Read OnlineWhile still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” Luke 11:29Today's Gospel takes place during the midpoint of Jesus' public ministry. By this time, He had healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead, preached many powerful sermons, and changed many hearts. Despite that, many in the crowds did not believe in Him and demanded more signs.Additionally, the Pharisees were becoming increasingly hostile toward our Lord. In Luke's Gospel, they confront and criticize Jesus several times before this passage. In today's Gospel, Jesus addresses His rebuke to these Pharisees and the unbelieving crowds. If Jesus' generation was “an evil generation,” what would He say about our own? In many ways, we are becoming a global culture. While there are countless faithful followers of Christ worldwide, evil seems to be more pervasive today, perhaps more noticeable due to the ease of worldwide communication.Though Jesus delivered His sermons to specific people in His time, His words transcend time and are meant for every generation. When He says, “This generation is an evil generation…,” we must understand that He is also speaking to us today. When Jesus says His generation “seeks a sign,” He points out a common human temptation. Many approach the Gospel skeptically, demanding irrefutable proof that they should change their lives, believe in the Good News, and abandon sin. In today's world, some even glorify sin, treating virtue as outdated or foolish. This distorted outlook leads many to disregard the most important sign of all—Jesus' Death and Resurrection.Yet Jesus is clear: “…no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” Jonah's three days in the belly of the fish prefigured Jesus' three days in the tomb. In other words, Jesus' Death and Resurrection is the one and only sign given to us. This is striking because so many fail to pay attention to this ultimate sign of salvation. In the end, we can only change ourselves and hope that our conversion becomes a witness to others.Do you believe in this sign? Do you believe that Jesus' Life, Death, and Resurrection is the sole path to salvation? Most likely, you do. But how deep is that belief?Though Jesus performed many miracles during His earthly ministry, He did so as a response to the faith already present in those around Him. Today, the same is true. Physical miracles mean little compared to the saving Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. They are merely reflections of the greatest miracle—eternal salvation. If you truly want to witness a miracle, turn to this supreme gift of grace and mercy. Believe with all your heart, and you will witness the transformation of your soul, which is the greatest miracle of all. Reflect today on Jesus' rebuke of the evil surrounding us, which demands proof but refuses to see the one sign that truly matters. The only proof Jesus offers is the grace that transforms us. When we discover and embrace this grace, we will know, believe, and be changed. Open your heart to the miracle of conversion that God desires to bestow upon you, and become a witness of Christ's greatest miracle for others to see. My miraculous Lord, though many in every age seek superficial signs, You offer the one true miracle that brings salvation—Your Life, Death, and Resurrection. Please help me to believe with unwavering faith, and protect me from the evil of this generation. Transform my heart so that I may be the fruit of the miracle You wish to give to the world. Genesis 1v27-28, Revelation 22v1-5 with Tyler Staton From Genesis to Revelation, the biblical story reveals that we are created in God's image to rule by working and keeping his world for the flourishing of others. Yet when work becomes a way to prove our worth or secure our identity apart from God, it turns into anxious toil instead of a blessing. This teaching invites us to rediscover our everyday work as participation in God's renewal, shifting from success to service and learning to labor at the pleasure of the true King. bridgetown.church/teaching

Monday February 23, 2026I Week of LentToday's readings remind us that God's purposes often begin in obscurity, tension, and testing. In Genesis 37:1–11, Joseph receives dreams of future exaltation—but those dreams stir jealousy and division within his own family. What God reveals in promise does not always unfold in peace. Sometimes destiny is planted in dysfunction, and faith must hold steady while the story develops. In 1 Corinthians 1:1–19, Paul confronts a divided church tempted to rally around personalities and human wisdom. He redirects them to the cross—the true center of unity and power. The message of Christ crucified may seem foolish to the world, but it is the very wisdom and power of God.And in Mark 1:1–13, the Gospel opens with urgency: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ.” From John's call to repentance, to Jesus' baptism and the Father's affirmation, to the Spirit leading Him into the wilderness—God's redemptive plan moves forward with purpose. Before public ministry comes testing; before glory comes obedience. This episode invites us to trust God's dreams even when misunderstood, to center our lives on the cross rather than personalities, and to embrace both affirmation and wilderness as part of God's unfolding work.

In "Good News: I Have a Dream," we believe God is calling us back to divine vision. Scripture shows that without revelation people drift, but when God restores vision, He restores life. Vision isn't personal ambition, it's revelation that awakens purpose. Whether we're living with no dream, or a God dream, He is inviting us higher. A God dream requires surrender, stewardship, and courage, knowing we will give account for what we did with what He placed in our hands. And like the blind man in Mark 8, even if vision has faded, Jesus is still the God of "once more", restoring sight, reigniting purpose, and awakening dreams again.

Today Pastor Chad teaches that true fulfillment for the human soul doesn't come from comfort, experiences, or temporary “crumbs,” but from doing the will of God and participating in His mission. Using John 4, he shows that just as Jesus was sustained by obeying the Father, believers are called to move beyond simply receiving from God into being sent by Him—sharing the gospel in everyday life. The core challenge is to stop chasing temporary satisfaction and instead find lasting joy and purpose in joining Jesus in the harvest, knowing that whether we plant, water, or reap, God uses it all for eternal impact.

Message from morning service - Church on the Hill, San Jose, CA

City Harbor Church – Hampden, Baltimore, MD

Ephesians 4:10-13 God speaks thru prophets and apostles. Jesus loves you so much that he gave the church gifts. “The One who climbed down is the One who climbed back up, up to highest heaven. He handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with his gifts, filled earth with his gifts. He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ's followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ's body, the church, until we're all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God's Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ.” – Ephesians 4:10-13  The Message by Eugene Peterson “And he (Jesus) himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God's Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ's fullness.” – Ephesians 4:11-13  CSB 1. Prophets God speaks. Prophecy – speak on behalf of God before others Prophet – one who speaks inspired utterances on behalf of God “The name ‘prophets' (in Eph. 4:11) is given to those who, having received the Spirit of God, spoke beforehand of Christ and his advent. These were the prophets who “were until Christ.” But after he arrived, was there no reason for any further prophecy? What prophets does Paul speak of here? It is obviously those who being full of the Spirit spoke of God after his coming, continuing to expound the divine teaching.” – Marius Victorinus 280-363 Old Testament prophets spoke the message God gave them, and many pointed to Jesus Christ. “Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet.” – Matthew 1:22  CSB Some New Testament prophets: John the Baptist, Anna in Luke 2:36, Agabus in Acts 11:29, 21:10,  Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen in Acts 13:1-2, Silas & Judas Barsabbas in Acts 15:32, 4 daughters of Phillip in Acts 21:8-9,  John in Revelation “the spirit of prophecy” – Revelation 19:10 “This means that prophecy at its very heart is designed to unfold the beauty and loveliness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” – John Walvoord Training, Discernment, and Accountability:  “Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate. But if something has been revealed to another person sitting there, the first prophet should be silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged. And the prophets' spirits are subject to the prophets, 33 since God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” – 1 Corinthians 14:29–33   CSB  “many false prophets will appear and fool many people,” – Matthew 24:11    Elijah school of the prophets in 1 Kings 19:18, training people in understanding the Scripture, discerning God's voice, and speaking it. In 2 Kings 2 we see groups of prophets interacting with Elijah and Elisha. Paul & Barnabas – described as “prophets and teachers” then commissioned, sent in apostolic ministry “Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then after they had fasted, prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them off.” – Acts 13:1-3  CSB 2. Apostle – an envoy of Jesus, a representative messenger sent, a “special” messenger (having been commissioned by Jesus Christ for a particular task or role, invested with the authority to speak on his behalf)   …borrowing and changing a Greek term for, emissaries, one who is to carry a message and is commissioned to extend the kingdom (military or naval) a commander of a naval expedition (generally restricted to the immediate followers of Jesus Christ, but also extended, as in the case of Paul, to other early Christians active in proclaiming the message of the gospel) – Louw, J. P., & Nida, E. A. (1996). In Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament “Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his Good News.” – Romans 1:1  (possible reference to a Jewish embassy in Rome that required travel by sea) Denotes God-given spiritual authority, mission and message, to be recognized by others (including leaders) Influence in more than one local church Alignment > Heirarchy  God speaks. God had spoken. God is speaking. God will speak. “This is a house set up and ordered by Jesus.… He does not do this in a casual manner. It is with the utmost discrimination and discretion: One is assigned to the rank of an apostle, one to the place of a prophet, others to look after the flock of Christ and to work at the divine instruction of others for those saints who are prepared to learn.” – Didymus the Blind a Biblical scholar 313-398 What are prophets & apostles? Gifts from Jesus to his church. Representatives and messengers. They speak when God has given them something to say. The church leaders recognize it and the church receives it. Each of the 4 Gifts function when recognized and received. What are prophets & apostles NOT? Free to do what they want, however they want. Not dictators. Not celebrities. Not gurus. What is the purpose of our interactions with the 4 Gifts? Sent to equip the church for ministry. Sent to build up the church. Sent to help the church learn about Jesus and become more like Jesus. Sent to help the church grow stronger spiritually, able to refute wrong thinking. Equipping – making, preparing, training, perfecting, making fully qualified for service, (in classical language the word was used to describe setting a bone during surgery – The Great Physician is now making all the necessary adjustments so the church will not be “out of joint”) What should we do? 1.       Read Ephesians 3:14-21 and 4:1-16. 2.       Pray, asking God for guidance. 3.       Think about what we are reading. 4.       Write down elements of God's purpose for us. 5.       Write down ways in which we should interact with the 4 Gifts. Extra notes: “the spirit of prophecy” – Revelation 19:10 Worship God, because the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” – Revelation 19:10  CSB The word “testimony,” or witness, references someone who has seen or experienced something to be the case. John and his brothers are therefore witnesses and the bearers of testimony to the plan and purpose of God for redemption in Jesus. Consequently, God is the only appropriate object of worship. This is explained by the somewhat enigmatic statement, “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Here the word “prophecy” (proph?teia), which arises from a combination of “speak” (ph?mi) and “before” (pro), an important use of the word essentially meaning “speak for God before.” Before what? is an appropriate question. One sense of the preposition (pro) would be to speak about an event before it happens. Another sense would be to speak before listeners of the purpose and acts of God. Likely in this case both of these senses are paramount. In any event, the meaning is actually reasonably clear: The spirit of both the proclamation and the telling of the future is bound up in the testimony of Jesus. Jesus the Lamb—and not just a chronology of last things—is the theme of the Revelation. As Walvoord succinctly declares, “This means that prophecy at its very heart is designed to unfold the beauty and loveliness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” – Patterson, P. (2012). Revelation (E. R. Clendenen, Ed.; Vol. 39, pp. 345–346). B&H. If the gospel is truly good news, why does it matter so much what we believe? In this episode, we take a closer look at what the gospel actually is—and what it isn't. Many people assume Christianity is about improving behavior, following religious rules, or proving our loyalty through performance. But the gospel message is not about what we do for God—it's about what Christ has already done for us. We explore the difference between salvation and discipleship, what it means to obey the gospel by faith, and why belief is not the same thing as understanding everything. The Bible is honest about the human condition: none of us is naturally fit for God's family, and none of us can solve the problem of sin on our own. That's why God Himself provided the solution through Jesus. We also address a common question: if salvation is by faith alone, can someone walk away from it? Scripture offers both deep assurance and serious warning—reminding us that while salvation is secure in Christ, faith is more than a one-time decision. It is an ongoing trust and allegiance. The gospel is not advice. It's an announcement. And it changes everything.

Thanks for joining us this Sunday as we worship and listen to the Word brought by Pastor Mark.Sacred Community is people deeply connected to God and deeply connected to each otherwith respect, reverence, and responsibility. What the enemy is fighting for is exactly what we must fight against: isolation, disconnection, and loneliness. We show up when there's a crisis. But most of us don't know our neighbors' names. We barely recognize their faces. We are an isolated society. And too often, our churches reflect very littleof what the early church actually lived and experienced.“In this sacred connection we encourage, strengthen, bear burdens, heal, refine, and love.Any human need can be met through another human hand whose heart is held by God.”— Dr. Shelly HoganWe were created for connection. From the womb to the tomb, relationship affects our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.Yet when people struggle, they isolate. They do the opposite of God's design.Isolation feeds mental illness. And many of our battles are spiritual in nature.Biblical figures like Elijah and David faced burnout, anxiety, and despair.Struggle does not disqualify faith. But isolation does weaken us.If you are struggling:Identify what piece of spiritual armor may be missing.Don't let anxious thoughts dictate your actions.Stop claiming struggle as your identity. It is something you face, not who you are.Instead of running from people, run to them.Do the opposite of what your flesh tells you to do.If we are created for connection, disconnection is not an option.Because if everyone isolates, who will we run to?If everyone is anxious, where will peace be found? We are not meant to live as individuals.God ordained us as a peopleto carry the Great Commission together. There are two communities being built:one for earthly kingdomsand one for the Kingdom of God.Love is the driving force.Without it, nothing we do matters. We are better together. We accomplish more together. And isolation may be the very thing keeping the worldfrom hearing the Good News.

The Good News is that God's love for us in Jesus Christ catches us by surprise – because God always loves us and the whole world more. What Jesus does in his testing in the wilderness and at the wedding at Cana should catch us by surprise. It's not the way the world works – but it points us to the way the world ought to be.

Full Text of Readings First Sunday of Lent Lectionary: 22 The Saint of the day is Chair of Saint Peter The Story of the Chair of Saint Peter This feast commemorates Christ's choosing Peter to sit in his place as the servant-authority of the whole Church. After the “lost weekend” of pain, doubt, and self-torment, Peter hears the Good News. Angels at the tomb say to Magdalene, “The Lord has risen! Go, tell his disciples and Peter.” John relates that when he and Peter ran to the tomb, the younger outraced the older, then waited for him. Peter entered, saw the wrappings on the ground, the headpiece rolled up in a place by itself. John saw and believed. But he adds a reminder: “…[T]hey did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead” (John 20:9). They went home. There the slowly exploding, impossible idea became reality. Jesus appeared to them as they waited fearfully behind locked doors. “Peace be with you,” he said (John 20:21b), and they rejoiced. The Pentecost event completed Peter's experience of the risen Christ. “…[T]hey were all filled with the holy Spirit” (Acts 2:4a) and began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamation as the Spirit prompted them. Only then can Peter fulfill the task Jesus had given him: “… [O]nce you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:32). He at once becomes the spokesman for the Twelve about their experience of the Holy Spirit—before the civil authorities who wished to quash their preaching, before the Council of Jerusalem, for the community in the problem of Ananias and Sapphira. He is the first to preach the Good News to the Gentiles. The healing power of Jesus in him is well attested: the raising of Tabitha from the dead, the cure of the crippled beggar. People carry the sick into the streets so that when Peter passed his shadow might fall on them. Even a saint experiences difficulty in Christian living. When Peter stopped eating with Gentile converts because he did not want to wound the sensibilities of Jewish Christians, Paul says, “…I opposed him to his face because he clearly was wrong…. [T]hey were not on the right road in line with the truth of the gospel…” (Galatians 2:11b, 14a). At the end of John's Gospel, Jesus says to Peter, “Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go” (John 21:18). What Jesus said indicated the sort of death by which Peter was to glorify God. On Vatican Hill, in Rome, during the reign of Nero, Peter did glorify his Lord with a martyr's death, probably in the company of many Christians. Second-century Christians built a small memorial over his burial spot. In the fourth century, the Emperor Constantine built a basilica, which was replaced in the 16th century. Reflection Like the committee chair, the chair refers to the occupant, not the furniture. Its first occupant stumbled a bit, denying Jesus three times and hesitating to welcome gentiles into the new Church. But, as we know, he turned toward the light. Some of its later occupants have also stumbled a bit, sometimes even failed scandalously. As individuals, we may sometimes think a particular pope has let us down. Still, the office endures as a sign of the long tradition we cherish and as a focus for the universal Church.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Saturday after Ash WednesdayFebruary 21, 2026 Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Saturday after Ash Wednesday. Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to Luke. Jesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him. Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them. The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”The gospel of the Lord.Homily In our gospel today we hear Jesus call Levi, a tax collector, to follow him. In the gospel according to Matthew, he will be called Matthew. The name is not so important as the fact that he was a tax collector, a class of people who was despised in Jesus' time because they because they were agents of the Roman occupiers. So, we might ask, along with the Pharisees, why would Jesus call such a person? Jesus obviously knew Matthew/Levi's heart better that he did, because that tax collector left his post immediately and followed Jesus. His joy at being chosen by Jesus was so great that he threw a great banquet and invited his friends, tax collectors and other outcasts, of course, to get to know Jesus. The Pharisees were not impressed. They tried to shame Jesus' disciples: “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” They implied that anyone who would associate with tax collectors had to be a sinner. Therefore, the disciples must shun such company. Jesus wasted no time in coming to the defense of his disciples: “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.” To follow Jesus, one must humbly recognize that he or she is in need of God's saving grace and that Jesus is the source of that grace. In our polarized society, where we are expected to show our allegiance to our own group by despising and bad mouthing those of other opinions or cultures, the call of Matthew/Levi should serve as a wake-up call. Jesus invites the outcasts to follow him and restores their value as children of God. We, each one of us, has been called by Christ, not because of any merit we may think we have, but because of the inner value he sees in us, and wants to bring forth. The prophet Isaiah in today's first reading shows us the way. “If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” The Pharisees erred not by calling those who associated with the tax collectors sinners, but by thinking that they themselves were not. Jesus corrects them, not by denying that those with whom he was associating were sinners, but by saying that those were the very ones he had come to find and to save. As we enter the season of Lent let us recognize our need for forgiveness for the many times we have not acted as children of God and thank Jesus for calling us into his light. Then we must invite others to share in this moment of grace, as did Matthew/Levi.May God bless you. Fr. Karl E. Esker CSsRBasilica of our Lady of Perpetual HelpBrooklyn, NY

Read OnlineJesus saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him. Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them. Luke 5:27–29Levi's life changed in an instant. He encountered the Messiah, the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and in response to Jesus' simple yet profound invitation—“Follow me”—Levi left everything behind and followed Him. This radical decision offers an inspiring witness as we begin our Lenten journeys.Christ's call is often twofold. Even those baptized as infants must eventually hear and respond to that call for themselves. There comes a moment after the age of reason when those raised in the faith must choose whether to embrace the call to follow Jesus. For those who did not encounter Christ in their youth or who might have strayed from Him, the call is ever-present, continuously offered by God. Like Levi, once that invitation is heard and internalized, it demands a response—a radical choice to follow Him. And with that choice, life is never the same. When Levi accepted Jesus' invitation, his life underwent a complete transformation. He “left everything behind.” While his career as a tax collector was financially lucrative, it likely left him spiritually empty. Tax collectors were viewed with disdain by their fellow Jews because they worked for the Roman oppressors and often took more than what was owed for their own profit. This position, though offering wealth, created a life of moral compromise, guilt, and isolation. It was into this interior emptiness that Jesus entered. Levi, touched by an intuitive grace, recognized that abandoning everything and following Christ was the answer to his deepest longings.Have you heard Christ's call in your own life? Have you abandoned everything that stands in the way of fully following Him? This question is especially significant for those who were raised in the faith. While being baptized as a child and growing up in the Church is a great gift, it does not automatically mean that we have internalized the faith or personally responded to Jesus' invitation. Have you truly heard Jesus call you? Have you left behind everything that hinders your complete “Yes” to Him?Levi's transformation didn't stop with his “Yes.” He wanted to share his newfound joy and faith with others. Levi hosted a “great banquet” for Jesus in his home, inviting a large group of tax collectors and others to meet the One who had changed his life. His encounter with Christ was so profound and life-giving that he couldn't keep it to himself—he wanted others, especially those whom he knew were also spiritually empty, to encounter the same transformative love.If you have responded to Jesus' call and given your life to Him, your heart will naturally burn with a desire to share that joy with others. As you look at your family, friends, and acquaintances, do you see the same restlessness or emptiness that once filled your heart? How might God be calling you to invite them to encounter Christ? Perhaps, like Levi, you are called to “host a banquet” in your own way, sharing the Good News with those who need it the most.Reflect today on Levi's conversion and see your own life in his story. Recognize the restlessness within your heart and listen for Jesus' call. Identify Him as the answer to your deepest desires. Say “Yes” to His invitation, abandoning everything that competes with His will, and share the treasure of your faith with others. Embracing this twofold path is one of the best ways to ensure a truly fruitful Lent. My inviting Lord, You call to me each day, yet I often fail to listen. Help me to hear Your voice more clearly this Lent and to respond with all my heart. I choose to leave behind all that stands in the way of following You, and I pray that You will use me to invite others to Your heavenly banquet.
