In this week's show is an interview with General Ben Hodges, the commander of U-S forces in Europe. I caught up with him after NATO exercises in the Baltics and Poland, called "Saber Strike", and just before he was headed off to oversee "Saber Guardian" in the Black Sea region. General Hodges and Teri Schultz discuss the upcoming Zapad military drills by Russia and Belarus, which don't give him much cause for concern because, he says, "we're always ready." He'd like to see more transparency from the Kremlin as to the actual number of troops being used. Moscow says it's just 13,000, right on the limit for being forced to invite close-up inspections of their drills. Hodges says "prove it". And he has concerns that don't rest on the Russians -- but on allies themselves. European governments keep laws in place that block the movement of allied military equipment across borders -- even when needed for protection. US air power, British troops and other NATO nations simulate coming to the aid of the Baltic States around the Suwalki Gap, if they were to be cut off from the rest of NATO. Troops from Poland, the UK, the US and other contributing nations took part in an air insertion from US Army Chinook helicopters in and around the Suwalki Gap, which is the border area between Lithuania and Poland. As Leaders and Soldiers of 2d Cavalry Regiment kick off Dragoon Ride, their first stop was the Czech Republic. Dragoon Ride is a 2,200-kilometer trek from Germany to Estonia, en route to Saber Strike 16. This convoy will continue through Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and finally ending in Estonia. For 200 years now, men from Nepal have been serving as Gurkhas within the British army. Their numbers currently stand at around three and a half thousand. The 2nd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles are currently on exercise in Latvia. They’re taking part in Saber Strike which involves 6000 military personnel from 13 nations. The footage includes soundbites from Corporal Kusmal Raj Rai and Major Ed Oldfield, Officer Commanding, C Company. The GVs show the Gurkhas running through woods and across open land, firing weapons and carrying out reconnaissance. Also available in high definition.
