of their wealth as “Corban” was to declare that it was now set aside as a gift to God. Doesn't that sound inspiring? You can be sure that folks marveled at back then as well. However, the intentions behind this practice weren't as pure as they appeared. The true gold-standard of pious worship was what Jesus has done for you and me.

This episode is a deep dive into the controversial psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy with Corban and today's co-host, Rachel Spyker. They discuss the importance of having this conversation, the profoundly transformative effects of this medicines when used specifically and intentionally, with care and caution. These therapies can help reduce rigid thoughts, support us in moving into primary consciousness states, help us reflect on our relational templates, and aid us in becoming aware of our primary conscious awarenessThey touch on the dangers of this therapy when doing it with a practitioner who isn't well-trained, when a strong therapeutic relationship isn't established, and when the treatment is not well-suited to the client's needs and conditionCorban and Rachel define set and setting when preparing for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, and the importance of establishing them as the foundation for this therapy. They talk about two models of associated therapy, one being the Passive Sitter model, the other Psychedelic Somatic Intersectional Psychotherapy, and how the second model is based in part around learning safety around saying “no.”Proper after-care in phychadelic-assisted phychotherapy is discussed, and the importance of stabilization. They touch on real risks involved in this type of therapy and that research and training has not yet progressed to help people with certain conditions. Finally, they explore healing and connection, the type of connections we need to heal depending on wounding, and summarize with the statement: “good psychedelic assisted psychotherapy is good therapy, plus the right psychedelic plus the right dose.”Rachael Spyker has a Masters in Psychology and is a Registered Clinical Counselor in Kelowna, BC, Canada.
