Covetousness is to desire to take what belongs to others for oneself. Let us turn our hearts away from the world and its pleasures towards Jesus, in whom we find our fulfillment, that we may live in love for God and our neighbours.
Forcing the Plateau with Dr. Ruben Rajah Ruben Rajah is a comedian and doctor who embodies the concept of a global citizenry. Born in Malaysia, educated in Australia, and an American citizen for over 10 years, he is culturally comfortable everywhere and nowhere. Ruben likes to keep his medical career as a radiologist separate from his life as a comedian. We talk about what is involved with keeping your left and right brain from talking to each other and how to work 9 hours a day as a radiologist and still have energy left over to head into Manhattan to hit open mics. It was fun to find a kindred spirit who can't keep the comedian inside of him down! Here's our big question for this week's episode. Why does God tell us, “You shall not covet”? The answer is, “So we will be content with what we have.”
In this message, Pastor Aaron shares the symptoms to identify if you have an issue with coveting.
Message from Ruth A on August 10, 2025
Because we know that God is faithful to provide all that we need, we must not allow our hearts to covet anything that belongs to another and instead strive to find our contentment in Christ alone. I. Judy has some feedback for you In this episode, we have another certified veterinary practice manager and improv afficianado, Judith Asséo. (But you can call her Judy.) Judy has a life long love of helping animals and people, which has led to a career in veterinary medicine. She is currently the Senior Director of Operations at Western Veterinary Partners. At the same time, she has been an improv performer for over 30 years and performs regularly in San Francisco as part of the Secret Improv Society. How much has improv influenced her career managing people? A lot? Are veterinarians challenging to work with as a group? Maybe. Are veterinary specialists special, but maybe not in a good way? I think we are. I loved meeting Judy and I know you will too. She is like a hot cup of tea on a cold day. The final commandment is like a lens through which to view, and the key to living out, all the others. Murder, idolatry, stealing, failing to rest; these all proceed from covetousness. This is because coveting is a matter not of outward behavior, but of the heart. And when our heart is misaligned, everything else in our life will be too. Desire is an essential part of what it is to be human, but we're rarely in control of what it goes after. With the exception of our fundamental material needs like food and shelter, we're lead by our desire not primarily for things, but for identity. We desire what other people desire. And when those desires are not met, the result is often anger or violence. The only one who can satisfy our inbuilt desire is God himself, and in Jesus we have the only worthy model for our desire. He is who we're called to imitate. And when we set our hearts on him, all covetousness for what others desire, and which will never satisfy, is robbed of all its destructive power. By Ed Flint

Sin begins with desires in the heart, whether good or bad. Corrupt desires is coveting. Giving into temptations to fulfill those desires in twisted ways leads to death. This message draws from James 1:12-16 and other scriptures to make us aware of the desires that entice us and we look at how to put these sinful desires to death.

We all want the best for our kids, but knowing what's truly best isn't always easy. You've probably heard it—or said it yourself: “I just want my kids to have what I didn't.” It sounds noble, but it can sometimes lead to financial trouble. Today, we'll talk with Dr. Art Rainer about how that mindset can push parents into debt.Dr. Art Rainer is the founder of the Institute for Christian Financial Health and Christian Money Solutions. He is a regular contributor here at Faith & Finance and the author of Money in the Light of Eternity: What the Bible Says about Your Financial Purpose.6 Things That Can Lead Loving Parents Into DebtRaising kids is one of the most joyful and rewarding callings in life, but it can also be financially challenging. As parents, we want to give our children the best: opportunities, experiences, and resources that help them flourish. But sometimes, even with the best intentions, we can fall into financial traps that lead to debt. Here are six common ways loving parents may unintentionally sabotage their finances—and how to avoid them.1. Trying to Keep Up with the JonesesIt's a familiar struggle: your neighbor buys designer clothes for their kids or sends them to an elite private school, and suddenly you feel the need to do the same. But appearances can be deceiving—many people fund their lifestyle with debt. Chasing someone else's standard is a never-ending race, and the finish line keeps moving. Be cautious of modeling your spending after others who may not be living within their means.2. Falling into the Social Media Comparison TrapSocial media only shows the highlight reel. Perfect family vacations, overachieving kids, and pristine homes can tempt you to measure your life against a filtered illusion. These comparisons can spark discontentment and drive unnecessary purchases just to keep up appearances or ease the guilt of not "measuring up." Be mindful of how much your scrolling influences your spending.3. Believing Your Kids Need to Have It AllFrom travel teams to private lessons and elite camps, extracurricular activities have become a costly arms race. While these opportunities can be beneficial, they shouldn't come at the expense of your financial health. Don't believe the lie that your child will fall behind if they don't do everything. It's okay to say no, for the sake of your budget and your family's peace.4. Prioritizing Career Success Over Character DevelopmentThere's nothing wrong with wanting your children to succeed in school and in life, but academic or career accomplishments should never come at the cost of neglecting their hearts. Investing in your child's character, through time, guidance, and godly instruction, often requires less money but more intentional effort. And in the end, it matters far more.5. Overcompensating for What You Didn't HaveIf you lacked certain things growing up, it's natural to want your kids to have more. Whether it was a nicer bike, newer clothes, or a first car, those memories can shape how you respond as a parent. But giving in to every request—even on credit—can backfire. Love doesn't always mean saying “yes.” Sometimes it means exercising the wisdom to say “not right now.”6. Forgetting the Value of Doing WithoutNot getting what you wanted as a kid may have helped you grow. Maybe you learned creativity, resilience, or the value of work through those experiences. Don't rob your children of the same opportunity. Saying no might actually prepare them better for life than always saying yes.Loving your children doesn't mean giving them everything. It means stewarding your finances in a way that honors God and serves your family's long-term well-being. Avoiding debt is one of the best gifts you can give your children—it provides stability, models wisdom, and frees your family to give generously. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I called about our whole life insurance policy. Finding contentment in a world rife with envy and jealousy is no small feat. Through the wisdom of Orchot Tzaddikim and the insights of King Solomon, we explore how these emotions arise from a deep-seated dissatisfaction with our own blessings. This episode takes you on a journey through these complex emotions, urging us to resist the temptation to covet what others possess and instead cultivate gratitude for what we have.We also unravel a cautionary tale of a man whose descent into deceit and jealousy led him before the Beit Din, the Jewish court. His story is a stark reminder of how unchecked envy can spiral into a myriad of transgressions, including violations of the Ten Commandments. By examining this narrative, we grapple with the destructive potential of jealousy and consider how it can endanger our spiritual and moral compass. Join me as we confront these ancient struggles head-on, equipping ourselves with the wisdom to overcome them and embrace a more fulfilling life._____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)Recorded from a live audience presentation in the TORCH Centre - Levin Family Studios (B) in Houston, Texas on February 3, 2025.Released as Podcast on March 19, 2025_____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Scripture: Exodus 20:17, Mark 7:21-23, Matthew 6:33, 2 Corinthians 10:5, 1 Timothy 6:6-10 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:17 Covet - to yearn to possess or have what belongs to another. Covet - insatiable desire for more at the expense of others. Today's tenth word is unique as it regulates thought. The other ten words all regulate behavior (e.g. have no other gods, remember the Sabbath Day, honor your parents, don't steal, don't murder). We see in scripture how our thought-life has a huge influence on our behavior: Cain - Genesis 4 Joseph's brothers - Genesis 37 Korah - Numbers 16 David - 2 Samuel 11 Ghazi - 2 Kings 5 We see in the Bible that our thought-life greatly controls our behavior, actions and even our futures. As the mind thinks - so we behave. Pathology Envy Jealousy Dishonesty Relationships Dissatisfaction Focus Mental health Financial issues Where does coveting come from? Mark 7:21-23 tells us, “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” (ESV) Jesus is calling us to realize our thought-life matters! How do we stop coveting? 1. Christ - we need to look to Jesus and remember that He died on the cross and rose for us. Matthew 6:33 tells us to rely on Him and 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “…we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2. Contentment - while in this fallen world, we still know what the future holds: life forever with God. This is where our containment is found - in the promise of our future with Him. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 “But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 3. Celebration - celebrate what we have. In Philippians 4:4-7 we are told, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Celebrate the good things of God and have a thankful hearts. God's 10 Words are still powerful words today. He gives them to us to: 1. Protect us - keep us on His path 2. Reveal our sin - so that we come to Him 3. Give us direction - that guides our lives and shows us how to live When we take to heart God's Ten Words - that brings blessings to us as believers AND blessings to the world. Now What?
