Fasting for me was always steeped in religion. I was raised Catholic and during my teenage years, I would fast trying to prove my loyalty to God. As I went through medicine, I discovered that intermittent fasting can actually be helpful. In fact, we're seeing more research on it than ever before and it's more prevalent in the media. We've had pretty good success in the Menopause Movement with women who tried it as some of them dropped around 30-35 pounds. Are you eating too little to lose weight? How would you know? Eating consistently less than your body wants will slow your metabolism. You will lose your metabolic flexibility. Menopausal athletes or exercise enthusiasts, even more so.  But it's normal to have a response like that. Endurance runners have long had eating disorders, or dysfunctional feelings around eating. The desire to be lighter, thinner to be faster is strong.  If you have low energy availability, you'll risk: Thyroid function disruption Endocrine disruption Muscle loss Workout performance (therefor results) suffers Negative Mitochondria and muscle and muscle protein synthesis effects Low Energy Availability causes: Too low overall calories Too low protein Too low carbohydrates Too low fat Any combination of these Culprits: Dieting intentionally Fasting without conscious refueling and intentional goals  Keto continuously  lifestyle dietary choices (inadequate EAA in plant-sources) Protein needs To Maintain: Ideal body weight in lbs = grams of protein Your Maintain weight daily Protein need: To Lose weight: X 10-15% more Your weight loss daily protein need: (see handout link below for a worksheet to do calculations) **Regardless of overall need, it needs to be consumed at a specific dose. 30 grams of protein minimum – no more than 50-60 grams for best ability to synthesis. Carbohydrate needs Light activity days/Recovery/short interval days 1.4 gm carb/pounds bodyweight Your calculation: 1.4 x ___________ = ______________ 60-120 minutes of endurance exercise 1.8grams x body weight pounds Your calculation: 1.8 x _______________ = ______________ More endurance training – increased the carbohydrate need 2-2.7gm per pounds (this is also where you're no longer going to find you make weight loss possible, but you're working toward performance and preventing muscle wasting that will happen. Fat Servings per meal is an easier way to adjust and consider 5 servings a day, is 1-2 at each meal. Most foods with protein contain fat or meal prep or condiments contain fat. Low fat and higher carbs (high activity days) Higher fat and low carb (lower activity days) When both fat and carbs are high, we have issues. Even with “healthy resistant starches” this is true. Examples: I do a 20-minute HI interval training session and that's my exercise– that's a light day for carb But still higher than most women are trying to go (100 grams is as low as I would recommend for an active woman and never would I go that low for an athlete) Based on 130 lbs 1.4 x body weight = 182 grams of carbs The same 20-minute HIIT interval session before a strength training session (40-minute session). Now, that boosts my need for carbohydrates, not just protein. So, I am back to at least 1.8g/body weight in pounds of carbs on these days. 1.8 x body weight = 234 Timing of recovery meals is important too. You want to eat by bookending your workouts with adequate fuel. Pre workout and post workout both matter. During recovery if you are HIGHLY active woman: The ratio of protein: carbs post workout is ideally 1: 3 or 4 if you're endurance training and need recovery quickly for that next workout. If you're not that active and simply exercising at minimum, you are a little less concerned about that. If you're exercising intentionally 5-6 days a week for an hour (or more) you are “an athlete.” So, for more active women with a threshold of 30 grams of protein at each meal you want 90 to 120 grams of carbs in that meal as well. What does that look like? Carb counts of some high quality carb choices: 1 cup cooked oatmeal 27 grams 1 cup of frozen berries? 21 grams Medium apple 25 grams 1 medium sweet potato 27 grams Banana 27 grams 1 cup Chili 23.5 carbs 1 cup butternut squash soup 23 1 slice of pumpkin pie 46 grams If you don't repair & replenish your protein & carb stores during the window (0-2 hours with sweet spot at 60-90 minutes) you'll be more tired the next day, find next workouts harder – though less effective, dead legs, etc). Sample meals during one day and carb count: Smoothie with half a banana and 1 cup of blueberries         34.5 1.5 cups of chili and an apple                                                 60.25 Sweet potato and berries  for dinner                                     38.0                                                                                                 132.75 Falls short of even the lowest need for carbohydrates (182gm) for a 130 lb woman. If you're increasing training levels, eating during activity will help. (Long bike rides, long hikes) That isn't accounted for in the example. What's your Energy Availability? One cannot take on a fast of a few hours and call it a fast - it doesn't count in that regard. And separating from a community fast is not acceptable either - so joining in a small part of that fast in solidarity is, however, acceptable. With supports and arguments against this position regarding partial fasts. Including a rule of thumb making sure that one takes a fast upon oneself from the day before. When exactly? It's a machloket, though pegged to the afternoon. Plus, an important turning to Megilat Taanit, as the official calendar of holidays. Also, the case of high quality meat enticing someone who is fasting, and when whether one can break the fast and make it up another time, based on how badly you want to eat it. Plus, a "fast because of a dream," to provide an antidote, as it were, for a bad dream (even on Shabbat). Plus, a new mishnah: more serious fasting for rain by the community. Which includes limiting activity as well. Where fasting isn't fasting, as we like to say.

SHR # 2792:: Can Fasting Modulate Infectious Disease? - Franziska Graef, PhD Candidate - Fasting before and during exposure to Salmonella enterica bacteria protects mice from developing a full-blown infection, in part due to changes in the animals' gut microbiomes, according to new research published in PLOS Pathogens by Bruce Vallance and colleagues at University of British Columbia, Canada. When people or animals develop an infection, they often lose their appetite. However it remains controversial whether fasting protects a host from infection, or increases their susceptibility. In the new study, mice were fasted for 48 hours before and during oral infection with the bacteria Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, a common cause of foodborne illness in people. NOTE: The show ended abruptly due to a complete power outage in our building that knocked the internet out as well. We covered all the important points of the study. Franziska will be back on because she has some fascinating perspectives on fasting.

In today's episode, we discuss the second part of Alpha Reverence in which we talk about the secular versions of spirituality from the book "The Power of Ritual" by Casper ter Kuile. He recommends taking some of the things from religious teachings and using them in your life. We can be spiritual even without religion. Sometimes our most meaningful rituals are ones that we create. Spirituality is a connection to yourself, to a higher power, and to others. Sacred and transcendental experiences don't ONLY exist in churches or synagogues, temples, or mosques. Anyone can access those experiences, we just have to learn how, with our intentions, to invite that to happen. It can be achieved through: Sabbath - a day of rest and reflection. Community - synchronized singing or movements (example: CrossFit); and joining a group with a common cause Sacred Texts - you can find wisdom through texts such as reading a book or joining a book club or some community. Meal Time - communal, start with a prayer, or a toast. Prepare it with intention. Sacred intentional thoughts about how amazing it is to eat this food. Rituals where people are asked to share something or end with a board game. Fasting - but not just for health benefits, save calories or get into ketosis. But do it for mental clarity and donate your saved $$ to a shelter. Pilgrimage - a contemplative journey to a sacred place. Going to the ocean to scatter ashes. A pilgrimage has a purpose. To heal? To find forgiveness? To just experience something new or awesome. Seasons - honor the beginning of spring, summer, fall, or winter. Connect with nature with a hike, picnic with friends, donate leftover food to a shelter. Confession groups - such as AA, 12 step type addiction, recovery groups, and other spiritual programs. Sacrifices - giving up something for other people or charity. Other questions answered in this episode: What is humility? And how do we do it? What is the value of forgiveness? And in case you've never been told, there are times when resistance is a good thing. And here's why: the world is full of things that get in the way of our view of God. In order to receive from God, we need to be willing to resist our false ideas of God. God is not after creating convenience for us, and we need to resist the thought that God is not moved by our need. We are not the owners of God's resources, as much as we think it depends on us, and we have to resist when we think God has cheated us. But if we let the world speak more into our schedules, our beliefs, our character even… resisting these thoughts will become harder and harder. This week, we have two more challenges for growing resistance: turning our phones off for one hour a week, and fasting from something for an entire day a week. Let's decrease distraction. People who are just more just metabolically healthier are going to have healthier stem cells. The sicker you are, the sicker your stem cells are.  Stem cells send out signals. As you age, your stem cells won't be able to send out as many signals.  Chronic inflammation will also exhaust stem cells. Three major factors contribute to chronic inflammation: Stress Lack of exercise Smoking   [03:45] What Is Happening To Our Skin As We Age Damage from the sun is going to cause spots on the skin. Some spots are also hormonal things like melasma, which you can get from hormonal changes.  The number one thing you could do for your skin is actually to protect it from the sun. Getting burnt is not good for your skin.  Regular sun exposure will cause DNA damage to the skin. Plus, it can contribute to faster aging.  Dr. Killen says to put sunscreen on your face.    [07:50] Getting A Healthy Balance of Autophagy and mTOR Through Fasting Even with a few hours of fasting, you can start to see increased stem cell production.  With longer fasts, you will have more effects systemically on stem cells.  With fasting, we see an increase in autophagy and cellular cleanup.  The best part of fasting is that it's free!   [12:15] Exercise For Anti-Aging: How Often and How Intense Should Your Workouts Be?  You need at least three or four days of heavy lifting.  Weights are really important for creating hormones like testosterone and growth hormones.  Heavy lifting exercises should be at least thirty minutes to an hour.  Plus, you should do thirty minutes of aerobic activity a day.   [13:20] Antiseptic Mouthwash Is Bad For You: Dr. Killen Explains The Problem Antiseptic mouthwash kills the bacteria in the mouth.  When there are no bacteria in your mouth, it prevents you from making nitric oxide from food.  Nitric oxide is essential for sexual health and erections. If you're using antiseptic mouthwash and you're taking an antacid, it can decrease your sexual function.    [19:00] The Role That High Glucose Levels Can Play on Your Sexual Function  Glucose will create inflammation. You want to have good blood flow to your sexual organs. If you have chronic inflammation, then you will have a lack of blood flow going to your genitalia.  Hormones like testosterone will also be affected by high sugar levels.    [23:35] Peptides: Enhancing The Body's Ability To Protect and Repair Itself Peptide is just a fancy name for a short protein.
