We launched Lent and our new series titled, "@JESUS", where we will be focusing on the Instagram-worthy highlights of Jesus' ministry. In Week 1 we dive into the launching point of Jesus' ministry and find ourselves represented in his baptism and journey through the wilderness. We are challenged during this Lenten journey to see the kingdom of heaven that is all around, #thereismore, and tell our wilderness stories, #testimony.

Jesus victory over the devil in the wilderness transformed 40 days of trial into 40 days of triumph!
Morning Worship 20 Sept. '20
Our prayer is that we will be a church that has highly-developed spiritual senses to discern what is and is not the gospel, and that we will be clear in the proclamation and application of it. We must all become so clear on this all important message, so that we can encourage each other to believe it fully and apply it deeply.

We follow the theme of "new creation" from Isaiah to Revelation as we seek to understand the Good News proclaimed by Jesus and endorsed from the heavens at his baptism with the words. ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

The early Sundays of Lent are a wilderness time, an opportunity to go deep into our hearts and the souls of our communities, to recognize the depth of our estrangement from God, and to begin to put things right. Last Sunday we joined Jesus in the wilderness, where he spends forty days being tempted by Satan.

In the final act of our exploration of Scripture as drama we look to a vision of the future, painted through the words and deeds of Jesus, of the Kingdom of God. We see our role in ushering in this new creation and in the recovery of the Imago Dei, both individually and corporately.

Connecting People to God in Christ
Mark continues his fast pace in chapter 1 with only two verses covering the temptation of Jesus by Satan in the wilderness--Pastor Steve takes a quick detour to Luke 4 to cover this important section in more detail and returns to Mark to discuss the beginning of Jesus' ministry.
God is bigger than our metaphors and ideas. How can we be always looking for what God is up to?
There is a song which my son sings from Vacation Bible School last summer that says, "I want to be like Jesus." I've often heard this idea that we want to be like Jesus. I understand the sentiment, but we may not actually want to try to be like Jesus. As we observe our Lenten fasts, we realize that our fasting was inspired by Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness fasting and being tempted by Satan. We aren't really trying to copy or be like Jesus in our fasts, however. Jesus' fast and trials with Satan were his task and his story, not ours. His story is that of the eternal Word of God becoming human to unite us with God. His fast and his story was that of the cosmic struggle between creation and the forces of darkness, and Jesus defeated the forces of darkness. That was his story to tell. Our stories are not of cosmic victory over the forces of darkness, nor are they supposed to be. Jesus was God incarnate. We often can't go 40 days without diet coke and chocolate. Lent is not a time to compare ourselves to Jesus and feel badly because we aren't more like him. Lent is a time to get to know Jesus more, to get to know ourselves more, and to become more like who we truly are. Whatever our vocation, we live and proclaim the Kingdom of God because we are Jesus' disciples, baptized into his body. We do so in the ways our personalities, vocations, and talents allow. We don't try to be like Jesus and beat ourselves up for falling short. We be who we are, and seek to be more fully who we are.

The Father, Son and the Holy Spirit are the community that drives the universe. They conspired together in the creation of the world and come together again at the beginning of Jesus' ministry - at his baptism. This selfless community is the hope of the world.

Jesus came to establish The Kingdom of God as both a present reality and future promise. He demonstrates this by displaying His deity at baptism and power over the temptations of Satan.
