Episode Zero is a discussion on the ways people engage with their faith. Alman and Nihal talk about how people hold biases vs. beliefs, how to navigate differences in communities, becoming conflict-comfortable in the face of disagreement, and what they are planning to discuss in the upcoming episodes. We also get a chance to hear about the unique backgrounds of the co-hosts. Alman is a singer-songwriter who was mentored by Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) and has performed throughout the world, all the while having a background in business and arts. Nihal is a community activist, educator, and scholar who has degrees in Islam and Psychology. Faith in Fine Print is brought to you by The Mantle, a sacred safe space dedicated to facilitating and demonstrating Islamic Spirituality. We covered a lot of ground in 2019. The government shutdown. The seemingly endless toll debate. The Stop and Shop strike, opioid epidemic, the hottest month in Connecticut history, PFAS chemical spills ... on and on. Along the way, we set up microphones in bars, restaurants, breweries and markets, places like Tangiers International Market, Story and Soil Coffee, Spectra Wired, the Bushnell Park Beer Garden, Know Good Market, Hanging Hill Brewing Company and the short-lived Royal nightclub, and interviewed as many people as we could find. For the final podcast of the year, we put together clips featuring some of the folks we interviewed. Thanks for listening to Capitol Watch.
Hey, how's it going? Why are people leaving Connecticut, and how will you get them to stay? Can you fix the roads? What about homelessness? Can I hold the door for you? We asked, you answered: if you got into an elevator with Gov. Ned Lamont, what would you say? Capitol Watch heads to Story and Soil Coffee in Hartford for some crowd-sourced elevator pitches. And strong coffee.
Hartford Hustle: Conversation With and About the People Making Hartford Happen. Each one a new iteration. Iteration 0.9.1 - Mike Acosta, Story & Soil Coffee
Alex Province makes smashed cheeseburgers at home for a crowd with a clever hack, and Faith and the gang taste three phenomenal wines (all available in our region!) from the portfolio of Rosenthal Wine Merchants. Plus, neuroscientist Rachel Herz shares findings from her fascinating book, Why You Eat What You Eat. We’re also sharing our thoughts on “massaged kale” and revealing the brand of Basmati rice Cooks Illustrated magazine declares best. This week’s shout-outs: Story and Soil Coffee and Capital Ice Cream. If you haven’t been to the Frog Hollow neighborhood in Hartford to check them out yet, fix that. Support the show.
The 2018 Best of Hartford Magazine winners seemed a bit off when I perused the list this year. The deeper I got, the dumber it sounded, (like McDonald's winning best french fries) and I had a couple friends that contacted me and felt the same. On this episode of the podcast I partner up with 3 awesome and influential personalities that pretty much dominate the field in their prospective markets. Sarah McCoy from Story and Soil Coffee, Ben Dubow of Bistro on Main and Heather Riedl of the Mercado food truck and el Pollo Guapo restaurant. Together we dismantled the list, gave kudos to those that deserved, shouted out the forgotten, and had a hearty laugh at the insanely undeserving. Intro/Outro music is a track by Career Crooks titled "Good Luck With That."
