Click here for the Utah Dept. of Culture & Community Engagement version of this Speak Your Piece episode which includes topics discussed in time, photos of guest speakers and additional resources and readings.Podcast Content:  Former Utah State University (USU) grad student Emma Jones and USU Assistant Professor of Environment and Society Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova, shares the history and science related to the Home Owners' Loan Corporations' (HOLC) “redlining" of Salt Lake City; and their investigations of spatial distribution of environmental hazards contained in both the city's original west side (Pioneer Park neighborhood) and in expanded west side communities (Poplar Grove, West Pointe, Rose Park, Glendale, South Salt Lake, etc.), where most of Salt Lake City's communities of color reside. This podcast is all about how examining the past (history) along with geographical and public health data (science) can help a community like Salt Lake City see evidence concerning contemporary health and social problems, how such evidence can play a part in solving these problems, and point municipal and community leaders towards better city and development practices. “Scholars have found that race is the most significant predictor of environmental pollution exposure…Crowder and Downey (2010) [and they have] found that Black and Latinx households experience higher levels of proximate industrial pollution compared to White households.” This is an excerpt from Emma Jones' capstone project. Jones and Shcheglovitova anticipate their research to be used in further investigations regarding spatial patterns and terrestrial pollution in SLC. Their research connects the study of spatial distribution of terrestrial pollution to both historic and present-day planning practices which they believe perpetuate housing segregation and disinvestment in communities of color. Bottom line: Jones and Shcheglovitova documents the existence of environmental racism in SLC. Their identification of spatial patterns led them to create an interactive map accessible in Salt Lake West Side Stories -- post 35 (see within a link to Jones' complete paper).Bio: Emma Nathel Jones has a Bachelors of Science in Conservation and Restoration Ecology with an emphasis in GIS and a minor in Landscape Architecture. During their time at Utah State they worked on a variety of research projects concerning sustainable energy development and sustainable agriculture as a part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship. They are currently pursuing a Masters in City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah.  Bio: Dr. Mariya Shcheglovitova is a human geographer with interests that span environmental and social justice, urban political ecology, cultural geography, and environmental history. She completed her PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she worked on a project investigating present-day and historic intersections of street tree planting programs, waste management, and housing segregation. Do you have a question or comment, or a proposed guest for “Speak Your Piece?” Write us at “ask a historian” – askahistorian@utah.gov

When it comes to the work we are called to do for God, in frustration some may ask, “What's the point?” Nothing God calls us to do is small in His eyes. It counts to Him. We are to be diligent and faithful in the smallest things for God, like the vigilant gatekeepers, the singers that were the spiritual vitality and the Levites (the minutia men). The first guests to be able to experience the attraction will be able to do so at the Disney Merriest Nites event on November 11th. We will have to wait and see if the attraction reopens before the end of the year. – https://www.micechat.com/303988-disneyland-update-happy-hauntings-and-magic-keys-clogged/ A couple of weeks ago, the World of Color lagoon was drained to work on the infrastructure for the nighttime spectacular. With the lagoon drained, some cast members have reported that the lagoon itself is also getting some work done. MiceChat reports that the show is not expected to return until sometime in 2022. – https://www.micechat.com/303988-disneyland-update-happy-hauntings-and-magic-keys-clogged/ Magic Key holders may have noticed the reservation calendar filling up faster recently. This is probably in part due to the popular holiday season we are in, in addition to Magic Keyholders grabbing a reservation in advance in case they want to go to the parks on a specific day, with the ability to cancel before midnight the day before with no penalty. Our recommendation is to check the calendar often, especially closer to midnight to snag a reservation. – https://www.micechat.com/303736-disneylands-haunted-mansion-holiday-celebrates-its-20th-scary-christmas/ The Amazon smart speakers are getting a little more Disney. We are God's workmanship. That includes those who may feel they are outside of the favored group, like Hagar or the woman at the well. The God who sees is the God who is watching, who cares, and who knows all about us, and He is not done working on us individually or collectively. Like a skilled hunter, satan observes and considers us to make his most powerful attacks, to hinder us, to tempt us, and to take us as prey. But God has His hand on us. There is no reason why we should be under this kind of attack unless we have a part in God's kingdom. There is a battle for us, and we need to take spiritual inventory so we can see where the battle is. We cannot fight the devil in the flesh, but in unity with Christ. He translated Greek and Arabic medical references along with other European texts and created a master medical reference. The book helped educate people about the plaque and earned Lorenz a coat of arms and title. In an age when people were afraid of nightshade plants, Lorenz grew potatoes. His large seven-acre garden was divided into four main quadrants connected by paths. In the middle of the garden, a large dining hall and art gallery entertained guests.   September 20, 1872  Birth of Mary Sophie Young, American botanist, and explorer. Born in Glendale, Ohio, she had seven older brothers who she credited for her toughness. After getting her Ph.D., she was put in charge of the Austin herbarium for Texas. She concealed her gender by signing correspondence "M.S. Young." During her career, she fell in love with botanizing in West Texas, and her work helped create a flora of Texas. On a 1914 trip, she wrote in her journal: It's about five o'clock now. The ‘lonely' time is beginning. The air is very transparent and very still, and everything glistens. There is something of that uncanny feeling of the consciousness of inanimate things.   September 20, 1902  Birth of Florence Margaret Smith (pen name Stevie Smith), English poet and novelist. She was awarded the Cholmondeley Award for Poets and won the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry. A play Stevie by Hugh Whitemore, based on her life, was adapted into a film starring Glenda Jackson. She wrote, Nothing is more wistful than the scent of lilac, nor more robust than its woody stalk, for we must remember that it is a tree as well as a flower; we must try not to forget this.   Unearthed Words July let me go with the sea She stood there handing me over to the future I seemed farther than ever before July she watched me die under the arms of August September lived in harmony She took me by the hand And gave me one more chance October and a century of life.” ― Patricia Rezai, Submerged in a Garden of Lust   Grow That Garden Library To Speak for the Trees by Diana Beresford-Kroeger This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is My Life's Journey from Ancient Celtic Wisdom to a Healing Vision of the Forest. A Canadian botanist, biochemist, and visionary, Diana won the 2019 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award for this book, which shares her family's Celtic ancestry along with a deeper perspective on trees and their communities - what we call forests. Diana shares why trees matter, the role they play in solving our climate change crisis, and a path toward a greater appreciation for these quiet giants of our planet. This book is 304 pages of a tree celebration and cautionary plea to recognize and safeguard their value to us all. You can get a copy of To Speak for the Trees by Diana Beresford-Kroeger and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $16.   Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart September 20, 1881  Birth of Edgar Albert Guest, British-American writer, columnist, and poet. Thanks to his happy, hopeful poetry, he was beloved and became known as the “People's Poet” during the first half of the 20th century. Here's an excerpt from his poem called To Plant a Garden:   If your purse no longer bulges and you've lost your golden treasure, If at times you think you're lonely and have hungry grown for pleasure, Don't sit by your hearth and grumble, don't let mind and spirit harden. If it's thrills of joy you wish for get to work and plant a garden! If it's drama that you sigh for, plant a garden and you'll get it You will know the thrill of battle fighting foes that will beset it If you long for entertainment and for pageantry most glowing, Plant a garden and this summer spend your time with green things growing. If it's comradeship you sight for, learn the fellowship of daisies. You will come to know your neighbor by the blossoms that he raises; If you'd get away from boredom and find new delights to look for, Learn the joy of budding pansies which you've kept a special nook for. If you ever think of dying and you fear to wake tomorrow Plant a garden! It will cure you of your melancholy sorrow Once you've learned to know peonies, petunias, and roses, You will find every morning some new happiness discloses. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Hey, you... how's your crypto? A real roller coaster, huh? Prolly want a guy like Mr. White Hat on your side. Also, maybe, don't use crypto if you want to fight the anxiety. Tom did a little traveling a few weeks back and the trip was fine. Oh, wait. No it wasn't. The friends were nice but the trip itself was a damned nightmare of travel anxiety. This week, he shares some good times in the Austin airport, an epic exercise in friendliness and frustration, and the real reason he was anxious: reports of unruly passengers. You don't have to look too far for details. Caitlin Gibson wrote a backgrounder on it back in 2016 for the WaPo: Passengers behaving badly: The real reason we freak out on planes. 2016 Since then, things have only gotten worse, with nearly 4,000 reports and 600 under active investigation by the FAA this year so far. Thankfully, the Federal Aviation Administration has finally come out of hiding and released... a PSA: You Don't Want Your Pilots Distracted: Unruly Behavior Doesn't Fly (YouTube). You should watch it. It's horrifying. Or don't, we get it. Pete takes on a listener submission that hits home. We're talking about Aquaphobia, the specific phobia that describes people with a fear of water. In this case: "People suffer aquaphobia in many ways and may experience it even though they realize the water in an ocean, a river, or even a bathtub poses no imminent threat. They may avoid such activities as boating and swimming, or they may avoid swimming in the deep ocean despite having mastered basic swimming skills. This anxiety commonly extends to getting wet or splashed with water when it is unexpected, or being pushed or thrown into a body of water." The academics behind "Aquaphobia: Causes, Symptoms and Ways of Overcoming It for Future Well-Being" share some data and their observations on causes behind the anxiety. The problem is that this fear causes people to avoid learning to, or becoming proficient swimmers. And when they avoid becoming proficient swimmers and they're unexpectedly submerged in water, they have a predictably high chance of drowning. We need to fix that. Or maybe Paul Lennon of the Adult Aquaphobia Swim Center in Glendale, California will have something to say about it. We'll talk about him in this episode, along with some of his compatriots doing the work of helping adults live with the fear AND become great swimmers in the process. And we talk about Simone Biles, too, because air sense is closely related to Pete's probably invented phrase water sense, which you're free to use yourself after you listen to this episode and learn what it means. This Week's Tune! Is it too on the nose that we bring you Sinking by Jane & the Boy this week? You be the judge. Find it in Apple Music or Spotify.

We don't find God; He chose us form among those He didn't choose before the world was formed. The purpose of the choice is that we could be holy and without blame when we finally come before Him in love. Becoming holy and blameless before Him is not a change we make in ourselves. He makes that change in us for our faith.  VF-2204   Ephesians 1:4 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. He rose again from the dead on the third day, and ascended bodily into heaven as our Priest and Advocate. He will return bodily to earth. We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the triune Godhead.

The cross cannot remain an event of the past; without the cross, there would be no resurrection. We can either flee from the cross or embrace it as the means of a slow death of our old nature. Christ's death on His cross brought an end to the jurisdiction of the Law. We have union with Christ in death, resurrection, and ascension when we take up our own cross. The cross is where everything begins to be clear about working out our salvation in Christ.   VF-2164 Watch, Listen and Learn 24x7 at PastorMelissaScott.com Pastor Melissa Scott teaches from Faith Center in Glendale. The Athletic's Katie Strang recently broke the news that the Arizona Coyotes are essentially getting kicked out of their home arena in Glendale, AZ, citing multiple notices about outstanding and delinquent balances owed by the Coyotes. From 1984 through 1991, thousands of fires were intentionally set from Southern California to the Central Coast, the Central Valley and countless places in between.  Homes, business, dry brush...nothing was off limits.  The arsonist left virtually nothing behind in the way of evidence that could ever be traced back to him for years.  The damage and destruction soared into the millions...countless millions.  And 4 innocent lives were lost.  The arsonist was brazen, he set fires with impunity, and he managed to get away with it for a long time...until he finally slipped up and left behind a clue that would eventually lead investigators right to him.  It was then that it became clear why this pyromaniac was able to set fire after fire after fire while managing to elude capture - he was one of them...investigating the very fires that he was setting.  Busting arsonists while moonlighting as one.  Driven by a desire for attention, to be a hero, to be the very best at arson investigation, to garner recognition for his dedication to his job while he steadily rose through the ranks.  But, there was also an insatiable desire to feed his own sadomasochistic sexual urges...which for him, was to watch things burn.  It took years for investigators to catch on to him...and even when he did come up as a possible suspect, nobody who knew him or worked with him were even willing to entertain the possibility he was the arsonist they sought.  This only emboldened him even more and allowed for the devastation and destruction to continue for much longer than it should have.  Even years later, there are many who still refuse to believe he was responsible.  Join me as I tell the story of the most prolific serial arsonist the state of California, possibly the entire country, has ever seen.  You are listening to Killafornia Dreaming...And this is the tale of the firestarter.SOURCES:FIRE LOVER By Joseph Wambaughhttps://www.aetv.com/real-crime/john-orr-arsonist-father-firefighter-murderer-family-lori-orr-kovachhttps://abcnews.go.com/US/mind-arsonist-head-los-angeles-fire-starters/story?id=15274504IMPORTANT LINKS:Patreon:  https://www.patreon.com/killaforniapodPayPal:  https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/killaforniapodMerchandise:  https://www.redbubble.com/people/killaforniapod/shop?asc=uWebsite:  https://killaforniadreamingpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1296620370450345/Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/killaforniadreamingInstagram:  https://www.instagram.com/killaforniadreamingpod/?hl=enTwitter:  https://twitter.com/killaforniapodEmail:  killaforniapod@gmail.com
