19 Şubat 2020 tarihinde aşırı sağcı bir Alman saldırgan kentteki iki noktada, toplam dokuz göçmen kökenliyi öldürüp, intihar etti. Sedat Gürbüz, Kaloyan Velkow, Fatih Saraçoğlu, Vili Viorel Paun, Ferhat Unvar, Mercedes Kierpacz, Gökhan Gültekin, Hamza Kurtoviç ve Said Nesar Hashemi ırkçı bir saldırgan tarafından hayattan koparıldı. Hanau katliamı 90'lı yıllarda yaşanan Solingen ve Mölln saldırıları ve 2000'li yıllardaki NSU cinayet serisinden sonra Almanya'da göçmenlere yönelik en ölümcül saldırı olarak kayıtlara geçti.
