Nihal Arthanayake: From Radio 1 to Corporate Storytelling - Class, Diversity & the BBC's Blind Spots Nihal Arthanayake, former BBC Radio 1 presenter, joins Jimmy's Jobs of the Future to trace his career, from promoting rap nights at 16 and fronting Collapsed Lung to being dropped by a major label and pivoting into music journalism and PR before becoming a Radio 1 DJ in 2002. Nihal explains how radio shifted from gatekeeping to curating as social media and algorithms changed music discovery, and recounts his 23 years across Radio 1, Asian Network and 5 Live, including planning his exit and ultimately being engineered out after speaking out. He argues the BBC's biggest bias is class, says it “lies about diversity,” keeps people of color in boxes, and fears the Daily Mail more than ideological labels suggest. We also discuss interview craft, his book on conversation, and how doing stand-up comedy increased his confidence. 00:00 Intro 01:22 Welcome and Early Dreams 02:51 First Money in Music 05:33 Collapsed Lung Breakthrough 09:22 Go Discs and Muddy Funksters 12:34 Dropped and Reinventing as Journalist 13:46 Why British Rap Lagged 15:36 Gatekeepers to Algorithms 18:14 Landing Radio 1 Asian Beats 22:29 Representation and BBC Culture 31:24 Calling Out Window Dressing 40:05 Is the BBC Left Wing 46:32 Politics and Interview Nerves 49:33 Nerve Wracking Guests 51:08 Peterson Clegg Clash 52:53 Interview Style Lessons 55:06 Talking Ends Conflict 57:36 Mutual Friend Story 01:00:00 Research Like A Pro 01:05:19 No Gotcha Headlines 01:09:12 Media Tech Farage 01:14:55 Politics Brutal Switch 01:26:14 Kids Time Football 01:30:55 Stand Up Confidence Credits: Host/Exec Producer: Jimmy McLoughlin OBE Producer: Sunny Winter Producer: Thuy ********** Follow us on socials! Fronts + Fault Lines, is a new podcast on Palestine Deep Dive developed by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), an organisation of Palestinian and Arab youth in diaspora struggling for the liberation of our land and people.Hosted by, Jeanine and Nihal, organisers with PYM in Britain - this new podcast series in collaboration with the Palestinian Youth Movement, offering sharp analysis on the Arab and Iranian region and what it means for us in Britain. In this episode they are joined by Hossam El-Hamalawy, journalist, scholar, and one of the organisers of the 2011 Egyptian uprising, whose new book Counterrevolution in Egypt: Sisi's New Republic, published by Verso this year, is a comprehensive account of how Egypt's military, police and intelligence services forged an unprecedented alliance against the Egyptian people's revolutionary aspirations, and built the system that governs Egypt today. They discuss what Egypt lost in 1967 and what was foreclosed at Camp David; how the 2011 revolution and the 2013 coup connect to that longer history; how Egypt's accommodation with Israel set the parameters for the entire region's relationship to Palestinian liberation; and where there are still possibilities for positive change.Music by: oxhyoxhy.xyzSupport us by becoming a paid subscriber from as little as £1 a month. In this episode, Nihal El Aasar returns to this podcast to discuss the competing progressive alternatives in the Arab world prior to the establishment of the State of Israel. Arab attempts to join capitalist systems were obstructed by British and Zionist colonial power, leading to the maintenance of a hegemonic state. We also reference the Union of Arab States and the role of the Zionist entity in hindering regional development. Gamal Abdel Nasser and other leaders in Egypt attempted to create a sovereign economic and political space through nationalist projects. This was actively resisted by Western powers and seen as a threat to imperialist interests. The theory of dependency, as developed by Samir Amin, highlights how underdevelopment in the global South is the result of the expansion of global capital. Nihal argues that while Nasser's project was popular and supported by the masses, his distrust in popular participation and repressive actions against intellectuals helped prevent the project from fully being actualized. The formation of Israel was intertwined with Western efforts to manage the political future of the so-called Middle Eastern region. Israel has hindered the Arab modernization project and has negatively affected the surrounding countries. We discuss how Israel exists in the region to halt the potential of the Arab people as a whole. This is done through repression, impoverishment, and preventing economic prosperity. The U.S. interests in extraction and controlling resources in the region also play a role in this. Apart from that, we meditate on Egypt's early 20th century role as a leader in the Arab world and the expectations placed on its military and economy for stability and development being largely shaped by its history of conflict with Israel and the continued presence of Zionism in the region. The military's control of the economy, rise of religious fundamentalism, and prevalence of conspiracy theories can all be traced back to this relationship. Additionally, Egypt's 20th century development was and continued to be hindered by both structural pressures from outside and its own struggle with overextension as a newly decolonized nation. The working class in Egypt consisted mainly of peasants who were oppressed under the Egyptian monarchy. Land reforms were necessary for progress and industrialization was slowly taking place. From the start, Egyptian nationalism was formed in opposition to Zionism. Nasser faced challenges from the US and its allies and had to build up the Egyptian military in response. We discuss how the nationalization of the Suez Canal and the creation of the United Arab Republic were unprecedented events, but internal struggles and external interference ultimately led to its downfall. The Gulf monarchies have also been deeply intertwined with imperial and capitalist interests since their founding, making them a natural opposition to Arab socialist and progressive projects. The 1973 oil embargo, El Aasar argues, was the last major act of Arab unity but was not an altruistic act of solidarity. The embargo affirmed the importance of the petrodollar for the US and was influential in bringing about the Camp David Accords, which aimed to consolidate the petrodollar and move Egypt fully from the Soviet camp to that of the United States. We meditate on the significance of Camp David and the 1978 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, arguing that it represents a betrayal of Egyptian sovereignty and a move towards neoliberalism and repression. She also highlights how this has instilled a defeatist mindset in Egyptians and led to ongoing struggles with poverty and domestic warfare. She argues that the current regime in Egypt is a continuation of the "Camp David Republic" and that the promised benefits of peace, such as prosperity and political openness, have been left unfulfilled. This week we welcome Nihal Mirashi, Sr. Product Marketing Manager for Database solutions at Everpure, to unpack the key findings of the new 2026 State of Database Infrastructure report, which surveyed over 500 infrastructure and data professionals globally. Our discussion starts with a look at Nihal's professional journey, including his transition from focusing on the SaaS vertical to building out the go-to-market strategy for open-source databases, and his current work in helping customers with their database environments and exploring AI tools. Our conversation frames the context for modernization initiatives, noting that while organizations understand they must modernize (with platforms like Oracle26.ai), they are often slowed by outdated approaches. A central theme of the report is that modernization is failing because the traditional, event-based model is broken, creating a disruption paradox. The report data shows that 85% of professionals are concerned about modernization initiatives because they associate them with disruption, and 70% find even planned downtime unacceptable. Success is no longer defined solely by performance—which is now considered table stakes with the move to all-flash solutions—but by operational assurance and efficiency. This focus on operations is critical given the complexities of hybrid environments: 93% of organizations operate one, and 73% find them harder to manage today than three years ago due to data silos and multiple workflows. Operational friction translates directly into significant hidden costs and missed innovation opportunities. A staggering 80% of Database Administrators (DBAs) spend more time on re-validation than on innovation, with 55% of their time consumed by maintenance, preventing them from becoming data strategists. Furthermore, 60% of respondents are not confident in predicting their three-year infrastructure costs, and 71% have received budget surprises from vendors. Our episode concludes by drawing an analogy between database modernization and the ability of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees to adapt their sound, emphasizing that continuous evolution and learning from peers—not disruptive, rip-and-replace events—is the way forward. In this episode, Nihal, Brendon and Peyton discuss how industrial marketers can and should respond during times of significant economic and geopolitical upheaval. They explore the timing, relevance, tone and channels for effective communication about sensitive topics like tariffs, war and market disruptions.
Recorded live at SocialPacific 2025 in North Vancouver, Nihal Mandanna, Director of Growth at Cyber Impact, joins guest host Rachel Thexton to explore what it really means to build trust through email marketing.Cyber Impact is a Canadian email marketing platform built around data sovereignty, security, and compliance — storing all client data on Canadian soil and helping organizations stay compliant, deliverable, and genuinely connected to their audiences.Nihal unpacks why the best email strategies focus on relationship-building over reach, how hyper-personalization is reshaping lifecycle marketing across industries, and why choosing a Canadian platform is about more than convenience — it's about who holds the keys to your data.Because whether you're a scrappy startup or a government agency, email is still one of the last permission-based channels where trust is earned, not assumed.Produced by TAKT.

Today, we wanted to run a bit of a thought experiment on organic social. As an agency, we've often recommended that clients turn email or well performing paid social content into organic social posts for added engagement. But what if we've got it backwards? What if organic social is the lab for testing new marketing approaches? Peyton joins Brendon and Nihal to discuss.

In Part 2 of our series of conversations about positioning, Brendon and Nihal talk about how we handle positioning deliverables and what exactly the final product should look like. And, we talk a lot more about B2B marketing guru April Dunford.
70 years ago this year, a researcher at University College of the West Indies in Jamaica published a paper in The Lancet describing a case series of patients with diabetes who did not have the typical hallmarks of type 1 or type 2 disease. They were young, underweight, resistant to insulin, and did not tend to have ketoacidosis. The condition was coined J-type diabetes, after Jamaica, and it was briefly recognised by WHO as malnutrition-related diabetes. However, WHO removed it from its official classification in 1999, because of insufficient evidence of its association with malnutrition. In this episode of In Conversation With, Professor Meredith Hawkins and Professor Nihal Thomas explain how this “lost” condition, which they estimate affects 25 million people worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, is now becoming more widely recognised and better understood, albeit with a long way to go in terms of additional research. They also propose a new name: type 5 diabetes. Listen now to explore the fascinating history of the disorder and the urgent need for effective treatments.Read the full Viewpoint:https://www.thelancet.com/journals/langlo/article/PIIS2214-109X(25)00263-3/fulltext?dgcid=buzzsprout_icw_podcast_September_25_langloContinue this conversation on social!Follow us today at...https://thelancet.bsky.social/https://instagram.com/thelancetgrouphttps://facebook.com/thelancetmedicaljournalhttps://linkedIn.com/company/the-lancethttps://youtube.com/thelancettv

How can marketers and engineers work better together? Let's talk about it.
In this conversation, Nanak Nihal Khalsa discusses his journey into the crypto space, focusing on decentralized identity, the concept of human keys, and the importance of entropy in cryptography. He explains how the Human Network aims to provide secure and private identity solutions while addressing compliance challenges. In this episode, we tackle the challenge so many of us are facing right now: how do you choose the right AI tools without getting overwhelmed by the endless options? With over 32,000+ tools out there (yes, really), it's easy to fall into analysis paralysis or end up subscribing to a dozen platforms you barely use. Nihal and I share our favorite go-to tools, what we're using in our own businesses, and how to evaluate which platforms are truly worth your time and money. We also explore the difference between individual LLMs (like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini) versus aggregator platforms (like Abacus and Poe), and how each one fits into a short-term rental operator's toolkit. We even take a side trip into dog diet planning using Claude (yes, AI really can do that), and why being intentional is the most important skill you can develop when integrating AI into your business. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Revolutionize Your Employee Onboarding with THRIVE Essentials: Faster Training, Stronger Teams, Better Results! [editor's note: Due to the context of rapidly developing events in the region, it is important to note that this conversation was recorded back in early October, 2024] In this episode, we speak with Nihal El Aasar about her recently penned essay, "Left Wing Melancholia, the Arab Political Subject." We speak about Palestine's importance to the Arab political subject and the need to analyze the current absence of the Arab masses in light of Israel's genocidal onslaught. She highlights the influence of Palestinian intellectual Ghassan Kanafani on her work, particularly his broader definition of the Palestinian question and the importance of not isolating it from the wider struggle against capitalism and imperialism in the so-called Middle East and beyond. Nihal critiques the narrow framing of the Palestinian struggle vis-a-vis Israel and stresses the need to consider the wider Arab and regional dimensions of the struggle. We also explore the role of reactionary Arab regimes play in weakening the National Liberation Movement and preying on the masses' instincts toward national and class liberation. Nihal provides historical context, discussing the impact of the 1967 defeat on Arab socialism and pan-Arabism, and the subsequent rise of neoliberal policies that have continued to govern certain segments of the region. Through a materialist lens, she critiques the current political paralysis that can be observed throughout the Arab world, attributing it to severe repression and systemic depoliticization. We cross-reference this paralysis and juxtapose the phenomenon across similar instances happening across the world—including for Black folks in the US. She emphasizes the need to grapple with defeat as a material reality and learn from past struggles to reactivate the colonized masses and reengage in political struggle. Nihal is an Egyptian writer, researcher and radio host. She mainly writes about politics, political economy and culture. Her work has appeared in various Arabic and English language publications. For another related conversation on Nasser, the context of Arab regimes today, and some of the same dynamics that Nihal outlines in this conversation, we recently hosted Ameed Faleh discussing among other things Anouar Abdel-Malek's Egypt: Military Society.
