Reformation Day, celebrated on October 31st, marks one of the most transformative moments in church history — the day Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517. In today's prayer and devotional, we reflect on the fact that though Luther never sought to divide the Church, his bold stand for truth and his devotion to Scripture became a catalyst for reformation and renewal across the Christian world. As Lynette Kittle reflects, Luther wasn’t a rebel or revolutionary — he was a truth seeker who rediscovered the heart of the Gospel: we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8). His translation of the Bible into German opened the Word of God to everyday people, making Scripture accessible to all who longed to know God personally. Today, we commemorate Reformation Day not only as a historic event but as a call to continue valuing God’s Word above all else. Scripture is living and active — teaching, correcting, and equipping us for righteousness. Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our theme "Five Stunning Realities of the Gospel. Our scripture reference was Mark 6:42. We had a great discussion on how the Gospel is about provision, yet it's always about satisfaction. God wants us to be satisfied in the soul. We heard so many listener calls sharing the joy they have in God's provisions in their lives...and usually it's the simplest things. We spoke with Dr. David Nelms, the Founder of The Timothy Initiative (TTI). He shared that one of the most significant provisions of the Gospel is that we can love others and tell others about the Gospel. The Great Commission is great, but the Great Commandment to love others as God has loved us and tell them the Good News is even greater! Dr. Alex McFarland also joined us. He's a Christian apologist, author, evangelist, and culture analyst. He emphasized that the greatest satisfaction found in the Gospel is the cross! Every other provision and satisfaction comes from what happened on the cross. People can miss the blessings because they don't understand and culture is unstable. Rates continue to fall today. There were two rate announcements, only hours apart. This morning the bank of Canada reduced its benchmark lending rate by 0.25%. Weakness in the labor market was the top cited reason for the drop in rates. This afternoon at 2:30, Chair Powell stood at the podium as he does every six weeks and announces the results of the two day FOMC meetings. The Fed dropped their benchmark lending rate by 0.25% to a target range of 3.75% to 4%. This is the second consecutive rate cut by the Fed, a move aimed at supporting a labor market that has shown signs of weakening even while inflation continues to run above the Fed's 2% target. When you start to look at all of the corporate layoffs and the rising unemployment rate, it is very reminiscent of the 2001 recession that was led by layoffs in the tech sector.  So while the news of lower interest rates is welcome, the rates are a reaction to a faltering economy where just this week alone, more than 75,000 people lost their jobs. I'm not counting the smaller layoff announcements of only a few hundred people in that total.  These are big numbers. You don't see these kind of numbers in a growing economy. So the likelihood is high that the US is already in recession, but it is politically unpalatable to say that out loud. What's more, there is no data being collected or reported, so the economy can limp along under the cover of the government shutdown.  Then there is the government shutdown itself. Those families are not getting paid and you can guarantee that they've cut back on discretionary spending.
