Jesus calls us his followers to guard against covetousness and worry and counter it by having an eternal perspective and a Kingdom pursuit. A nagging desire for more than what you have diminishes your enjoyment of what you have, it dishonors God who has graciously provided what you have, and it demonstrates ingratitude and discontentment. And Jesus offers us a better way of life. Jesus, who is the source of life, offers us a life that reflects the values of His Kingdom.

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” -Luke 12:15 ESV
Money itself is not evil. Besides saving, giving, serving…money is also used for spending—it’s a tool. The key here is not overindulging or squandering, but to use it with discretion, and to understand that the money we have REALLY isn’t ours in the first place. We have to shift our mind from owning/spending money, to STEWARDING the money God has given us responsibility with.
A request made of Jesus received a rebuke and teaching through a parable. Understanding the request will help us to know why Jesus rebuked him, and better understand the parable of the Rich Fool. Jesus then taught on why we should not worry and it ties right in.

As Christians, we may have questions that arise when it comes to our possessions or material things. How much is too much? Is this extravagant? Is a Christian even allowed to own this or that? Our flesh often desires a hard line to be drawn with these thoughts. However, there is more to be considered. Jesus takes into account more than what we see on the outside.

Greed is a secret sin of the heart. But while it may be a secret to others, it's not a secret to God. It causes us to focus on the temporal instead of the eternal, and it shows a fundamental lack of trust in God's provision for us.

True security is found not in our wealth but in Jesus Christ himself. Because He has made us His treasure, we can hold our treasures with an open hand.
PM Sermon
Evening Worship 24th Feb.'19
We have spent a couple of weeks now talking about loving Jesus, and loving what Jesus loves. We saw first that Jesus loves the church. Last week, we looked at what it is we would love about this specific, The Heights, as we seek to love what He loves. And today we see that through giving to God and eternity we focus our heart on God and eternity with a wonderful benefit of escaping worry, and being able to trust Him to provide for our needs.
Over the course of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus talks about and models what we call “spiritual disciplines.” These are practices that help us to grow and mature in our faith. They are the practices we participate in that help form us into who God wants us to be. Disciples and discipline share the same root in the Greek language and Jesus shows us that these concepts are tied together. If we want to follow Jesus, we have to be disciplined. Or, to say it the other way, disciplines make disciples. For the next six weeks, we’re going to learn the disciplines that help us to be disciples. Selected Quotes: "We have to guard against greed because it can sneak up on us. It can seize our hearts and corrupt our souls before we even know it." "Worry is the front door to greed. If worry can convince me not to trust in God, I will look for something else to trust." "Contentment puts us back on solid ground. It reminds us that there is a God who is in control."
"And he said to them, 'Take care and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." Luke 12:15

Can we really trust God to provide everything, even the most basic of needs?
You can’t serve God and money…or anything else for that matter. As He was asked to settle a financial dispute, Jesus took the opportunity to share not only on the foolishness of trusting in that which is not eternal, but also on the root cause of that misplaced trust.

What do you worship? Whom do you serve? That's the real question behind these verses. That's the underlying current that runs deep beneath the waters of Jesus' teaching here. We need to be on guard against the sin of covetousness.
Jesus has a way of completely changing the conversation. What He says about how we view money is different than anyone else speaks of- certainly different than our culture. Ultimately, we are to covet nothing more than a rich relationship with God. Are you an anxious fool or rich toward God?
God wants us to have freedom from the prison of worry and greed. Listen as Pastor Mark teaches us how to live in the freedom of abundance and generosity.
